Playing .EVO files on PS3 Media Server

I can successfully play DVD ISO rips from DVD Fab just fine in PS3 Media Server using the hishest quality settings.

However I have a collection of HD DVD's that I have ripped as .EVO files using DVD Fab. Looking at the folders there is a long list of files with the main movie usually found under the name "feature1" or "feature 2". Every time I try to play one of these files the screen goes black and nothing happens and in some cases PS3 media server crashes even when i try the transcode option.

However when I play the small files like the movie trailer for example these play ok.

I have a completly wired setup using a dedicated Quad Core Media Server, so the hardware shouldn't be the problem.

Anyone know what the problem could be? Should I be converting these EVO files to a single MKV format and if so what is the best software to do this?

Are the smaller files in the same "EVO" format ?

Yep they are, some files were so large that I had to reformat my external FAT32 hard disk to NTFS.

I thought the fact that the files were stored on the external drive might be the problem, so I copied a movie onto the internal hard disk on the server and it still wouldn't play.
  1. So it's either settings in PS3MS that I need to change
  2. A bandwidth issue on the network
  3. An issue with playing this format on PS3MS
  4. Edit: PS3 firmware update?
  5. Or a combination of the above

Not having any HD-DVD's means i can't offer a lot of advice but personally I think your flogging a dead horse with the .EVO files. They seem to be pretty 'ripped HD-DVD' specific which would probably explain the lack of support in PS3MS.

I'd go with your 2nd thought of looking for a method of converting these to an MKV......

Looks a bit of a PITA to do though...http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125791

Yeah had a look at that and similar discussions and it does look like a real pain in the @rse with a range of applications to setup and install with no guarantee it'll work with every movie. I don't know if I can be bothered investing the time and headaches to get it all working.

Which is a shame since I have about 10 HD-DVD's and an Xbox HD-DVD player that I got to work on the PC (no longer have an Xbox 360).

Edit: Just found this site which will swap your HD-DVD's with the Blu-Ray equivilant, might give this a try now that I live in the US :-) http://red2blu.com/
