Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

Hi,

Is there a guide by chance here for hooking a PC to a PS3 via crossover cable?

Right now:
a. I have a "Wireless ISP", so I have no router. I can connect 2 PC's, a laptop, and the PS3 all independently to the internet no problem wirelessly.
b. I ran a crossover cable from my PC to PS3 and setup a static IP from some #'s a guy gave me. (I'm lost on IP #'s btw)
c. I bridged my USB wireless adapter and NIC on PC.

I get internet to the PS3 via the PC alright, but I've tried:
WMP11
Tveristy
PS3 Media Server
Can't see the PS3 on any.

I've been through countless FAQ's and posts trying all sorts of things. I can post more IP details etc. later if need be. For now just wondering if there may be a step by step guide?

Also I guess here's an all-in-one question before I go any further: Is it possble to file share and pass inetrnet simultaneously via crossover cable from a PC to PS3? Or does it have to be setup as one or the other? I've read all sorts of things, like straight cable, enable ICS, etc...

If anyone has done this I would sure be inetrested in the details.

Thx,
-SteveO..

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

Does your PC have a gigabit network card?

If so you don't need a Crossover cable; a standard Cat5 cable will be fine.

Auto crossover is built into the Gigabit ethernet standard.

Just set to PC and PS3 to have different IP addresses in the same subnet and set the PS3 to use the IP address of the PC as it's gateway.

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

Yes PC has Gigabit.

I only have a "crossover cable". 35'. I could go buy another straight cable I guess, but since Gigabit has "autocrossover" I'm guessing this crossover cable should work as it then won't need to "Auto-Cross"?

"Just set to PC and PS3 to have different IP addresses in the same subnet and set the PS3 to use the IP address of the PC as it's gateway."
OK well the IP address changes when I bridge the connections. Can you help me "fill in the blanks"? If you can you'll be the only guy in a week and 5 different message boards who has the answer:

Remember I have a "Wireless ISP".

Here's something to note that I have noticed:
192.168.1.236 < PC Wireless Adapter Bridged
192.168.1.248 < PC Wireless Adapter UnBridged

Maybe I never had the NIC configured right before bridging..?
I think I need to start with some new IP #'s.
Then I'll bridge the connections etc. and see what happens.

----Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection 3:
Only Incoming Connection from my ISP
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter #3
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . .: Yes
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . .: 192.168.1.248(Preferred) will say .236 when bridged with NIC
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . .: 192.168.1.10
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . .: Enabled

----PC NIC to PS3
IP: Address:.........................
Subnet Mask: ......................
Default Gateway: .................
Preferred DNS: .....................
Alternate DNS: .....................

----PS3-
IP Address: .........................
Subnet Mask: ......................
Default Router: ....................
Preferred DNS: .....................
Alternate DNS: .....................
UPnP...................................(enabled?/disabled?)

In the meantime another guy said it won't work without a router:

"When using a bridged connection your PC is acting as the gateway. It puts it on a different subnet because your PS3 is on a different network. If you want them to talk to each other you would have to use Windows ICS, which probably won't work.

Basically the only way to network them is to connect them both to the same network device as clients. You said you have a wireless router, set it up as a DHCP server with no Internet access. Connect your PS3 wirelessly to the router. Connect your PC with a straight-through cable to your router into one of the LAN ports (not WAN). Straight-through cables are only a few dollars at any decent computer store and you can sometimes get them at dollar stores. Connect your PC's wireless adapter to the Internet. Do not bridge the connections.

At this point you should be able to see the PC on the PS3. If you can't, log in to your router and check DHCP assignments, see who's connected and how. You can then play with Windows ICS and try and get the Internet going on your PS3, but good luck with that. "...

Thx,

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

First off.....Afraid i can only help out with "to the best of my knowledge level" as I have a standard ADSL connection and single NIC PC connected to my PS3's with switches so am unable to test any of this. That said......

Dunno why you've been told ICS won't work. I can't see any reason why it won't. Your PC is getting it's WWW connection through the wireless NIC; just share that with ICS and point the PS3 to that IP address as it's default gateway.

Obvious question coming up here so apologies if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs but when trying to get the media connection with PS3MS etc.. up and running have you actually tried pinging the PS3 from the PC?

Assuming it pings ok next make sure ALL firewalls are turned off (just temporarily).

Next try specifiying the NIC on the PC that is connected to the PS3 in PS3MS general settings tab and also try using a different port to the defaul 5001 in PS3MS as this is often another contentious issue. I can NEVER get a connection using 5001 (I use 5005)

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

HaHa, OK please bear with me also. I'm no networking guru by any means and now I'm really spinning in circles.

Two methods I've read to connect PC to PS3 via wired:
1. Bridge (PC NIC to PS3) with internet connection to PC. Setup static IP's on PS3 and PC.
2. Don't Bridge but enable ICS on PC NIC to PS3.

