DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Thought I'd get this started cos I'm hoping for some feedback before I get the Renegade Edition at the weekend.
IGN/Joystiq/GameTrailers have all given very good reviews!

Anybody got it yet?
How difficult is it to pick up & play for the 1st time compared to the guitar on Guitar Hero?

(Hope the Mods don't think this Play & Help is premature...)

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

I played it at a mate's house last night (hes the daily leader at the local Gamestop ), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The music is excellent, really makes you want to get up and dance, while the difficulty curve seems to be set up nicely.

My mate took a little while to get the hang of it, but I jumped straight into medium and didn't find it too difficult... I DJ for a living though so thats to be expected maybe. I'm really looking forward to picking up my copy tomorrow.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

I saw there is already a mix pack on the PSN store £4.89

Gamestop gave it a solid 8/10 (dropped point due to the price)

I'll be picking this up later in the month so i will be looking forward to all your thoughts

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Can anyone comment if there are any issues having the controller on your lap?

I'm gunna try and get the missus to buy me this for Xmas.

Te DLC seems a little steep though.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Just picked this up this morning after trading all my games in at gamestation with CEX pricematch of course. £1.99 i paid for the normal edition in the end.

Initial thoughts.

Brilliant.

Will take some getting used to but so did guitar hero.

It all works perfectly.

The mixes are amazing. Surprisingly it can be easily played on your lap so no need to buy the renegade edition.

After my first set list about 6 trophies popped up but there are alot of hard looking trophies like complete hard or expert set list without missing a note.

I'm really enjoying this atm. And as we speak the missus is blasting through so she enjoys it too by the looks of it.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Just had a hands on in my local GAME - great fun & the soundtrack is spot on!
I'm by no means a spring chicken but couldn't stop my head nodding & my efforts getting a little too enthusiastic even in front of the small crowd that had gathered - the wife was suitably embarrassed!

The basic version does feel very cheap unfortunately but £169.99 for the Renegade Edition in store may price some of people out of the market!?

Renegade Edition £125 courtesy of ShopTo with free next day TNT delivery so I've just ordered - roll on Monday / Tuesday.

Yeah the DLC seems expensive but when you think of what has to be done versus a Rock Band / Guitar Hero track to actually produce the mix I guess you can start to justify it.

Really looking forward to our annual Xmas / New Year family bash - this will definitely get the party started!

GO DJ!

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Loving this! I'm a rock fan music wise but this is so much more fun than Guitar Hero, you actually feel like you're altering the mix rather than just playing along with it. The standard decks are also very good, not sure why some have said they feel cheap I don't agree.

Awesome game. HIGHLY recommended!

How fantastic would this be if you could mix your own mp3's though. Perhaps that will come in an update one day.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Hmm, well I tried it in a Game yesterday and thought it was disappointing. To me Guitar Hero does feel like you're playing a guitar (as far as gaming goes of course), if you miss a note then it goes quiet. But this didn't feel at all like mixing, it felt like steering something down a maze. If you move the cross-fader it should play a bad bit of music from the other track out of time of something, not go quiet. I didn't feel like I was actively controlling the mix at all.

And scratching with the green outermost key is ok, but struggled to do it with the blue inner key. If you've ever scratched vinyl on a slipmat it moves easily, but this turntable just doesn't change direction quickly.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

I absolutely love this. I bought it on Friday (Renegade edition) and paid the full whack for it!

I don't think it will have the mass market appeal because of the price though, which is a shame.

I'm finding it much harder than Guitar Hero as well. In GH you only have to worry about holding buttons and strumming. In DJH you have to scratch (directional) whilst holding buttons, press buttons on there own, crossfade (left/right/middle) and it becomes a nightmare to read the notes let alone execute them. I fear this will put off most people because the learning curve is pretty steep.

For those experienced players though, if you stick with it, it will be more fun to play than guitar hero.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

I'm surprised at how few posts there are on this game considering it's from the Activision 'Hero' stable. I thought there would be many a Guitar Hero / Rock Band veteran who would be taking the plunge.

Still waiting for mine. Currently trying to intercept my parcel so I can have it tomorrow rather than on Wednesday - cos I have a free afternoon!

* UPDATE

Managed to locate & intercept my Renegade Edition - I can collect after 08.00 tomorrow. Buzzing now! Can't wait to hear some of the mixes in full!

