PS3 Trophies - How They Work
I know most people are aware of the PS3 trophies, but I thought I'd write a short guide on how they work, what the values are and what you need to do to achieve a higher level.
The trophy system was introduced back in July 2008 with the 2.40 firmware update. It was introduced to reward the gamer for certain achievements within a game, i.e, reaching a certain level, killing so many monsters/objects, setting a fastest time, or just completing the game. It follows a similar path to the Xbox achievments.
After the update, a 'Trophy Collection' section appeared under the 'Game' section of the XMB.
In there, data of any games that have trophies and that have been played by you and trophies acquired will show up as a percentage.
Clicking on each title will then lead to another screen that will show you which trophies have been acquired for that game, it will give you a brief description on what the achivement was for the trophy and the date and time that trophy was acquired.
Obviously, some older PS3 games won't have trophies and many games have had patches release to now include trophies. It has been mandatory since January 2009 that all games released have trophies, even most PSN games now have trophies.
Not all games are alike though when it comes to levels of difficulty when obtaining trophies. Games like Killzone 2 and Street Fighter IV set the benchmark very high when trying to get 100% and a Platinum trophy, whereas, recent games like Hannah Montana and Terminator Slavation are quite easy to complete.
Also, as part of the update, you can now compare your trophy haul with current friends in the XMB.
You can also link your trophy list/tag as a signature within forums.
To do this, register your PSN account at
Official PlayStation website.
The trophies themselves are broken down into 4 levels; Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Achieving each reward will vary from game to game, with a Platinum trophy being awarded for completing the game and obtaining all other trophies available within that game.
To know what level you're at and what the value of each trophy is worth, below is a table setting out what point scores are required to reach the next level;
| ----TROPHY---- | ----POINT VALUE---- |
| Bronze | 15 |
| Silver | 30 |
| Gold | 90 |
| Platinum | 180 |
| ----LEVEL ---- | POINTS REQUIRED |
| Level 1 | 0 |
| Level 2 | 210 |
| Level 3 | 600 |
| Level 4 | 1,200 |
| Level 5 | 2,400 |
| Level 6 | 4,000 |
| Level 7 | 6,000 |
| Level 8 | 8,000 |
| Level 9 | 10,000 |
| Level 10 | 12,000 |
| Level 11 | 14,000 |
| Level 12 | 16,000 |
| Level 13 | 24,000 |
| Level 14 | 32,000 |
| Level 15 | 40,000 |
| Level 16 | 48,000 |
| Level 17 | 56,000 |
| Level 18 | 64,000 |
As you play each game, you'll see a percentage of completion next to the game title within the trophy list on the XMB. Each game will have a different number of trophies to acquire, so there's no rule of thumb to say how much each trophy for that game will be worth. However, I guess you could work it out with some complicated maths what the percentage increments would be, when a silver trophy is worth 2 bronze trophies, yet a gold is worth 6 bronze trophies with the platinum being 12 times the value of a bronze trophy.
There is also another thread started that is being run for people to show off their trophy haul and be listed in a leaderboard.