It sounds like you are saying use Method 2.

When you say "Your PC is getting it's WWW connection through the wireless NIC". Depends on what you mean.

Here's my PC:
a. "Wireless ISP Connection" > USB Adapter to PC
b. PC also has 2 RJ-45 NIC Connections. I have one of them wired via crossover cable to PS3.

So if your saying the NIC is automatically getting internet via the USB wireless adapter through the PC I don't know. Not without bridging or ICS right?

From what I gather you say enable ICS on the NIC (connected to PS3) and share it with the USB Adapter for internet? No bridging involved right?

It sounds like our setups are similar in that neither of us have a router. You get internet via DSL line to PC and I get mine Wirelessy through the USB adapter. You are passing internet through your PC to the PS3 and streaming I can't see why I shouldn't be able to either.

Do I need to make any IP changes to the NIC card before I enable ICS, or just enable it and match the PS3's default gateway to that IP address of the PC? Like I'll enable ICS then run ipconfig and use those numbers?

I'll try the pinging, port # changes, pointing PS3MS to the NIC etc also.

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

Well I enabled ICS on the Wireless USB Adapter, told it to share with NIC to PS3. The good news is I still have internet on the PC. Last time I tried ICS it killed my connection.

Also I can ping the PS3, get 9ms ave return.

Here are my settings. I'm not sure whether you meant match the PS3 gateway to the PC (a)NIC or (b)Wireless Adapter:

I must have something wrong here:

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection 3:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : colubris.lan
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter #3
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . .: Yes
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . ..: 192.168.1.248(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . ..: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . ..: 192.168.1.10
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . ..: 192.168.1.10
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce 1000 Mbps Ethernet # 2
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . .......: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . ....Yes
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 192.168.1.247(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . ........: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . ......: 192.168.1.248
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . ........: 192.168.1.10
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . ..........: 192.168.1.11
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . ....... : Enabled

PS3-
IP Address: ............................: 192.168.1.246
Subnet Mask: ..........................: 255.255.255.0
Default Router: .......................: 192.168.1.248
Preferred DNS: .........................: 192.168.1.10
Alternate DNS: .........................: 192.168.1.11

Tried forcing PS3MS to use Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2 and port 5005, still doesn't find anything. I have network discovery and on, firewalls disabled, etc..

Unless the IP #'s are off something is way wrong. I've yet to find any kind of difinitive post on wiring a PS3 to a PC. There is so much contradictory info out there.

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

What device on your network is 192.168.1.10? All your machines are using this for DNS and the USB NIC is using it as a gateway....?

If you look through the tracelog on PS3MS (C:\program files\PS3 Media Server\debug.log is it seeing the PS3 at all or is it that the PS3 isn't seeing the PC from the XMB?

The fact that you can ping the PS3 from the PC shows your not far off; there is some comms happening

Re: Need Help PC to PS3 Crossover Cable

Good morning Uridium. I really appreciate your help here man. Maybe we can get this thing going.

"What device on your network is 192.168.1.10?"
I don't know really. I'm guessing it's the ISP router?
I haven't changed any number on the USB Wireless Adapter.
I have however made up all the numbers in the NIC and PS3 just as a reminder based on what people have suggested.

Here's the jist of what I get from Debug:
[Thread-8] DEBUG 23:52:19.890 Setting multicast network interface: name:eth2 (NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ) index: 8 addresses:
/169.254.175.56;
[Thread-8] INFO 23:52:19.891 Error while sending periodic alive message: The requested address is not valid in its context

I can't copy/paster from Traces tab, but it looks like the server is running fine, it says "It's ready!, You should see the appears on XMB"

Is it supposed to start the server on the NIC? It says:
Starting DNLA Server on 192.168.2.247 port 5005

If not what IP would I "Force IP of the Server" to start on?
The server is supposed to start on my PC right? Would that be the IP of my (a)Wireless USB Adapter or (b) the NIC to the PS3?

Yes the server should start on the PC wired NIC IP address. Try forcing that IP address in the force IP field. The fact it's reporting a 169.254 address shows it's not seeing the correct adapter and picking up the 192.168 address as it should (if you look at the debug.log file at c:\program files\PS3 Media Server this is the trace log in a file you can open in notepad).

Now your ISP setup is confusing me a little..... Is it like a shared wi-fi broadband service using a router located in the street or something or do you actually have an ISP provided router in the house?

I would persevere using Ps3 Media Server as it's the only app tht will give you some useful logging as to what's going on comms wise between the PS3 and the PC and as i said before the fact that you can ping the PS3 from the PC shows there is SOME comms happening.....

Have you posted over on the PS3 Media Server forum at all? I ask as that site is visited by some REAL tekheads..and i've seen some really really complicated network setups sorted over there...

Maybe worth a go...
