I know this has been discussed in other threads, but I figured it probably needed a bigger heads up and have started a new thread specifically for it.

Arriving right in time for the holiday SingStar party season, a free online update to SingStar PS3 will allow PS2 SingStars to upgrade to PS3 safe in the knowledge that they can take their whole collection of discs with them – while PS3 SingStars can now dust off their PS2 discs and relive the SingStar parties of holidays gone by.

All you’ll need to do is connect to PlayStation®Network when the online update goes live on December 16th – 10:00 AM GMT. Once it’s downloaded (automatically), you’re good to go. Start your SingStar PS3 session as normal by loading any SingStar PS3 disc – then, you’ll be able to swap it for any PS2 disc for the rest of the session.

It will be interesting to see how well this feature works.

I am assuming that the PS2 versions didn't have video? I wonder how they will look on hte PS3 and what will go on in the background?

I don't have any PS2 disks, but they sell for as little as 99p on Ebay.. Tempted to pick a few up.. Whilst there is no video, this is certainly cheaper than buying track via DLC for 99p per go!

Does anyone have any tips about which PS2 versions are worth going for and worth avoiding? I guess that this is subjective depending on your tastes, but there must be some lemons!

The PS2 discs had the full music videos in the background of their discs as the PS3 ones do. The PS3 versions on Singstar was meant to do one better by having HD Music videos but i don't think i've seen a single one yet?

Crikey, i've never seen any sell as low as that. Any i've been watching have gone for crazy money.....

Maybe you are right.. I was actually looking at the ones with no bids.. But there are many than have gone for £3ish

At the end of the day if the disks are fairly cheap, they are worth snapping up, just because of the comparison with the price of DLC!

There are a few on the SingStore IIRC, but there's not much London Studios can do until shooting music videos in HD becomes the standard.

Just got the update and tried it out. I have to say I'm quite impressed.

I was expecting it to simply play the PS2 disc as if it was a PS2 you were playing it on but what it does is just stream the tracks on the disc into the swanky PS3 Menus. It's looks as if it was a PS3 disc in the drive.

The poor DVD sounds like it's struggling to read the tracks quick enough but does a good job by still showing the video before choosing the song although a bit slower than the PS3 discs.

Video Quality is the same as it shows on PS2 which actually looks a tiny bit worse than if i was buying the track off the store.

Overall I'm impressed and would rather pick up PS2 discs cheap than buying from the store.

Now they just need to do the same with Buzz and maybe whole PS2 Back Compatibility

I also have just updated, however I cannot use the swap method to play my PS2 singstar title. I get the message this is not a singstar disc. Please remove the current disc and insert a singstar disc.

Yeah, it might help if you tell us which disc it is.

I've tested the following...

• SingStar 80s
• SingStar 90s
• SingStar Legends
• SingStar Rocks!
• SingStar Rock Ballards
• SingStar Singalong with Disney

... and they all worked without issue.

Very impressed with this update.

I only tried Singstar 80's but i plan to go and buy a few more now with this update.

Perhaps if they cached the disc with the HDD that it would load a bit faster?

Anyone find the disc drive loud when using a PS2 Disc?

Hurrah - all we need now is the wireless mic's and everything will be complete (don't mention Singstore!)

Just wondering if anybody knows if the patch is region specific? I have an NTSC (JAP) PS3 and wonder if it would read the PAL Singstar PS2 discs i have?

Hopefully they bypassed the region encoding with this patch but i doubt it.

Early reports from some users seem to suggest that they don't work.

What a great idea from Singstar. Having a 60GB PS3 we've been able to play our PS2 singstar disks quite happily, but I still might give this new approach a try.

Using the new method, does Singstar (PS3) capture a video (of the PS2 singstar song being played) via the Eye Camera?

But are you guys not quietly excited by the fact that a software update, albeit for Singstar, allows your PS2 Singstar game to be played, even though you chaps might be on a 40GB? I know you have to load up the PS3 game first, but its software loaded into memory that allows the PS2 disk to be "played".

It could be a sign of things to come, of software based backwards compatibility for 40GB/80GB PS3 owners. [I know that has been rumoured for a while]

It does indeed.

It captures both the Golden Moments and a 30 second clip from pre-determinted section of the song in exactly the same way to would a expect a track on a PS3 SingStar disc or DLC from the SingStore to. The 30 second clip cannot be uploaded to My SingStar online though due to licensing restrictions.

I'm not sure if it will herald a new coming of PS2 compatibility to be honest.

The tracks will probably be stored on the disk in a common format - probably in a folder like "SONGS->vinesride.mp4" (though it wont be MP4, but you get what I mean).

All the PS3 version is doing is loading those files in - I doubt it has anything to do with whether the disk is PS2 DVD or PS3 BR...

YES it will work on any PS3 but only after you have loaded in the ps3 singstar game and download/installed the new software up date....

this does not mean all other ps2 games will work

Tell you what mate, i went all over my local town yesterday and can't believe how hard it is to find PS2 games now. Saw a few New Singstar games in HMV but were £15 a pop. Neither GAME, Gamestation, HMV or Blockbusters had 2nd hand copies

yeah mate, I was in Gamestop (NI - Belfast) and they had POP for 10 quid and R&B for 19 quid

I'll check smyths tomorrow, they "were" doing them cheapish if i remember correctly

Bl00dy annoying this, I have a US PS3 and several UK PS2 Singstar discs.

Just got Abba Singstar and it's great the Mic's from the PS2 work fine on the PS3 but even after the update online the PAL PS2 Singstar disks will not work on my PS3. I juts keep getting the this is not a singstar disk error.

Annoying thing is the laser has gone on our PS2 so it is not reading games so I'll have to get it repaired if we are to use these games again.

I hope it is just to do with no PAL playback and not something sinister from Sony as Region Coding is just so un-necessary.

in this case i disagree, its down to record labels and artists licensing.

Yes but my UK PS3 Singstar disks work fine on the US PS3 as there is no region coding on the PS3 Games.

So what harm would it have made for the update to play UK and US titles.
