Since when?

Did the PS3 play MKV files on the fly? Have I missed an update or something?

Recently sold my old PS3 for a new slim and it now plays MKVs fine!?

You sure.....??

Is the MKV on the PS3 itself or you streaming it from a PC?

Yeah I'm certain, I copied Inglorious Basterds, Night at the museum 2 and shut down my PC to make sure and it plays perfectly fine.

What Media Server app do you use? If you copied them using a media server app chances are it's transcoded them to a PS3 native format as it copied them over.

Press the select button during playback to get details of the filename/codec etc..

PS3 doesn't support MKV, simple as that.

I'm sure its still in MKV format, I use PS3 media server with auto transcode on.

Just copied the files over from the media server, didn't think it changes the format when copying over a file.

Will check this when I get home tonight.

There's your answer then, you've copied over the transcoded version (or it might have been a simple remux - more likely if it was a 720p mkv to start with), which is why it plays...

I never knew PS3 media server did this, I always used to use MKV2VOB to remux when I want to play a MKV direct from the PS3.

Ah well a little less hassle now I know it can do this.

Oh Inglorious Basterds is 720p but Night at the Museum 2 is 1080p

That's what PS3MS was created for to be honest, on-the-fly transcoding, there are loads of other features obviously, but this is it's primary (i think) benefit, as it does it better than other streamers and is more customizable.

That's the point, you're not playing a MKV directly, you're changing it to a format the PS3 can play, it's no longer a mkv file.

720p's (95% +) only require a remux (if the sound is DTS and you want to keep it, or you need to change it to AC3) and a container change - this takes minutes. 1080p's (around 50% or so) require a FULL transcode, depending on settings etc that will take hours, the other 50% take a little longer than most 720p's as it's doing the same thing.

Yeah I know this, I just never knew PS3 media server will remux/transcode a 720p/1080p file when just copying a MKV to the PS3 which I'm guessing it has done.

It depends on where you copy it from via the PS3MS GUI on the XMB, if you don't grab it from the right folder it'll just copy the original file over (or maybe it doesn't if you have a setting checked, not sure) - which will be unplayable.
