PS3 ethernet connection suddenly stopped working

Hi all getting the 'an ethernet cable is not connected' message..doh! Nothing has been touched or changed it has just kindly decided to stop working all by itself. Tried rebooting router, swapping connections, swapping cable, rerunning all the set up options.. NADA.

I can connect wirelessly thank God but I'd rather not.. anyone have any clues or knowledge as to how to fix this?

Googling shows that it seems to be relatively rare but with no hard and fast solution. This is my replacement machine from Sony from my original one which got the yellow light of death and is well out of warranty now. Not having much luck

Any help appreciated
