PS3 to PC DIRECT with either crossover or normal?

Variations of this question have been asked, but I can’t seem to find a definitive answer.

I would like to connect my PC to my PS3 without going through a router or switch. I do not care about an internet connection for the PS3, all I want to do is take advantage of the gigabyte port on my PC and PS3 without passing through my 100mbps router. So ideally I want to bypass this completely.

Could someone please let me know what network configuration I will need to do for this method to allow me to stream content to PS3 in the fastest possible way? I do not want to share internet connection, just transfer data to PS3 the fastest and cheapest way.

I already have cat5 cable which I could change to crossover, just not sure which works best as in the forums some people say that crossover will not work, were as some people say it will.

Any help would be much appreciated!! I am currently running vista.

Re: PS3 to PC DIRECT with either crossover or normal?

Hi,

I may be wrong, but I thought gigabyte motherboard ports are auto switching?

In which case either would work.

One won't work better than another, it will either work or not.

Best Regards

Chris

Thank you for the reply,

So in theory I should just need to connect them together with a standard cable, but what do I need to do netwrok config wise?

I think you may find that the auto switching refers to the speed. To connect the PS3 to a PC you will either need a hub, a crossover cable or use the wifi.

Re: PS3 to PC DIRECT with either crossover or normal?

I have tried with a standard cable, get the foolowing problems,

I need to configure the network settings of the PS3, I set the IP on PS3 to similar IP as PC.
PS3 settings
IP: 192.168.1.50
Sub net: 255.255.255.0
default router: 192.168.1.1
dns: 208.62.222.222 (got this on a website)

UPNP enabled

this fails to get recognised by PC. PC settings:
IP 192.168.1.49
Sub net 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.1.1

not sure where I have gone wrong here, I have connected to PS3 in the past via my router so I think firewall should be ok as I have not changed these settings.

Hi,

I thought all gigabyte NIC's support Auto-MDX?

Unless this is just on the routers and not the LAN ports on motherboards

The settings look ok to me, but I personally use a router with DHCP.

Best Regards

to confirm yes as long as the PC does indeed have a Gigabit NIC then you don't need a crossover cable, Standard Cat5e/Cat6 will be fine.

Looks like the gateway is the problem. Both are still pointing to the router as default gateway.

On both the PC and the PS3 Set the Gateway and DNS server to the PC's IP Address (192.168.1.49)

also go into Network settings on PS3 and set manually to 1000/full. then do the same in Device manager>NIC>Properties>Advanced settings>speed&duplex on the PC.
