re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

I thought about only giving it a 9 because as we all know, NO game is perfect as there is always something that could have been done better. However when you weigh up everything that's good about this game (ie everything) against what's bad (? no replays ?? and then i'm struggling to think of anything else)

You can really tell it was a labour of love too. Then you factor in the price and it's a no brainer for me. After playing it to death now I can safely say, the best game on the ps3..............at the moment.

I would have given it a 9/10 if it was £30+, so considering the price it's a 10 from me.

re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

Taking the price out of the equation (as we all know its a bargain at £12) Id have to go with 9. Its visually stunning, sense of speed is exhilarating (theres nothing more satisfying that a flat out perfect lap). The ability to use custom playlists is a fantastic addition. My main critiscism is the lack of tracks, but bringing price back into the equation for a second, its a fair-enough number for the price. Also future DLC may make that critiscism obsolete. The online mode is very robust considering most new games with online play tend to be unreliable in the first few weeks due to demand and poorly planned server allocation.

Definately the best investment I have made in a game since getting my PS3, in terms of price paid and the amount of time this thing is going to sap up.

All this for just 12 quid = 10/10 simple.

re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

I have to go along with other people here. For £12 this game has to be the best value gaming experience ever.

Fantastically smooth graphics, wonderful sound, great lag-free online play...

If it was full price, I'd say 8 or 9, but I have to take the price into consideration... so...

...you know what's coming: 10/10

similar frame of mind with the rest , near perfect game what pushes it to 10 for me is the fact it just brings back playing wipeout the first time it came out and this has an almost identical feeling to playing the original . tbh it has been missing from a lot of games this gen but for £12 quid its like going back a decade to golden age of playing a console and losing a few hours

I utterly adore it. In fact I reviewed it for a small gaming site and yes, you guessed it, gave it 10/10. You can have a gander here but by the sound of things I'm preaching to the converted

re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

if Torvill and dean got straight 6's for prancing around on skates all those years ago then this game gets a 10 from me today.

I knew it was gona be good but not THAT good.

I bought a PS3 to play it so that about sums it up really.

For £12 notes , mindboggling graphics , great 5.1 sound, full 1080p and 60 fps , sublime gameplay, great online play and a real challenge with that undefinable ONE MORE GO quality how can it score less than 10?

best game i have played in AGES.

If it had replays and a water bit it would get 11!

re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

This game is the main reason I purchased a PS3 over a year ago and I have been patiently waiting for it since. I'm not very good at it (surprise surprise), but it evokes the fun of all of the hours playing Wipeout 2097 but this time in 1080p on my 42inch full HD plasma and with 5.1 soundtracks booming out. The ability to play your music on the HDD is excellent and whilst I agree with those who says its roots lie in wonderful dance music like Orbital, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Leftfield etc, the results of playlists filled with nu-metal and thrash metal are pretty cool too. The sense of speed is amazing and that buttock clenching tension as you go into the last lap leading a race, dreading you're going to clip a wall and lose the lead. For me it is everything a game should be, fun, challenging, frustrating, rewarding and difficult/impossible to put down.

Although my head tells me nothing is perfect, its 10/10 for me.

re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

This game / series was one of the only temptations in buying a PS3 many months ago to sit alongside my 360. i absolutely loved the PS1 games, and although it went a bit stale on the PS2, the PSP reignited the interest.

This as a product is near flawless. As detailed above, the graphics, sound, experience, speed, palm sweating tension, rock solid framerate, perfect online performance... etc etc.

Even at full price we would all be raving about it, and for me it would be a 10, but at £12, it represents ludicrous value for money, and from Sony, that's saying something!

fantastic game. 9/10 no doubt. Wouldve preferred a straight forward league based main game (like the original) as i much prefer racing opponents. I can easily gold medal most traditional races and tournaments as speed as well as judicious use of power ups play a big part in em but speed laps and time trials can be frustratingly hard. ahh my reflexes just arent as good as they used to be.

For £12 it puts so many full priced games to shame with it's super slick graphics, thumping soundtrack, and superb online play.

