If you are able to wire it then I would say to do so, obviously it's not practical in all situations to but if you can then do

It depends... if the laptop is connected wirelessly then you will get a slower wireless PS3 connection but that connection is probably still faster than your broadband speed and it shouldn't affect the lag. Also if the other half is doing something network intensive (like downloading or watching iPlayer) then this may well affect your speed and your latency - though this particular case will also affect it if you were wired.
What would be of more concern for me is that the wireless connection can and will be affected by cordless phones, microwaves, other wireless networks, baby monitors (you may not have any but the neighbours might!).

Yes, do it console to router. If you went console to modem then you would have to swap the router back in everytime you wanted to use the internet on another device.
