PS3 wont play a avi file

I have a PS3 Slim 120Gb, I have a video file that is .avi I ran it through GSpot video app identifier thing, and it says it is Xvid ISO MPEG-4 codec.

It wont play on my PS3 though. I have tried changing the extension to .mp4 but no good either, tried it on a USB, and via PS3 media server. I dont want PS3 Media server to transcode it either.

I know I could convert it to a PS3 format using an app, but this is long winded. Is there a quick way to be able to "trick" the PS3 to play it?

cheers

Yeah the quick way is to let media server transcode it, but you say you dont want to do that for some reason?

yeh its sometimes that I have my PSMS PC off thats all, and somethimes the PS3 is in the kids room for watching stuff.

i just thought there was something else you could do, eg run it through a script? to not actually convert it, but to recode it to a PS3 format?

****strange, I just put it on the USB stick, with the .AVi extension, and it now plays? but the same file wont play over PS3MS? says unsupported data? (not transcoding)****
