Question Best multi-disk NAS for PS3 streaming?

Hey All,

I have been searching around and wondered what peoples views are on the best multi-disk NAS for the PS3. My current setup is a couple of Buffalo 250GB LinkStations, one for backup with Tversity running on my PC. I would like to replace the whole lot with a single box solution using either Raid 1 or 5.

Options I have looked at are Buffalo LinkStation Quad, NetGear ReadyNAS, QNap TS-219P and the Synology DS209+II units. I am only looking for 500GB to 1TB of usable space.

I am very happy with the current Buffalo units but searching on the Buffalo units and PS3 compatibility brings up lots of old threads with issues, do these issues still exist?

What is the difference between a uPnP AV & DNLA server?

Thanks.

Best multidisk NAS is a low powered PC

means you can utilise the extra functionailty of PS3 Media Server...

If you want a 'proper' NAS then go for the Qnap though....

Well I don't know about 'best' but I am very happy with my QNAP TS-210 and it seems very good value compared to the TS-219.

I agree with Uridium I managed to bag a Quad Core mini pc for about the same price of a NAS. I think going the PC route gives you a few more options particulalry if streaming HD video is high on your list as the extra bit of CPU power will help with any transcoding.

Gateway sx2800 for $400, works a treat and looks pretty decent for the living room.

I'm using a Dell Optiplex small form factor desktop.

Powerful enough for 720p Transcodes (later Core2 machines will handle 1080p)

Being office based desktops they are designed to be left on 24x7 so have low output PSU's and are very quiet. Ideal for always on media servers.....

Whats the difference in power consumption between a dedicated NAS and say a small PC like you have mate ?

I'm very close to dropping 300 quid on a QNAP 410.

Quite a lot. Your unlikely to hit the wrong side of 20-30w with a NAS in use and around a 1/3rd of that when idle.

Even my low powered machine uses 75w(ish) on idle and around 175-200w in use.

I still prefer to use a PC though for the extra flexibility/functionality PS3 Media Server gives me.....and if you planning on streaming HD type stuff your still going to have to have a PC somewhere to tweak the files etc...

£300 will buy you a fast Optiplex 745 core2 'ex-corp' small form factor PC with a couple TB's of disk though

Recently I have got into the (bad) habit of leaving my PC on 24/7 so a much lower powered NAS really appeals. I don't use either of my PS3s to stream as I have an HTPC in the living room and a Popcorn Hour for the bedroom.

Yeah can waste a lot of leccy that way. Mine is set to go into standby if not streaming and i just wake it up using a Wakeon Lan webpage through the Ps3 browser if need be.

there are already some patches around for PS3 Media Server to do a remote pc shutdown through the PS3 XMB using Ps3 Media Server. hopefully this will be incorporated into a full version soon.

Sounds like a NAS is a better option for you though.
