Uncharted:Drake's Fortune PS3 Reviews

Please! As a courtesy to others; avoid posting any spoilers in your reviews.

A 10 should only be given for a landmark game that sets new rules, a 9 for a truly excellent game without flaw, and an average game that does things right but nothing special should get a 5 (not a 7 or 8 like some would have you believe).

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Excellent game. Flaws are very minor and what it does well it does very well.

Technically this is probably the best PS3 game out yet, Heavenly Sword has better facial animations and arguably acting, and i cant think of any other games that beat the graphics, sound and integration of both to the players experience.

As as story-driven game it works well, and yes this means its fairly linear, and it involves you and the characters are all entertaining.

Gameplay merges a bunch of games like Prince of Persia/Tomb Raider for platforming, and Kill.Switch/Gears of War cover shooting, with a bit of beat em up thrown in too. Vehicle sections which are actually FUN to play, and the jeep is really quite a rush if youve got the surround sound turned up.

Really is worth a look by any PS3 owner.

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Brilliant game - I give it a 9.

Out of this world visuals, I keep stopping to just look around (mainly at sunsets).

Its just fun, the shooting- whilst the weakest part- is still pretty good and the platforming elements are superb.

Throw in likeable characters, a ridiculous but entertaining story and the reward system and you have one of my favourite games of the year

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

A very good game which improves as it goes. Some very minor niggles with the controls and the combat is a little bit weak, but the story is great, the characters involving and it's a lot of fun to play. Graphically it's definitely one of the best looking games this generation with superb animation, lighting and detail (both in the characters and the environments). The only thing that lets the visuals down are the pathetic explosions!

Overall - Excellent 9/10 .

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

9/10 Excellent game.

I bought a PS3 for xmas with this, COD4, Motorstorm, Skate. I opened it early on Saturday as I dont get much time off work!
Apart from a few hours on motorstorm and some multiplayer COD4, I have been playing this all the time. I have completed on normal and am 65% of the way through on hard.
Frankly it took a couple of hours to get used to the shooting control system but now I really enjoy the gunfights. The moving around the cover, trying not to get outflanked and popping up for headshots is great.
The graphics are outstanding: the water is the best I have seen in a game and the frame never drops despite detailed plants blowing in the wind with real time shadows.
And credit should be given to the jumping system which is really easy and therefore avoids the usual frustration.
In the same vein, the lack of health is great because it avoids the problem of saving late in the game with not enough health to stay alive!
Anyway, very good game, took about 10 hrs first time through and will get about 20 hrs total, so no complaints on the longevity from me.
And gthe engine is so good the sequel should be awesome: with twice the length being presumably quite easy now the engine is in place.

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Yup, agree with what everyone else has said already.

Just a great game. It takes the best bits from Kill.Switch/Gears of War and Tomb Raider and wraps them up in a more engaging story.

It's less combat-orientated than Gears, yet when you are in a firefight it works just as well. And likewise the platform bits aren't quite as demanding as Tomb Radier, but they're equally entertaining. Scaling giant vertigo-inducing cliffside ruins might not represent much of a challenge, but it's still great fun (and it's more of a challenge than Assassin's Creed which lets you press UP and does the rest for you...boring!).

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

8/10 for me.

Only loses points for no multi-player - which if it had and it was like the single player would be an automatic 10/10. Refreshingly short and sweet without going over the same old ground when you fall - a particular gripe of mine for padding out the experience from other games...Oh yeah, also liked the 'hint' system - subtle but enough to keep you moving - if you choose to use it...

Or to put it another way - once completed, I immediately restarted the game on a higher difficulty. Great stuff.

I must say that I personally don't get this line of thought. It's a single player game so why expect there to be a multiplayer option? I personally hate the fact that a lot of games feel the need to cram in some form of multiplayer option, just to tick a box. I do feel a game should only be rated for what it is as by the above logic suggests that you can never have a single player game getting full marks.

I must say i agree with cas on this, it seems to be that a lot of people have started to score singleplayer games down because of a lack of multiplayer . surely a singleplayer experience is just that, singleplayer. Anyhow, 9 out of 10, a great experience and although there were a few niggles, the whole package was a pleasure to play, thouroghly enjoyable .

...Not one that only clocks in under 10 hours for my money it won't. Regardless how pretty it looks.

