Question PS3 Network Hard Drive Play DVD

Hi
I have just bought a 2TB Network Hard Drive, I intend to digitize all my DVD's on it.
Long story short, how and can I play those (H.264 Encoded) movie files on my PS3.
Thanks.
Joseph.

As long as the Network hard drive runs a DLNA streaming server application it will appear as a Media server in the PS3 XMB in order for you to strema the files to the Ps3.

Joseph, how long does it take your PC/Mac to convert a DVD ? My PC isn't by any means low end but it took ages to do a single disc.

Hi
Yup... I so annoyed!! Ive used everything from FairUse, Handbrake, WINAVI & DVD Fab and encoding time is a joke.
It takes longer than the dvd play time to encode it with shockingly bad results.

Its actually now easier (and faster) for me to download the movies via torrent.

Am I missing a trick here or is it just too difficult (and impractical) to convert my circa 200 dvd collection to a avi file?

If file sizes aren't too important just use DVDShrink (with rip to single file option set) and rip to a .Vob

Takes about 15mins

DVDShrink hasn't been updated for years so struggles with copy protection on a lot of new movies.

A Decrypting application (slysoft AnyDVD for example) can sit in the background and disable the protection allowing DVDShrink to rip the DVD. Used with the "Do not split into 1Gb chunks" option enabled DVDShrink will then output a single .Vob along with a couple of .Txt files.

Just delete the .txt files and the .Vob you are left with will playback fine on the PS3. Expect an output file in the region of 4Gb though as DVDShrink does no compression (the Shrink bit just allows you to remove unwanted audio/video streams

Re: PS3 Network Hard Drive Play DVD

I was using Handbrake to make fairly nice MP4 files but it would literally take 10hours. Not feasible for me. TBH playback via my PS3 isn't a big deal, I use a Popcorn Hour for network playback in my bedroom (that badboy plays pretty much anything) and in the living room my HTPC deals with all file types too.

A few friends have got beastly Mac Pros which spit out transcoded MP4s in minutes

Re: PS3 Network Hard Drive Play DVD

Hi Folks
Right ok... well I have been doing a few films and they are on my Network Drive...
Now just a few kinks that can be ironed out and wondering if anyone can help?

1. Ideally, I would like to be able to have the DVD Menu be the thing to play a DVD with, anyway to do this on the PS3 using DVDShrink.

2. Secondly I need to be able to use subtitles on my movies on PC & PS3.

Hope you wise guys can help...
When its all good I'll write up a shiny Guide at the end of this so people can read it ^^
Ta muchly.
