Question Streaming AVI to PS3 stutters, but DVDs are perfect!

Hey everyone!

I'm experiencing a very interesting situation here with my PS3...I can stream DVDs to my PS3 no problem (using PS3 Media Server, I just point it at the VIDEO_TS folder and it works great), but when I try to stream a DivX/Xvid movie, I get periodic stuttering. This stuttering usually lasts about 5 seconds in length and can appear as often as every 30 seconds...although sometimes I'm lucky and can go a full 10 minutes without a stutter.

It's crazy annoying to watch an .avi movie!

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit retail on a pretty beefy computer (don't remember the exact specs but I've got 4GB of ram and I believe a Quad Processor) I've tried streaming to the PC using both WMP12 and PS3MediaServer. My PC is hardwired to my router, and my PS3 is using the wireless (but I can't imagine this is a WiFi bandwidth issue since it streamed a DVD flawlessly).

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I'm usually pretty darn good at troubleshooting these things, but this one is really baffling me!

It'll probably be the bitrate, try setting it to a low level and then try and stream, see what happens.... You could always copy it to the PS3 HDD if that doesn't work.

Thanks Axum, I'll try that tonight...but like I had mentioned, I streamed a full DVD without any hiccups at all. That would be a higher bitrate than a DivX right?

Theoretically yes i guess it should be, but AVI files seem to be notorious in causing these bitrate issues... Have a search on here, i'm sure there's some other posts about it that may offer better advice..

Just an update, I think this should help others out.

When you play DivX movies using PS3 Media Server, I found that if you go to the folder where your movie is located (via the PS3), you will see the movie file along with a TRANSCODE folder. Go into that folder, and I think one more folder below that, and you will find another movie file that has MEncode tacked on the end of the name.

(This is going by memory, sorry if I don't have the names exactly right.)

Anyhoo, playing *that* file works flawlessly.

Now to figure out if I can get 1080p files to stream

So that's using a different process to encode the original file, which presumably doesn't suffer from the fluctuations in bitrate that you've been having....if indeed that was the problem in the first place...
