| Re: EyePet - Play & Help Thread
posted this elsewhere, but maybe I can get some help on here?
damn, this is my new love/hate game.
Love the tech, the solidness of the monkey-kitten-thing etc. But the playstation eye is rubbish for real homes, and the interface is really bad too.
Its aimed to appeal to children, but they don't understand you have to point the stupid card towards the camera.
The intro where you set up your playstation eye is laughable. You need light, but not too much. Really? I pity the retinas of anyone who naturally has too much light in their house for the eye. I think the main problem is that the eye is quite a short range device - especially in this game. You need a well lit area for it to work at its best, but unless you have lights a foot in front of your TV, you'll almost always cast a shadow over the area. I'm going to try bringing a couple of desk lamps into the lounge tomorrow, see if that helps.
And how the heck do you do the camera tasks? Make a photo that looks like you're friends. I was rolling around on the floor gurning like a loon, clicking the R1 button like mad, but nothing. I even tried drawing a smiley face to see if it had some basic smile detection and my lighting was too dark, but nothing.
And then your camera fills up. At no point does it mention you're keeping these photos. I thought I was just taking them for the challenge. So I go in to delete them, and you have to do them one by one! And its not even quick - press O to view a picture, then triangle to delete, then O to confirm (in a nasty XMB popup), then you have to wait for the photos to redraw. Took me ages to delete everything, while my 5-year old daughter kept asking me when we could get back to the game.
The drawing is kind of fun, but again there are pointless restrictions. "don't draw the picture too big, leave some space". They fail to mention you have to leave a LOT of space otherwise you're sitting there fidgeting backwards and left and twisting trying to get all the red bits to disappear. Why so fussy?
The playstation eye team are very technically talented, but I wish they'd hire some people who know how not to annoy the crap out of the entire family.
I'll persevere, at least to unlock the 'draw a model' bits but I'm not convinced it has staying power. Its already annoying a bit with the 'plate spinning' of 'oh I'm hungry/dirty/sad' a bit too often, especially when you just want to fiddle with it (!) and you need time to get used to the interface so don't want rushing
oh, and its practically impossible to wash your eyepet. No matter what motion you do with your hands for half an hour, it doesn't bubble up. It just does it when it feels like it.
if anyone does have any proper tips for the photo tasks and maybe how to lather up your eyepet properly, it'd be appreciated. I'm going in again tomorrow at the request of my children, and I don't want to cry in front of them.
