New media server for the PS3

Hi, I'm currently developing in Java language a new media server specifically made for the PS3, for Windows (and Linux) based on avisynth/mplayer for the video playing part and ffmpeg for the encoding part.
I actually found no media servers working very well on my computer, so I decided to make mine ! Also for the fun , as it's quite interesting to develop this. With this, I can transcode 1080p movies on Windows without stuttering on a simple core 2 duo (thanks to CoreAVC)

Anyway, I've created a small page with all details explained: you can take a look here

Feedbacks welcome !

thanks,

I've bookmarked the page to try at a later date. Do you have any screenshots of the PC and PS3 screens?

Sorry there was a small glitch in the server IP address binding. I've made a new version, on the same site. In case of server not recognized again, you can force the "hostname" property (the valid IP address of your computer on the network) on the pms.conf configuration file. Please tell me if it's OK!

Re: New media server for the PS3

I've tried streaming 720p Vob's/720p mpg's and some SD DivX avi's and it just says data corrupted for everyfile.

also noticed i see everyfile twice through the XMB?

The app log says it's trying to transcode all of these files; TVersity currently streams them all "as is"?

PC isn't a great spec a P4D 2.8Ghz, 4Gb ram but PC and PS3 connected at 100mb via 200mb Homeplugs on Cat5 and have no issues streaming these files with Tversity

Yes, the first occurence of the file is streamed "as is", and the second occurence is transcoded, so you can choose it if the first one not playing on the ps3 (but it should work on most mpg/avi I think). Transcode is essentially useful for mkv/mov/etc.
Also if something wrong you can send me by mail (see website) if you want the more detailed logfile "pms.log" present in the "lib" subdirectory

Yes I think that's the cause of your problem with the "data corrupted" message. I haven't upgraded yet my PS3 so there are still some holes in the application.
Anyway I've just uploaded a new version on the site. It should be OK now (I hope )

Thank for testing !

Thanks for the prompt replies. I'll download the new version today and test. 95% of my PS3 usage is Media streaming so it will get tested throughly

One thing i did notice is that it gives a thumbnail for Videos but no albumart for music (all my music is fully albumart ID3 tagged)

TVersity is the opposite of this and gives Albumart for music but no thumbnail for video?

Just curious ?

Re: New media server for the PS3

finally got round to downloading the latest version so will be giving it some testing tonight.

couple of quick questions though:

Can i turn off the feature that displays the video once for "as is" and once for "transcode" reason being all my media is PS3 friendly so i don't need trancoding. I only really want to see the "as is" stuff?

Secondly in order to keep my library useable for the wife and kids i only want show one drive/folder on the PC so it's not too confusing for the kids to find their stuff. Any way of restricting what drives/folders are shown?

(Edit: just spotted the line for sharing folders in the PMS.conf file; I assume syntax for shared folders in this line is just "drive letter:\folder?)

Actually no you can't, but I've done it for the next version. And you are also right for the folders configuration. But honestly, if you are using the server just for streaming, you will not be very surprised It's like any other upnp server, as I've focused mainly on the transcoding/performance part, and don't pretend to stream faster than any other servers on the market.
But still, if you like it and have some thoughts/ideas to share, you're welcome

cool; not after the bells and whistles as i'm streaming from a low powered machine to reduce Kwh.

I just like the small footprint

video thumbnails are good. Don't know why TVersity can't add these as WMP11 does but i just dislike WMP11 for streaming. too clunky and slow.

Re: New media server for the PS3

Sd streaming works fine but am getting quite bad stuttering streaming 720p vob's.

these Vob's playback fine using TVersity and my PS3 is connected via 200mb Homeplugs so I'm happy that bandwidth isn't the issue.

Re: New media server for the PS3

PROBLEM - DVBviewer BBC HD recordings

EDIT resolved New media server for the PS3

I have been recording BBC HD using DVBviewer PRO for quite some time now and they play natively in all their hidef glory on the PS3 without any modification (no re-wrapping/remuxing of the original .TS file to .m2ts)

DVBViewer recordings of BBC HD on Astra 28(H.264,AC3 5 or 2 channel) made after running PMS today have no audio on the PS3 . this is both from streaming (from TVersity or PMS) and burned copy of recordings. (they do have audio when played in nero showtime on PC)

HD Recordings made prior to running PMS stream perfectly on PS3 (both from TVersity and PMS)

Did a rollback to restore point 2 days ago and made some fresh recording but still the new HD recordings still have no audio on PS3 (they have audio when played in nero showtime on PC)

Not sure what has occurred as I have made no changes to DVBviewer but meantime you should maybe warn DVBviewer users about running this on the same machine for now.

Any ideas on rectifying this most welcome.

regards,
potnoodles

Hi ,
I'm honestly clueless about that. The only thing who can set this up is maybe the optional installation of Avisynth (have you done it ?) which can mess up your audio/video software configuration. The program in itself is harmless, I'm quite sure of it (it's just some sockets/pipes intercommunication between ps3/pc/ffmpeg after all)

P.S. looks much nicer now "Transcode" vids are viewed in a seperate folder in XMB

Re: New media server for the PS3

great job... it works just fine with me... i really had major problem playing my MKVs mostly with other media servers, but now everything works like a charm...i am sending the files from my PC via wifi and i have connected PS3 to the router through cable...this way 720p works perfect... i havent yet tried 1080p... when i had both my PC and PS3 connected via WIFI, 720p movies didnt work well at all... i also made a few mods to the config file (changed the code of subtitles to my country's and a few other minor changes) and im happy to say everything is just fine... many thanx... keep up the good work

Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo 327Kbps [Audio]

At first look it seems that transcoding has taken place on the audio - however
Nero Showtime plays all these recordings and also reveals that the audio is in fact
Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 384Kbps [Audio] or Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 384Kbps [Audio] even though the file properties say otherwise.

I still have no idea what to do to fix DVBViewer (or Vista?)

Re: New media server for the PS3

This is promising news indeed, haven't tried the app myself yet, I guess i'm waiting for a solid "it works fine with 1080p files" kinda feedback as it only takes literally minutes to transcode most of the 720p files I come across, but 1080p...well...we all know that's another matter...

Pretty simple:
Seems that PMS can't find the necessary .exe (ffmpeg, mencoder, mplayer). Did you change anything regarding the directory structure (PMS Subfolders)? You should get 2 subdirectories (/lib and /win32). Inside the win32 subdir there should be the ffmpeg.exe mencoder.exe mplayer.exe.

How did you unzip the archive? Did your Winzip or so created the subdirectories?

Cheers

"minutes to transcode .. 720p"
Not sure of that. It's easy to stream 720p, or to remux them with tsmuxer.
However, when you need to reencode them (ex to include subtitles), it'll take you hours (using megui+x264 for example) to permanently add the subs in the video and reencode it.

That's one of the main idea of PMS: transcode on the fly, in real time.

Re: New media server for the PS3

mkv2vob transcodes mostly all the 720p files i have in minutes as all it's doing is renaming the container (at least that's what i think it's doing)

I tend to steer clear of subtitled files, but i get what you're saying with that example.

You misunderstand my problem - I can get PMS to work no problem - but since using it my DVBviewer recordings of bbc hd will no longer play on PS3 because the audio stream is misrepresented. I am trying to fix my system ie undo whatever running PMS has done.
