Re: Virtua Tennis 3 : Review

this is a great multiplayer game, with the mini games adding to alot of fun

single player is good at first but i feel it gets quite stale as the game goes on

I do love this game. Great player & shot aminations, almost livelike, great multiplayer, but only limited appeal single player.

Going to give it an 8 - The best game of tennis you can get.

Would have gotten higher if there was an online mode.

Hopefully the next incarnation will have online capabilities.

Virtua Tennis 3: 6/10

Best and only Tennis game on the PS3, but still can't give it more than 6/10.

Plus points are the graphics (1080P compatible) and life like movements of players, sound effects are also rather good.

On the rather hefty down side, no online play (probably has cost it 2 points for me, would have given it 8/10 if it was included ), 1 player tour mode is extremely repetative and climbing through the ranks doesn't give much satisfaction because as the opposition get better so do you, meaning the game doesn't really change. Decent 2 player game, but soon loses its appeal when nearly every shot played is a dive to rescue the point (as world tour mode becomes against the top 5 players in the world!). Also, you play the likes of Federer etc. whilst you're ranked 300 and he's rubbish, whilst playing him at the top level, he's suddenly pretty good!?

Only kept the game to complete world tour mode, after that the longevity strats to wane. Without on-line, not really a game to go back to. Only played Topspin 2 on the XBox 360 for an hour, but felt that had a better and more realistic game engine to it than VT3.

Like this game a lot, although agree with the comments about the career mode.

Think it would be brilliant also if they could make a tennis game where other than hitting the ball in a said direction, you actually have to choose the power and more of the direction, so you hit shots long, and wide and into the net naturally.

As on virtua tennis, it must be a world record for least amount of shots hitting the net in a grand slam tournament.

Re: Virtua Tennis 3 : Review

I gave this a 7. I am perfectly happy with it, but I can't give it more as I owned Virtua Tennis 2 (that's about 5 years ago?) and frankly they are exactly the same apart from the graphics. I still enjoy it a lot, and have reach no.1 ranking and am building up my player for the matches vs. King and Duke. But even the 1 player world tour is exactly the same as in VT2.

The plusses: great fun and easy to pick up for friends in multiplayer games. good graphics. 1 player mode that lasts ~15 hrs even if it is flawed.

The minusses:
Same flaws as last time, namely:

unrealistic play:
(i) Serving isn't difficult to put in the corner with max power: but even then you rarely get an ace or unreturned serve. They really need to make increase risk of fault and reward of ace.
(ii) Some vollyeing is pathetically weak even if you have timed it well. Backhand volleys are way better than forhand ones.
(iii) Similar to the serving, your shots never go out. There really should be more errors.
(iv) The players always make outrageous returns: i.e. when they should have never got to the ball let alone put it back in play.

flawed 1 player career:
(i) too many torunaments with too few rounds/ games. They really should have fewer tournaments but with more rounds so that you can play a proper grandslam-type tournament once in a while.
(ii) fatigue/rest/energy drink: pointless (why make it arcadey and then do this mess?)
(iii) playing the same pros over and over again but on different difficulty levels: they should just have randomly created players for the lower ranking games.

So overall, good game. You have long rallys rather than winners, which is totally unrealistic but nevertheless good fun.
They really should have progressed the game in the last 5 years though! Shoddy release really, even if I am grateful for it!
