Thumbs up Hi, new to PS3 Gaming, Help please!

Hi, um, sorry about this, tbh I am unsure I am even in the right place, feel free to direct me to a more appropriate place if needs be.

I am brand new to PS3, I got my PS3 Slim and 2 bluray movies + remote a few days back, and have been enjoying various aspects of the PS3 so far.

Now, I am BRAND NEW to consoles (bar a PS1 many MANY years ago) so out of touch I am, I am a PC gamer but as I wanted a bluray player + UFC Undisputed, I thought well, ill give a PS3 a go.

So excuse me for being VERY clueless.

I have just got my first game (not Undisputed funnily enough) it is Uncharted 2 - I have a question about settings with this game, my PS3 is plugged in via quality HDMI to my Sony Bravia 40W5500 TV, I have the TV in Game mode, and have made my own personal adjustments to backlight/colour etc etc, I was suprised to see when I launched the game, 720p pop up.

Turns out after reading allot, it seems this is just the way games are. 720. (mostly)

So, my question is what should I be doing? leaving it in 720? or upscaling? I tried upscaling by unchecking 720 on my TV which seemed to force 1080, but it was not that hot, although it seems to remove SOME of the jaggies.

I am perhaps expecting too much? I mean I think Uncharted 2 looks GREAT and so far im enjoying it while trying to get used to a controller instead of mouse/keyboard of course

but tbh I am thinking perhaps I have just been spoiled with my PC? which due to being EXTREMELY high spec, I am used to 1680x1050 with AA etc etc

What I would really like to know is perhaps people who KNOW PS3 and HDTV, could advise me on what settings I should use for getting the best out of this game?

I would be VERY greatful for any advice, thanks.

Re: Hi, new to PS3 Gaming, Help please!

Hi. Welcome to the world of PS3

Leaving it on the settings you had before would be my advice. So leave 720p and 1080p both checked. This means that most games will output in 720p as designed, but anything that does support 1080p will be output accordingly. Personally I don't think forcing the PS3 to upscale it is worthwhile at all, but there are some people who do uncheck 720p to foce it to upscale. At the end of the day the resolution is NOT 1080p though, so whether it's teh PS3 or the TV, something has to upscale so I prefer to let the PS3 decide what is best for it and let the TV pick-up the slack

I guess coming from a high-end gaming PC the graphics may look like a step down but you're the first person (anywhere) I've heard complain about Uncharted 2 graphics . I do hope you've not been so spoiled with the PC that the PS3 just can't live up to expectations because most games wil be a step down from Uncharted TBH. But I think the PS3 has much more to offer in terms of convenience, versatility and importantly price (over a top-end PC) to forgive it. Personally I love my PS3 and wouldn't be without it. I hope in time you feel the same

Thanks a great deal for a good reply.

on my TV, in SCREEN, I have an option called DISPLAY AREA, I had to change that from auto, to +1, as it seemed it was zooming in slightly, I did this by pure accident, when I changed it to +1 things improved a bit, but I am sure I still have allot to get right before I am getting the best out of Uncharted 2 and my 40" Bravia 1080p TV.

The slight zooming on my W4000 was elimated by selecting full pixel mode. If the w5500 has that mode, its worth trying rather than using the +1 setting.

As others have said, I wouldn't set the TV to upscale a 720P picture to 1080P, Games that are designed to run in 720p, will look best at that resolution.

Off topic but if you have an 'EXTREMELY high spec' PC why are you running the random resolution of 1680x1050? Sounds like you need an 'EXTREMELY high spec' monitor to go with it.

I had no idea it was either RANDOM or needing an explanation.

Not much different from the 1280 x 720 output from the PS3? But if you do have a high end PC then obviously it's going to be better all round than the PS3. Every game I have played both on PC and PS3 always preforms better on my PC; but I only have a 21" monitor and an office chair in front of a desk, unlike my living room with a comfy sofa and a 42" TV to play them on. Both have 7.1 though

Arrogant much. Are all of your posts purely trolling.

Anyway to the OP, as great as uncharted looks all PS3 games suffer from jaggies to some extent and so depending on the spec of your PC the same game may look worse on the PS3. Turning off all picture enhancements on your TV can help if you haven't done so all ready. Once you play some more of Uncharted 2 you will forget about any differences anyway as it is such a good game. You should definately pick up the first game aswell once your finished the second as its almost as good.

Thanks for a good reply.

And I feel it is likely I am just used to higher res on smaller screen, moving to lower res on bigger screen without AA, I feel i was just expecting far too much, the game looks great.

Got Motorstorm: Pacific Rift today, enjoying that as well.

Very pleased I got a PS3 tbh.

And I don't much like the kid, but gday2uk has a point, I do enjoy the comfort of PS3 gaming above PC gaming.
