Windows 7 and PS3 Media Server

Trying to get PS3 Media Server to connect to my PS3, but it doesn't seem to be able to find it. I have added the exception to Windows Firewall and installed Java for it to work.

I even added UDP & TCP port 5001 as stated in one of the blogs, yet it still won't see my PS3

I have sharing setup with WMP12 and I can access files from my PS3 using that, but would rather use PS3 Media server, as it automatically updates the library with new files.

Any help appreciated, as I'm stuck

You need to add an exception for JavaWS and wrapper.exe as well.

If in doubt try disabling firewall completely and see if it works. (to be honest I'd disable it anyway )

If your behind a hardware firewall/router there's ittle point in it.

Re: Windows 7 and PS3 Media Server

I put Windows 7 on last Friday and had the same issues. The only way to get it to work was to turn off the firewall completely and force PS3MS onto port 80. However when streaming my PC stopped after 20 minutes and I had to do a power reset. I thought it may have been a glitch but retrying it once more the PC died again after 20 minutes. I was so frustrated after a long day of fiddling with Windows 7 that I went back to Vista - and everything is OK again.

Anyone any idea why my PC would die streaming through PS3MS after 20 minutes. It has always been rock solid with Vista, in fact it's never crashed once in the 6 months I've had it.

:EDIT: to say I'm using 1.10.51 of PS£MS and wondering if there maybe a compatability with that version and Windows 7, possibly even the build of TSmuxer or mencoder included?

Re: Windows 7 and PS3 Media Server

I've been using Win7 since the first Beta with all versions of PS3MS. Currently using latest beta of PS3MS on Win7 ultimate 32-Bit with no issues.

When installing PS3MS on Win7 make sure you install it by right clicking Install as Administrator and even more importantly right click Run as administrator the first time you run it to allow the Java update to run.

Port 80 is a really bad choice btw. That's an alternate port used by HTTP. i have had issues with port 5001 myself and found port 5005 works wel for me (dpends if you have any apps using that though)

Re: Windows 7 and PS3 Media Server

Thanks for the reply Uridium. I know that port 80 is a bad choice, but it was just something to get PS3MS working at all.

Why do I need to run as Administrator if the account I was logged on had Admin privilege. When I first ran PS3MS, Java installed OK.

When I get around to trying Win7 again (I'll dual boot next time to save the grief) I'll try the latest beta version of PS3MS instead. It's just that I had a vague recollection of TSMuxer (or was it mencoder) that was bundled with 1.10.51 having a memory leak/buffer problem.

I have to admit I was extremely surprised that my PC locked up like it did, I can't recall ever having an issue like that before. And remembering that it was a clean install of media server and win 7 too. With Vista everything is sweet again, not just with PS3MS, but with all apps and games. Very odd.

One thing I do recall though. When watching something the PC would lock up after 20 minutes of starting the file. If I paused playback, the lock up occurred 20 minutes after the pause, which is why I think it may be a memory leak problem.

Apologies to the op for going away from the original question btw.

Re: Windows 7 and PS3 Media Server

Admin accounts in Win7 like in Vista aren't 'real' admin accounts and still on occasion need elavated priviledges. It's similar to the Superuser/Root accounts in UNIX. You never log in as root but login as the superuser account and 'SU to root' to run programs as highest level admin.

I'd just seen issues in the past on Win7 beta's if PS3MS wasn't first run as an Admin. sounds like the gold version has maybe resolved this though now. I just ran as Admin first time on my Gold build out of habit after issues on the Beta's

Not seen the memory leak in MEncoder myself but saying that i rarely transcode now anyway (only if i need subs) I do know that the Mencoder binary is the same in 1.10.51 as in my current Beta (0.0.90)

Re: Windows 7 and PS3 Media Server

I have a similar issue, if I start PS3MS after a fresh reboot it usually finds the PS3 first time, however, if i've closed the app and turned off the PS3 then start the whole process again, it never seems to be able to find the PS3. The strange thing is though that streaming still works even in this state.

Any ideas? I've tried disableing windows firewall, not sure how to do any of the other stuff with my router though.

Runninf windows 7 home premium.

Thanks!

EDIT: may have found the problem, seems I had multiples instances of PS3MS running in the system tray that I hadn't noticed, just closed them all down, fired PS3MS up again and connected straight away.

Try using the "Install as a Service" option. This way the service always runs in the background and starts automatically with the PC.

Thanks mate, I think my problem was the multiple instances running but i've also done as you suggested as I will be using it an awful lot so it makes sense to have it run in the background.

Having come from trying to stream to a 360, my experience so far is a massive improvement!