Buy it now 10/10

i nearly gave it an 8 as i think it is a little lacking in areas and then i remembered it barely scratched my wallet and so i've marked it according to VFM and it gets a 9

re: Wipeout HD PS3 Reviews

I really wanted to like this but its a 4. Below average....

I had a copy of wipeout on the PS1 (cant remember which one) and it was 50p from game as it had no proper box etc....and this is exactly the same but in HD.

The cheesy dance tunes just sound dated instead of futuristic now and the handling seems to have got worse - more twitchy. Online is a decent extra but even for £12 its just not that great, I thought there'd be more to this game after so many years......

Time has moved on and this 'futuristic' racer has been left in the past.

Sorry dan81 but your are incorrect, HD is based on the two PSP versions pure and pulse.

Fair enough you not liking this game as everyone has their own thoughts but to say it's the same as the ps1 version(s) is just silly. How far did you get out of interest and did you try out zone mode as that's something different from anything a ps1 could manage?

If you find the music "cheesy", try using your own playlists, from music on your PS3 HDD. Not sure what you mean about twitchy handling - feels pretty decent to me. I'm obviously not suggesting you "have" to like it, I'm just interested in why you feel that this does not represent good value for money.

No need to go overboard with the geek knowledge - I didnt mean literally the same!

The playlist thing - I'll give that a go. Some tracks were OK but some were truly worthy of a Ministry of Sound compilation.

Also am yet to try split screen 2 player, which seems to be missing from most race games now. I'll give it a bit longer but no, I don't really feel its worth £11.99. Sorry for disagreeing folks!

You're obviously entitled to your opinion Dan and nothing wrong with disagreeing.

However i always felt that this game is more on the 'peaceful' side rather than the 'aggressive' one. As such the Ministry of Sound type of music suits it and its futuristic feel better. I sort of cant imagine playing this game with Kaiserchiefs music in the background.

Complaining about the price though is a bit harsh.

If you didn't mean literally then same then why post "this is exactly the same but in HD"

Anyways, each to there own Dan, you don't have to like it mate, far from it, it was just the comment re PS1 game that got me posting it the first place because it really is nothing like the PS1 versions.

Take it easy, Chris

It needs electronic music but surely they could have sourced something more cutting edge than Cheese Anthems 2007. Just doesnt seem futuristic to me.

I think you might be over analysing my comments! To me I could sit and play the PS1 or PS3 versions and it wouldnt make much difference to me...its just a hover-thingy racing around a track with other hover-thingies!

The backdrops, vehicles, the layout of the menus etc all look like a 1990's vision of the future. It all looks a bit dated to me.

Well it gets a resounding 9/10 from myself. The only things that I find a little disappointing with the game are some of the poor quality textures. They've kept the polygon levels down, to keep the frame-rate up. The game looks fantastic when in motion, but if you ever take a moment to look more closely at the buildings and structures the low quality textures and models are quite obvious.

I do realise that's the price we pay to ensure the games rock-solid frame rate, but I can't help but feel it's a shame. This game could have been even better, albeit only slightly. Worth twelve pounds of anyone's money.

Cheese hits? I'd hardly see the likes of Kraftwerk, Ed Rush, Stanton Warriors, Aphex Twin, Noisia and Booka Shade being headline chart dance acts. The track selection is actually remarkably on the button. Aphex sounds as futuristic as ever and Booka Shade have been flying high on Get Physical Music as part of the minimal scene. Just sift through something like Resident Advisor and you'll see that the minimal scene is about as on the button as you can get.

There are only a handful of tracks there but the selection is current. Of course I'm finding myself adding even more from their respective scenes in there thanks to the custom soundtrack. I live this scene and was impressed with some of the names that were cropping up for the soundtrack.

Standing up for the selection, accusing the taste of being off the boil and living in the past is so far wide of the mark.

What were you expecting? Its a racing game based around high speed hoverships. Thats a bit like buying Mario Kart to pour scorn on it for being some sort of colourful kart racing game where you fire objects at each other.