8 is a solid score anyhow - why does anything have to be either a 9 or 10 before it's decreed a success nowadays? Must be the Eidos effect...

Anyhow, I'm hardly Jeff Gertsmann. I won't be losing my job over my score.

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Looking through the play and help thread of this game it really just seems to be just total praise with the odd comment about how to position statues. I think for many, like myself this is what I liked about the game. I never got truly stuck. It was always enjoyable to play it, and to say I didn't get stuck is not a criticism by any means, just I think they hit the learning curve of the shooting spot on, and the gameplay itself is just the right difficulty and pace.

It really does feel like you are playing a movie. I loved the fact I wanted to watch every cut scene, never wanting to skip once. I genuinely enjoyed the game throughout and have instantly after seeing the credits roll, starting again on a higher difficulty. How many games can you say that about?

To those that have played the demo and are not totally convinced, please buy this game. I was the same and thought what was everyone raving about however I decided to take a chance due to feedback on here and I'm so glad i did. The game is so story driven, that playing chapter 4 on the demo really doesn't convey how great this game is. If they had featured a level with more jumping and showing of the edge of the island (cliffs and the ocean) then I'm sure the demo would have wowed everyone, showing not only the graphics off but the sheer enjoyment of the game.

As for no multiplayer? I too am fed up of games tacking it on. Just as with Bioshock, the developers said what would you rather, a great one player game, or an average single player and multiplayer? I don't think developers should feel the need to make a multiplayer element just to tick another box. If more time went into single player production, then maybe we would have more great games like Uncharted.

In short, this is one of my favourite games of the year. I hope many sequels follow, as this is what gaming needs in my opinion; games that are easy to pick up, hard to put down and just plain fun. Uncharted is a breath of fresh air and has actually made my PS3 become a games machine again, not just a blu-ray player. If you have a PS3 please don't overlook this gem of a game. They don't appear that often.

Craig

I think its one of the best single player adventure games i've played in a long time. In enjoyed much more than any of the tomb raider games, although it does obviously owe alot to that series of games

I was going to pick up a cheap preowned copy of Tomb Raider Anniversary at somepoint in January, but now after playing Uncharted I really don't know if I'll be very disappointed. I grew up with Tomb Raider and just remember how frustrating the aiming was and having to line Lara up and do a "perfect jump" just to reach the next ledge. Think I'll play through Uncharted again again and save my money. Tomb Raider Underworld sure now has to live up to a lot. Uncharted in my opinion has raised the bar significantly.

Yes, I also immediately restarted on "hard", and this was at midnight.
And this was with only just getting a PS3 and 3 other games including COD4.
In fact when I got round to COD4 even the arcade mode did not make me keen to replay the 1-player game.

To be fair, Anniversary does the whole platform/puzzle thing better than Uncharted IMO. The controls are actually very similar, yet the level design is much more demanding and therefore more rewarding. The combat is still a bit lacking, but it's well worth picking up if you can find it cheap enough.

Cheers mate, I'll check it out still. Think I saw the 360 version in the 2 for £30 preowned section at Gamestation the other day.

TRA is £14.99 in the Play sale, brand new. I ordered it myself!!

As for Uncharted, i've given it a 7.

I think the game is pretty good, but nothing more, and certainly not as amazing as some people seem to think. I think anyone giving the game a 10 must be wearing PS3 tinted specs and have simply been crying out for so long for a decent exclusive that they are getting carried away with the hype. It's good, but not that good.

For me it was a decent game to play, and yes the story is a strong point, keeping you interested. The elements it's "borrowed" from others are not entirely successful imo. The shootouts are poor and tedious at times with the enemy AI and animations somewhat dubious. Especially bizarre when you managed to solve certain secrets to access an area or hidden place, only to be confronted by 10 enemies when you're in there....??

I think the Hint system kicks in too quickly giving away paths to take before you;ve had a chance to get lost and the jumping is very striaghtforward. Sure it can look nice when the camera pans to a wider view, but only in a couple of places was there ever a challenge to it...

The graphics are very good, but not the best ever as some want to believe. For me Assassins creed and COD4 among the recent release are superior, but i have only got these on the 360 so can't vouch for PS3 versions, but i gather they are almost identical. Oh and the water effects in Bioshock are better. It's irrelevant really though as Uncharted does look very nice and is right up there in the looks department...

