Vob file to big

Hi i have acquired a file about 4.8 gb converted it to a vob and split it in two so both files are smaller than 4 gb to play it back on my ps3. It is still to big though allthough the bigger file is now only 3.9 gb so i must have .1 or more on my usb stick ? the only folder i have on it is one called video that has nothingels in it but i need this folder to put files into to playback on my ps3 ?

Re: Vob file to big

Still too big for what ? You don't tell us what you're using, but i'll assume it's a 4GB pendrive...

Folder can be called whatever, you will just need to press Triangle and select Display All.

But you're probably cutting it a bit fine at 3.9gb, you may need to convert again with just slightly more compression.

Re: Vob file to big

I don't really understand what you are saying to be honest. The PS3 will play individual files that are larger than 4GB no problem. If you have split a 4.8GB up, then this will fit onto a recordable DVD which the PS3 will play back from no problem.

If you only have a 4GB USB memory stick, why don't you run the original file through the splitter programme again with a different file size limit?

And yes, the video clip needs to be saved in a folder named VIDEO. You can still have other stuff saved on it, but it will only pick up video clips saved in there.

Re: Vob file to big

As mentioned, he'll need to re-run it through something like DVDShrink with more compression, splitting the file obviously won't make any difference.

You don't have to have any file in any particular folder...

Re: Vob file to big

Is it possible to split the file so both bits are about the same file size ?

Re: Vob file to big

because as daft as it sounds, a 4gb usb stick, will likely be quite a bit under 4gb

Re: Vob file to big

And also the 3.9GB file will most likely be around 4.1GB on disk...

You're going to need to compress it more...unless you have another pendrive...what are you using to compress/split ?

Re: Vob file to big

Recompressing as Axum suggests will only work assuming you have a standard DVD compliant MPEG-2 video stream in the .vob file. DVD Shrink only works with these files in a DVD structure as far as I know anyway - i.e a VIDEO_TS folder with the .vob/.ifo/.bup files saved in it. So splitting the file will work fine.

If it is indeed a DVD compliant DVD .vob use the following guide/free software to do it:

SPLIT A LARGE VOB FILE INTO 1GB CHUNKS AND AUTHOR - VideoHelp.com

It seems a bit long winded but if you have a search on the videohelp website there are probably other ways of doing this.

If though the file has come from perhaps a HD video clip originally saved in a .mkv container & transcoded to .vob using something like MKV2VOB - you can change the settings in this to alter the output size of each file when splitting.

Re: Vob file to big

I copy movies to the PS3 when they are over 4gb over WiFi but you should be able to do the same with ethernet but never tried it. The reason I do this is because they don't fit onto my fat32 external hard drives.

Re: Vob file to big

Ahh ok, so it was an HD file, although that doesn't really make any difference...good to hear it's sorted.

You could put the files (split up) onto your external HDD y2k, copy them from that onto the PS3 HDD, then play as i think it will now play files sequentially due to latest firmware release, i'm not sure if it'll work the same way playing directly off the external HDD though, but streaming is a better option anyway..

Re: Vob file to big

I copy the files that are over 4gb to my PS3 from my laptop over the wireless and when they are on the PS3's hard drive they play fine no matter what size they are, takes a bit of time to copy over the WiFi but thats ok.

EDIT- I just use the external drives to transfer stuff to the PS3.

Re: Vob file to big

Yeah, understand that, i'm saying that you could split the file into chunks, so each chunk is under 4GB, put them on your USB HDD, then copy them off that onto the PS3, as it now supports Video playlists....what i'm not sure about is if you could just keep them on the USB HDD and have the PS3 play in order...

Yea was thinking of splitting them up before but would rather have them in 1 big file on the PS3. Have about 200 files in different folders in the video bit as it is now
