Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

I've finally bought a PS3 with the release of the Slim, mainly as a BR player, but also to pick up the PS exclusives that I've missed out on so far.

I'm looking forward to playing MGS4, infamous & Uncharted and a lot of the upcoming new releases when I find the time, but are there any other exclusives that have been released over the past couple of years that are really worth me tracking down?

- Are any of the PS shoot-em-up's really worth a pop? From what I've seen they look very "generic space marine" fare, which puts me in very familiar territory as I'd label the same criticism at the 360's shooters, which left me unimpressed and I don't have so much time to game these days so trying to be more selective.

Is Killzone 2 any different, I've read many reviews that really really rave about the game, but I've seen similar for Halo 3 and I just don't get it. Is it more COD: Modern Warfare with an interesting single player campaign or Halo 3 with a bland, repetitive singleplayer tacted on to what is essentially an online multiplayer shooter?

I like to play more traditional games with set goals to achieve, a decent difficulty curve, and a story to follow/discover as the game progresses. Even in racing games; the ones I've enjoyed the most are the ones that have included a well thought-out career mode.

the characters are fun and the script is very enjoyable. It looks stunning in HD (pixar like graphics).

The game play is very easy to pick up with some taxing puzzles along the way, But the best thing about R&C are the weapons

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

Killzone 2 has a really good single player campaign, well worth playing I reckon.

Several people I know rate the single player far higher than the multiplayer side, plus it has some of the best visuals you'll see on a console so far, even though they do tend to be on the drab side.

Don't write off LBP, the production values and high quality of graphics and sounds really set it apart. You don't need to make levels, there are thousands of them available online and a large percentage of them are extremely well thought out and challenging.

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

I have to second the LBP recommendation- it is very fun and there are some levels which are challenging, I'm talking about you "Ace the Bunker"

It has a great community who have created some really fun levels to keep it going.

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

I'd definitely recommend that you give Killzone 2 a try. The control systems marks it out as different to other FPS titles. It took me a bit of time to get used to the heaviness that is inherent to the KZ2 control system but once I did I thought it was a very good single-player FPS.

Ratchet and Clank is a brilliant game that will hold your attention for hours at a time. I struggled to put it down at times.

I had a lot of fun playing Resistance 2. I alternated between KZ2 and Resistance 2 every day, preferring KZ2 if I wanted something dark and heavy, and then booting up Resistance 2 if I wanted a fun and exciting shooter.

I've not played Wipeout HD but I've heard some great things about it and it looks lovely too. I'm going to get it soon too.

Whatever you get I hope you enjoy your new PS3. It's a great system and piece of technology. Really pleased with what Sony have achieved with it. Also great to look at if you experience a power-cut

Cheers

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

I would rate the Resistance series over KZ2.

Also, would recommend importing Demons Souls from HK or placing a pre-order for the US version. Seriously, one of the best games for the PS3, game of the year contender IMO (not that it will be released here).

Also worth mentioning is Valkeria Chronicles, an absolutely gorgeous turn based strategy game.

Should have been more of a hit but has kind of become a cult classic.

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

Alongside the ones you have mentioned (MGS/Uncharted etc), definites in my opinion would be Ratchet & Clank and LBP (even if you aren't into the creation side, which I wasn't). Wipeout HD is a cracking wee game if you like racing games, not hard to pick up, but very difficult to master.

Resistance (both) and Killzone 2 are also cracking games and definitely worth trying if you normally enjoy FPS games. I preferred the feel of Resistance over KZ2 on first pickup, but you do get used to KZ2 after a short while.

There are also some nifty little PSN store games that are definitely worth playing. I enjoyed Super Stardust HD and Shatter, though you'd be better hunting around, people rave about some others I can't recall.

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

Thanks all, you've persuaded me to at least give LBP a go despite my first impressions of the title.

I really like what I've seen of the PS3 so far, I prefer the cleanliness of the XMB interface over the 360's clucky advert-filled screens, and as far as build quality goes there's just no comparison. Although not as quiet as I hoped it'd be -- it's far from silent -- it's still a hell of a lot quieter than my 360, and produces a lot less heat after a long play session.

Sadly I have to put it away 'til Christmas now that I've "tested that it works" -- under strict instructions from she who must be obeyed

I think I'm going to need to book some serious time off over Christmas this year because when Christmas day rolls around I'm going to have Ratchet & Clank, InFamous, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid IV, God of War Collection (really loving that all the games are multi-region), and Uncharted to play through now.

I've never played the PS2 God of Wars because I got rid of my PS2 before the trade in prices went through the floor -- I had a pre-order in for a PS3 (which at the time was going to be 100% happy to play all my PS2 and PS1 games) and planned to catch up on all the games I was missing out on when I got the new machine. Then Sony delayed the EU launch not once, not twice, but three times and in protest I cancelled my pre-order. I never imagined it would take me this long to finally buy one, and of course I can't even use it to play those PS2 title I missed out on anyway now

Just been looking at the thread for that here and various online videos for the game. Looks amazing, a definite purchase!

Also a very good game quite difficult to pick up if you can another must buy game.
The rest LBP is a good game only for the fact that there is no other game like it,Ratchet and clank(the new one is being released this year also)is another game that is sadly missing on the 360,with regards to shooters KZ2 resistance series both very good games but nothing you havent already played.
Its just for me starting to come to fruition the ps3 Heavy Rain GOW3 Ratchet and clank looks like its going to be a good time to be a gamer.

Other than that nice to see you back David

Re: Non-obvious PS3 exclusive recommendations

Recently came from an Xbox 360..

After looking through this whole thread and the games in question, I would only think of getting Demons Souls and LBP (due to the fact it looks funny)
At this point I am really missing Gears of War..

Think it is time to get an Xbox 360 again and have both.

Really like GT5P and F1:CE though

Another vote for Everybodys Golf World Tour and one for MLB 09: The Show. The best sport sim I've played (until the new NHL comes out on Friday at least!).

Ive got this bluray player at home..... and ive been told i can play games on it! ;)

alright there folks,

Ive had a PS3 since launch day and to be honest ive never really used it as a games console that much.... mainly because i prefer the 360.

....actually thats a tad harsh - but i prefer the 360 pad and most of the people i know have a 360 and live and therefore its the console i use most. This has unfortunatley left the ps3 in the bluray player / singstar machine hotseat.

Now, as ive been hit again by the RROD on the 360 (my 5th 360 and 2nd ps3 now ) im looking to get a few games in on the ps3 to keep me going.

Im looking for exclusives only - id consider multiplatform only if there is a significant improvment on the 360 version. But tbh 99% of the multiplatform games im interested in i already own on eithier my 360 or the wii.

Games i currently own on the PS3 are drakes fortune, MGS 4, LBP, Resistance 1 and 2, motorstorm, ratchet and clank and Siren Bloodcurse.

Now - i havent actually looked at PS3 exclusives for some time - not since pre killzone.... so my question is:

Has anything decent been released since then?

Eithier on the PSN or via standard retail? Im gagging for something new to play and i want to start using the ps3 more.... if you can play without the need for six axis controls then all the better as ive just bought one of those crossfire units.

thanks