Picked this up today and am very impressed with the "deck" which is very good quality.

Game is hard, going to take a while to master this I think but loving it already

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

I watched the two vids on XBOX Live yesterday as I was interested (I used to be a DJ until I sold 1210s a few years back and I love GH and Rock Band) and I thought it looked really, really poor.

Maybe I just didn't get how it worked - and its a bit pricey to take a chance....

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Last night saw some improvement on my part. I've had it since Friday and I'm on hard already. Medium is ok to break you in but it isn't very taxing. This is from someone who plays GH on Expert though.

On Hard I find the hardest bit to learn is reading the note chart. Its quite a lot to take in when the two outer lines are moving out and in quite fast and you have to crossfade whilst directional scratching at the same time. But last night I started to get the hang of it more. I read a review which said this game HAS to be played on hard/expert for the most enjoyment and I'm finding that very true. On the lower levels it just doesn't feel authentic. Thats not necessarily a bad thing it just means it will put people off who stick to Medium on GH. One upside is you only have 3 buttons so you don't need to slide your fingers!!!

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

Been playing for a couple of hours now on Medium - Love it!

Quality of the Renegade Equipment is very good.
The deck is great with a textured edge to help grip when scratching.
The metal crossfade switch & effects dial are great touches.
The case / stand is sturdy & fully height adjustable

The music is exceptional with something for everyone.
The difficulty levels are more or less spot on with the introduction of new skills at higher levels feeling just right.

Medium isn't too taxing as has been mentioned - so I think I'll be joining those who play on Hard maybe even Expert?

Is it better than Guitar Hero like some reviewers claim? Probably. Dare I say definitely?

A great addition to the 'Hero' games & genuinely deserves it's review scores.

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

I've had this game for a few days now and I can't seem to put it down.

I'm terrible at GH so was worried that I may not get on too well with this but have been playing on medium and I love it.

I've played through all the set lists and I'm now going back to up my star levels on each one to unlock all the extras but i do feel medium is a good challenge especially on the scratch perverts set. (I cant get more than two stars on noisia)

Overall I'm very impressed with this game and some of the mixes are really good. Sure it wont be long until I graduate to hard but having paid £90 I've no regrets at all in buying this.

Could some answer a few questions please.

1) Is it online 2player? How does that work?
2) Whats the difference between the 2 versions?

I dont own the game yet so would like someone who does to also provide comment on the online please. But from what I know the answers are:

1) yes there is online, I believe you can do a battle but you both play along to the full mix and whoeever scores higher wins. Dont think it splits bits out for each person.

2) I believe the differences are that renegade edition has a better quality build on the decks controller. also has a big carry case which converts into a stand. I think you also get some extra mixes (eminem) which will be DLC later.

1. Yes it is online & it's DJ v DJ full track. Can play local 2 player too!
2. Standard is grey & black deck + game.
Renegade is all black polished deck with gold trim & metal Fader/effects dial + carry case which doubles up as an adjustable height stand + exclusive Jay-Z & Eminem CD + game.

Worth it for the case/stand alone in my opinion as it's great for gaming on & storage.
As mentioned before ShopTo is the best place to get Renegade it's £125 with free next day TNT delivery. I think the standard is approx. £80 - £90.

Hope that helps you pal. From one Yid to another - this is a great game. Well worth the money!

Re: DJ Hero - Play & Help Thread

think the renegade edition is the same hardware with different switches/knobs/colours ?

I'm not sure on this, it's great as a game, but I was expecting it to be a bit more 'musical', like, you can't really get it wrong, you either manage to activate the samples or not....if you mis-time a scratch or change the cross fader at the wrong time it just stops playing for a bit or until you hot the next sample/scratch etc

each to their own but I'm not too impressed with the tracks, I bought it on a bit of an impulse after seeing 1 or 2 tracks on youtube, if I was more in to the tracks I'd be much more 'in' to it but it just seems like a mission having to listen to some of the guff

would have been better if there was a story mode or something

How are you guys getting on with the fader?

I have just seen mine (Renegade edition which is for xmas) and I noticed the switch could be tricky when trying to get it in the middle. It seems to go slightly over and not click into the middle position.

Cheers

Personally I've not had any problems. I have read some people complaining about it but for me it's just about practise. After a couple hours of playing muscle memory kicks in and it does not even become an issue.

Roll on xmas eh? It's a great game, you'll love it
