Wired or Wireless For Gaming?

What do you chaps suggest?

Currently, have my PS3 connected wirelessly. Although I am really considering switching to a wired connection if it will improve my gaming experience, or simply to ensure I have the best possible connection. Up until PES 2010, I was extremely happy with a wireless connection. I've never had problems online with games such as Call Of Duty.

However, on PES 2010 I have suffered some annoying lag in some games and it's been doing my head in, hence me considering the switch to see if it makes any difference. I suppose I should also add that my signal strength when connecting wirelessly always says 100%.

As a result, I have a few questions.

When using a wired connection, does it matter how far from the router the console is?

When using a wireless connection, does it matter how far from the router/modem the console is?

When using a wireless connection, is the connection affected by other devices connecting to the network? Eg. If I was online on a console, would myself or the missus being on a laptop at the same time affect the connection? This never seemed to be the case when playing games like COD, I was just asking to be sure.

When using a wired connection, is the connection affected by other devices which are also online?

Is it possible to run a wired connection from a router to the console? Or is it better to run it direct from the modem?

Cheers.

If you are able to wire it then I would say to do so, obviously it's not practical in all situations to but if you can then do

Not unless you're going to be more than 100m away

Yes, the number of walls in the way will also affect it.

It depends... if the laptop is connected wirelessly then you will get a slower wireless PS3 connection but that connection is probably still faster than your broadband speed and it shouldn't affect the lag. Also if the other half is doing something network intensive (like downloading or watching iPlayer) then this may well affect your speed and your latency - though this particular case will also affect it if you were wired.

What would be of more concern for me is that the wireless connection can and will be affected by cordless phones, microwaves, other wireless networks, baby monitors (you may not have any but the neighbours might!).

Nope.

Yes, do it console to router. If you went console to modem then you would have to swap the router back in everytime you wanted to use the internet on another device.
