A good age to quit ??

Recently did Killzone 2 and its the first game Ive played to the end for a very very long time. I found it almost addictive. However once I'd spent some long nights online I found that once I'd achieved a certain rank I was just getting battered in every match. Some people on there were scoring hundreds of kills and I was happy to be in the lower double figures. So I got bored of shouting, Victor Meldrew style, at the TV and went back to the old faithful, Warhawk, which captured my attention for a few more nights. Then, once again, I was given a good kicking at the hands of no doubt much younger competition. I'm 44, my reflexes are not what they were. Dont get the idea that Im a decrepid old man, oh contraire, I just think maybe Im a bit to slow for this lark now. Add to the fact that I cant see anything on the shelves that even remotely interests me in terms of new games to buy.
Surely Im just getting old and should now be contenting myself with a copy of The Independant and a pipe?
Im in need of some hints, tips, cheats and some gaming inspiration. All advice gratefully received.

I'm 40 and as keen on gaming as ever, but I have never been remotely interested in 'competitive' multiplayer, such as Halo, CoD etc deathmatch games. They just demand too much investment of time to learn maps, play at set times etc which I just can't do. With my focus on single-player games I can play whenever I like, for as long as like (family etc permitting), and as such find it really enjoyable.

You just need to find the right games, but I personally find the industry is growing old (!) with us and doing a good job of supplying games that fit the bill. Currently enjoying/enjoyed Batman, DiRT2, NFS:Shift and looking forward to Halo ODST next week! Then FIFA, Uncharted etc. Great stuff coming up...

Re: A good age to quit ??

Maybe you could try different games?
I'm mid 30's & like you enjoy FPS's without being the best but I've started to broaden my horizons.
More recently I've played the music based games Rock Band Beatles/2 & Guitar Hero & found them great fun & they're not massively competitive. They're more of a challenge against yourself rather than anyone else.
I've also found that I enjoy the sports franchises of the good old days NBA/NHL/Tiger Woods/FIFA/PES. Online or against the CPU they're good fun.

You definitely shouldn't pack in. If FPS's are your thing & you keep getting "pwned" by the young 'uns you could always try to hook up with some older gamers on here...

Hello Victor Meldrew you can start by adding me as I'm just a bit younger than yourself and probably has the same reflexes as you, I believe a game is out in November called Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 which I've been told it's a must buy, so get that game and add me and me and you can play together online smoking our pipes whilst we rant rave

Re: A good age to quit ??

My eldest has just done Arkham Asylum and whilst I appreciated the graphics( it is after all a visual feast) and the style of the game, it wasnt my "cuppa tea". He thought it was brilliant, and is re-doing the easier level to get the trophies. Liked the first Uncharted but ditched it half way through, as I found it was all to samey. Ive also never been able to get excited about football games.
Bring back Duke Nukem !! Now that was a game ... such great graphics ....lol

My lads have this on pre-order. I will look out for you. I will probably be arthritic by then !! I know the COD games have a tendency of being a bit late.

I must add however, having played all the God Of War games previously that I am very much looking forward to the new one, but "God" only knows when it will be out.

You owe it to yourself to return to Uncharted. Definitely one of the most enjoyable, polished single-player gaming experiences I've ever had.

Okay mate feel free to add me but when you say COD games have a tendency of being a bit late are you meaning it might not be out on it's scheduled released date? New to gaming consoles and that is why I'm asking

Looks very slick, even some hint of a plot there, even if it is a bit Raiders Of the Lost Arc (ish) again.

Re: A good age to quit ??

I think he was refering to the first one - Uncharted: Drakes Fortune - excellent game, quite a bit of tearing but that didn't matter to me.

From what I've seen from playing the Uncharted 2 beta that will be even better

I now what you mean about the cannon fodder bit. My stats in Killzone regularly achieved a 10 to 1 ratio of deaths to kill.
Im assuming you were born in 1979 ? You are a mere babe in arms compared to the over 40's, such as me.

Re: A good age to quit ??

Perhaps look for games that dont demand the relfexes of teenager, twitch games such as COD4, KZ2 and Wahawk etc.

Im 36 like shooters but perfer the slower types like Rainbow 6 vegas as you get to think about your actions. Also, look up Deadspace, its dirt cheap now and is easily one of the summer sleeper hits but its a slow burner of a FPS. If you liked Aliens the film, youll love this.

Then theres every bodys golf, Wipe out, burnout paradise. Fun drop in and out of games that dont demand an awful lot from you in terms of time and reflexes.

LOL not game leader, in charge of organising games for KZ2.
Most of us don't play Killzone 2 any more, atm we're playing COD4, Uncharted 2 beta amongst others

I did give Dead Space a go a few months ago, as it was cheap. Couldnt get on with it. To much time spent wandering around like a loony, trying to find my way round. Although to its advantage it was quite scary and moody, older games such as Half Life and Area 51 I found were much better.

Re: A good age to quit ??

I'm 17 and I get beaten by people younger than me! It seems that all the people beating me on cod4 are the ones who shouldn't really be playing it due to their age! (I would say the same about KZ2...but I shouldn't be playing that...)

For the valuable milliseconds you could try getting a TV with super low input lag, that way the teenagers with the laggy Samsungs (and now Sonys) will be a smidge behind you!

From what I've seen from playing the Uncharted 2 beta that will be even better
I was referring to the 2nd game lol, think I will give the 1st game a miss and just get the 2nd instead

Surely Im just getting old and should now be contenting myself with a copy of The Independant and a pipe?
Im in need of some hints, tips, cheats and some gaming inspiration. All advice gratefully received.
Get a game that plays at a slower pace.
Operation flashpoint is coming out soon, lots of nice, quiet sniping

Im assuming you were born in 1979 ? You are a mere babe in arms compared to the over 40's, such as me.

certainly am bud..... i think my point though was that both young (me) and old (you) have similer problemms with games. I used to be in AVF clan but unfortuantly found it hard at the time to commit so i was hoofed out.... when playing though i was naff... people on killzone were getting 100 + kills and i would be getting 30

Still if you enjoy though just keep playing. like i say i was always good at taking the bullet and is deff better to be battered by someone you play on a reguler basis than of that of a stranger.

just becasue you "more matured" does not mean that those younger are better as have quicker reflexes.... just not the case..... indeed cooperman who i have plyed has destroyed me loads.

keep on playing and join band of bros.... mint bunch!

Lots of good games have been mentioned already as single player alternatives.

Have you tried the likes of Fallout3 and Oblivion and other RPG type games?

Another game that may interest you is Demons Souls, but you would need to import it.

Re: A good age to quit ??

I'm 53 and still playing as much as ever. However, like you, my reflexes are definitely not what they used to be so online shoot-em-ups would be a kill-fest for my opponents.

Like a few other posters have mentioned, I play a lot of offline only but still play some sports games online (MLB 09, Madden, Everybodys Golf etc).

Pete, you're probably better off joining up with LMZF website or one similar, all run for more mature gamers with private games, they don't play public games with kids or idiots etc..

The thing is, they're all guys who only play as and when they can get online during the week or weekends so you're in good company, most of them are similar level of ability (due to time not age)!
