Re: DivX 7.0 will Support MKV

Nice find. Let's hope sony update the codec on the Ps3 when DivX 7.0 is released. As good as MKV2VOB is I'd love to just stream MKV's as they are.

Re: DivX 7.0 will Support MKV

Yes - it does sound good news, especially for becomming practically the ultimate media center!

DivX 7.0 has been in development for a few months now (at least) and can't really seem to find any updates on release.

Sony should deffo incorporate this update of the DivX codec into a firmware update since the PS3 is a certified product.

Not sure whether Xbox will do the same..?

Re: DivX 7.0 will Support MKV

But divx is a codec and mkv is a container format?

Yes and the DivX codec currently outputs to the AVI container format. What they have said is that from Version 7.0 onwards the DivX codec will output to the MKV container format.

If this is going to happen, and we wouldnt need mkv2vob, what would happen with the soundtrack as most mkv files come with dts?

Indeed, hadn't thought of that

Looks like MKV's with DTS will still need running through a DTS to AC3 converter. The popcorn hour A100 also has the same issue with DTS audio in MKV's so there are plenty of converters out there. (A110 model does play DTS in MKV's)

Then again thinking about it does the PS3 just not decode DTS on streamed videos? will it still pass through DTS audio if you have it set to Bitstream for the Amp to decode?

Not sure, need to play with my amp settings but i thought playback off HDD does not support DTS full-stop.

Burn that same file to disc and it will play back fine however....?!

You thought right.

Correct-the PS3 does not play DTS audio tracks from files on the HDD.

If you could play MKV files straight 'off the bat' as it were, including the DTS audio track then that would make the PS3 a good contender for the ultimate media centre!

Re: DivX 7.0 will Support MKV

Do we still have the 2gb FAT32 file size limit? How big is average MKV HD (Blu-ray quality) movie? Is there any way of getting around the 2gb limit?

I'm not all that clued up on this subject.

Fat32 size limit is 4Gb.

Average 720p BR-Rip is 4.5Gb. There is a way round it...It's streaming

Or connect to your streaming software and copy across to PS3 as internal disk isn't fat32

Re: DivX 7.0 will Support MKV

It would be good to get some sort of reason behind the FAT32 decision - seems very strange esp considering PS3 lead the way for HD. I mean, it's almost a knock on effect; when buying a PS3, ideally you need a HDTV.

Dual Layer DVD is best way round such a thing mentioned above, however I am in the process of sticking everything on my 1TB external HDD and are trying to get out of using disc media.

I'm hoping that v.soon they will release this DivX and Sony will an issue a major firmware update just before XMAS like they did with version 2.0.

Yeah, no-one wants to burn anymore, as soon as mkv playback with DTS is supported playing off HDD then we're all pretty much set

Re: DivX 7.0 will Support MKV

Who wants to sit burning DVD's? Streamings the best way. no waiting for discs to burn or files to copy over just browse your NAS/PC hosted video library and watch what you want

Streaming to my PS3 is like a new set of TV channels in my house.

Yep I use Medialink or Eyeconnect to stream (although there is the whole mp4 streaming issue so where needed I copy to the HD with those 2 utilities).

DivX 7.0 Beta 1 is now released...

DivX 7 Playback Preview | DivX Labs - Everywhere Communication Occurs Community Happens

Download Free DivX 7 (7.0) Beta 1 Player with H.264 AAC MKV (Freeware)

Guess as it is in Beta mode a full release could be a few months away with commercially support being a few months after that..?
