Media streaming - HELP please!

For quite some time now I have successfully streamed data from my PC to my PS3 via TVersity and MediaPlayer and more recently via the excellent PS3 Media Server with no real problems.

A friend of mine has recently acquired a PS3 and has been having problems and has asked me to help. The PS3 itself works fine and accesses the internet OK, plays games etc. And from MY laptop logged into HIS network (and his router of course) it happily streams data. But his own PC (laptop) will not stream data. PS3 Media Server on his PC sees the PS3 and, looking at the 'Traces', appears to do everything it should do in trying to connect to the PS3 - ('It's ready! You should see the server appears on XMB etc') but whatever I try the media server is not recognised by the PS3. I've disabled firewalls and checked that his router is not in some way blocking access but to no avail. UPnP is enabled - I've read the help link supplied in the PS3 FAQs - can't think what the problem could be.

But networking has always been a bit of a mystery to me so I'd very much appreciate any feedback from you guys out there!

First things to try

- Double check that ALL firewall/security software is disabled (just to test) inc. windows firewall

- Try changing the Port number of PS3MS from 5001 (try 5005) in general settings

-Try forcing the IP address of his PC in PS3MS general settings tab

- Browse to C:\Program files\ps3 media server and paste the content of the file named "debug.log" on here (open it in notepad) as this will give us some more to work on....
(if file is very large delete the content, save and restart Ps3MS to recapture any errors)

I'll try the things you've suggested and will post the debug log if I get no joy.

One other thing I should have made clear and which may be helpful is that the Windows Media Player server is also not seen by the PS3. With MY laptop both the PS3MS and MediaPlayer media servers are recognised. Your fixes seem only to apply to sorting out the PS3MS - maybe I'm mistaken here? - and that the problem may not be PS3MS specific.

If it's not seeing any DLNA servers then that basically points to it being either a Network or firewall config issue.

Reason i say stick with PS3MS is at least it gives you some logging info and some network config options config so you can look at the trace log for some clues.

With WMP you get nothing.....

Shows PS3MS has seen the PS3 on IP address 192.168.0.3

Can you ping the PS3 from the PC using that IP address?

Double check that there are no firewalls still running. iirc in WinXP you can have firewall's running on Individual network cards.

Also worth trying to run the app with admin rights (if using the run as a service option Change the account the service runs as to a user account with local admin rights instead of the default Local system account.

I'd also have a quick search here as there are posts on an almost daily basis for "PS3/PC not connecting"