Overall, it's decent, but lacks a serious challenge and failed to lure me in as it had nothing unique about it, having taken all it's tricks from other games, which i'd seen before, and the gameplay was a bit repetitive.

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Was chatting to a mate who works in the industry about this game. He loves it too, but Uncharted has apparently become a bit of an industry joke - it has sold sod all copies, so the fact it is called 'Uncharted' is beyond ironic. Why is it that mass produced crap like Need for Speed or the Harry Potter games are the ones that sell millions, but truly great games like this are not popular? Makes me mad.

I really hope this was succesful enough to get a sequel though, I thought it was the 2nd best game of 2007 (behind Bioshock)

It's often the case with new franchises. All the kids know about FIFA, Need for Speed, PES, Ratchet & Clank etc. so they get snapped up. A game like Uncharted has no history and nothing to really draw gamers to it. The demo was pretty poor as well IMO and nearly put me off the game, so I guess that will not have helped.

This is the reason wy software houses just churn out annual updates to their franchises. They know that it's the name (not so much the game) that sells, so the likes of EA can practically forecast next years FIFA sales already!

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Technically head and shoulders above any other console game, and plus a great game to play, with good story telling (but then you always get that from Naughty Dog). A few minor niggles now and then, but nothing to really complain about and the only part I have found disappointing is the jetski section.

Anyone who doubts the PS3, should sit down for an hour and play this. And another great thing about it, is that the next Naughty Dog game should be even better!

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

This for me has been Game of the Year on the PS3 - for the entire length of the game I was utterly entertained. The graphics are nothing short of stunning with a fantastic sense of art direction and the score is incredibly cinematic and fits perfectly. This game feels like an interactive movie and is very well paced and directed throughout.

Ok it may not be the most innovative game in the world but why does it have to be? As long as it plas superbly I couldn't care less about originality. You could argue that Wii Sports is very innovative but it isn't necessarily fun to play (in my opinon). I really hope that Naughty Dog create a sequel to this, it is a crying shame that gems such as this get passed by whilst dross such as Need for Speed shoots straight to the top. This game should be heavily advertised by Sony and slapped together in a bundle as it is currently the best exclusive they have.

An effortless 9 for me and hands down the most entertaining game on the PS3 to date.

Agree with the above post. Absolutely loved it - fantastic graphics and loved the story too.

I have also read that it has sold a lot more than the internet 'figures' people are saying.

Not sure if it is my best game of 2007, but it is bloody close.

A 9 from me

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

I gave it a 9, I had this, Assasins Creed and COD4 for christmas and this for me is the best of the three.

As for assasins creed looking better, I dont see that myself.

Loving this game.

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

think this could be my first PS3 purchase, so far i have BD only.

the genere defining trophy may be a great one but its not really how a game becomes a true great, it wont recieve as many plaudits but true gamers know a good experience when they feel one.

also surley this is a game that defined a genre ?

but even though you do esencially the same thing with this game..

then eventually we will have this in 100years time perhaps..

again esencially the same... but the experience becomes even more involving and exciting to play and perhaps with women tennis 7 on playstation 23 even arousing

all the same game, ball across boundry and back getting more advanced etc..just updated GFX and Sounds

I dont think we can get bored of the same formula until the original formula has been perfected

^ you can quote me on that

Why is it that mass produced crap like Need for Speed or the Harry Potter games are the ones that sell millions, but truly great games like this are not popular? Makes me mad.

I really hope this was succesful enough to get a sequel though, I thought it was the 2nd best game of 2007 (behind Bioshock)
Lets face it they didn't do themselves any favours with the name did they?

I wonder if they used the same marketing guys as they did for the 2012 olympic logo.

Maybe they should have made the lead character female with big breasts and called her Laura, its worked before Laura's Fortunes, box cover with suitably scantily dressed lead heroine toting a large gun, would have sold double, sad but true

It is confusing though, why spend years developing a truely great game and then messing up the title?

As for the demo, why didn't they release something that gave a little peak at more than one setting, some of the graphics and lighting effects in the caves are fantastic and would definitely have sold more copies

Re: Review - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Sorry, but how has the games title stopped it from selling copies? What is wrong with the title?
