PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

Hi Guys,

AIM: I have a few backed up blu-rays on my file server that I want to play on my bluray widescreen tv by streaming them to the PS3 (Which is connected to the TV obviously).

I'm using TwonkyMedia server to stream all the video content from the file server to the PS3. This works really well and all the video files show up (.m2ts, mkv's etc...)

I have been able to play the largest .mt2s file (which is the movie itself) perfectly with sound aswell...and nothing has needed to be encoded.

I want to know if its possible to play the complete blu-ray folder structure so this will load up with all the menu's etc...as if you'd play the disc in the ps3 itself. Is this possible?

TIA!

Not via streaming, USB/Disc playback only i'm afraid.

Why not?

Is this a limitation on the PS3 or something else?

Yes it's a limitation of the DLNA implementation on the PS3.

Could be fixed by a firmware update by sony but Media streaming functionality updates seem a long way down Sony's list in FW updates.

Re: PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

Would the DTS-playback enablement (is that a word ?) also come into it ?

hmm interesting.

Also do you think sony has any plans to make .mkv native to ps3 formats any time soon via a firmware update?

Re: PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

I very much doubt it, although you never know what with these plethora of media players that are coming onto the market, like the WDTV/Xtreamer etc...they may leave it to those equipment makers to take care of, but they might think they can take some of their market too...

Re: PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

I do actually think it will come.

I've always seen them not adding MKV support purely down to piracy issues (it would take them minutes to code MKV support)

Sony being a large movie producer and also having license rights to BluRay see the popularity of MKV rips eating into BluRay sales and it would almost be hypocritcal of them to allow their players to have MKV compatibility but now the Korean's (LG/Samsung etc..) are adding MKV support to there BD players it's only a matter of time until Sony add it to keep their device sales up.

There was a similar delay with the Japanese DVD players adopting DivX due to piracy issues until korean/chinese players started flooding the market and eating into there sales. It's almost impossible NOt to buy a DVD player now with DivX compatibility and how many legitimate videos encoded in DivX have you seen

Re: PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

By the time they do it, another format will have reared it's head most likely!!

It may take moments to integrate support, but they will then need to sort out the licensing of DTS won't they ? But presumably that's not a big thing...

Re: PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

It'll come about - they will realise that they will lose the market in that area if they do not. the same was said when burning CDs became popular. Large outcry, then in the end Sony and other makers release Living room Hardware that enabled you to copy one CD to another. The same happened with DVDs.
I beleive that they will be hypocritcal in the fact that as always they will resist up to a point, then fold on the matter and offer everything you need to do so.

Re: PS3 + Media Sharing/Streaming + Ripped Blu-Rays

Well, it's the "holy grail" in terms of media playback for the PS3, so let's hope so!!

If it was that easy, and if the PS3 was open sourced...i'd get someone to code the mkv format in.

After this weekend, I'm even more annoyed with Sony for not has this sorted - for god's sake even my Samsung TV can play back MKVs - MY TV??????

Only thing is there is no network transfer for access to my NAS - but hey I'm half way there.

Sony - so lame!

To be fair to Sony it's not as if they've ever claimed it does playback MKV.

I have a friend with a Samsung Panel one of the latest 'pretend LED's" Yeah it supports MKV but bitrates are pathetic. Anything over about 5mbps and it starts spitting it's dummy.

True, true, but I just think it's lame to part sell the PS3 as a media solution, and not have the ability to play one of the most popular (or at least one with the potential to become the most popular) file formats - yes I know its a container etc etc.

I have a B620, and the used the instructions in this thread to "unlock" the mkv playback function..... http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-t...-playback.html
so far no problems.
