Re: Colin McRae Dirt : Review

Having played the demo of this I thought "pretty useless". Then I won a Three Speech competition and got a freebie copy. Really enjoy it actually, it's good honest fun. The graphics are good, the frame rate is spot on, the sound is ok too. The only let down's for me are:

1.) When the exhausts spit it's really blocky
2.) I noticed some issues on the Japanese Super Special Stage, where it's a bit jerky.
3.) The co-driver calls the turns out too late to react sometimes.
4.) The menu's are too slow, when you win a race you want to get on and do the next one, not wait for the little flashy graphics to show you how much cash you've won etc.

Having played pretty much ever Colin McRae out there I think this is a fine addition to the series.

8/10 from me.

Re: Colin McRae Dirt : Review

Quality game.

In my opinion it's by far superior to Sega Rally and an extremely playable driving game.

In saying that I did complete the game in around 7 hours, but there is plenty of life left in it with online play and trying to better times around the tracks.

Highly recommended 8 out of 10

Re: Colin McRae Dirt : Review

I found these reviews (which metacritic takes into account) most interesting:

360 Review: http://xbox.boomtown.net/en_uk/artic...w.php?id=14259
PS3 Review: http://ps2.boomtown.net/en_uk/articl...w.php?id=14966

I'm left wondering why the PS3 version got the lower score? It's got better sound (as codemasters mentioned) and graphically it's better too (virtually no problems with it at all in that area!)?

PS3:
Graphics:9
Durability:7
Sound:6
Gameplay:6
Overall rating:6

360:
Graphics:8
Durability:7
Sound:6
Gameplay:6
Overall rating:7

??? I can only presume the reviewer is what some people would call a 'Fanboy'. It's a bit disappointing to see a worse version of the game score higher!

The overall scores given by most reviewers are not an average of the individual scores they give. More often then not they take into account other aspects of the game which don't fall into those categories. Just because the PS3 version got one point higher then the 360 in the graphics categorie doesn't necessarily make it a better game. I'm not saying it isn't as I've not played either version extensively but simply pointing out there is more to final review scores then you seem to think.

Re: Colin McRae Dirt : Review

Also I wonder if different reviewers have different scales. Or the fact that by the time the PS3 game comes around, there is less wow factor for the reviewer going through the game....

Re: Colin McRae Dirt : Review

It's the same reviewer who did both. His justification for picking the version with poorer sound and frame rate drops is that he prefers the controller on the 360. The PS3 controller is far superior to the 360's for Pro Evo, but the 360 version is the better game and scores reflect that, I've not seen anyone suggest buying the PS3 version over that of the 360.

This is a prime example of a game which has being ported over and made superior, yet this review doesn't reflect that at all.

I'd tend to agree that once games are out the reviews on platforms they reach there after aren't as glowing, as the wow factor does indeed subside, although I'd hope reviewers were mature enough to see past that and look for something a bit deeper.

Poor show really, having played both versions their is only one to buy and it's not on the 360.

Re: Colin McRae Dirt : Review

At the end of the day reviews are just opinions and not fact. There is no right or wrong regards reviews as they are a personal thing. Criticizing him because he gave the 360 version a better score overall because he prefers the controller seems harsh to me. He is entitled to his opinions.

Re: Colin McRae:Dirt PS3 Reviews

9/10. Great game as you can never get stuck and it's better than the 360 version, yay!

Re: Colin McRae:Dirt PS3 Reviews

Not the best to look at by a long way but if you want a rally game which leaves your heart racing, palms sweating and a the biggest grin then this has to be bought!

Well not sure about the controller but logitech pro wheel and pedals defo does the above.

Re: Colin McRae:Dirt PS3 Reviews

Hey just bought this today - well got it for a trade in - and I was wondering if the game was ever patched or received an update from Codemasters.

Anticipating that I would have to download an update for the game before I got the chance to play it I booted it up and waited for the usual screen you see when a game on the PS3 is due an update/patch.

However this didn't happen and it just booted straight into the game??? I've searched on Google, but it's difficult to find out if there has been a patch owing to the number of returns Google gives for Dirt 2. I use inverted commas to try and specify what I'm looking for but I still can't find a patch for the ps3 version of the game.

Has it been updated since it was released?

Thanks

ps I can find a patch (v1.22) for the PC version but not its equivalent for the PS3.

Don't think so mate. Why are you so bothered anyway lol? If it says update tehn do so, if it doesn't then leave it

Re: Colin McRae:Dirt PS3 Reviews

Thanks. Wanted to know whether it had or not as I'd read that some people found the Logitech G25 slightly incompatible with the game.

I wondered if Codemasters had released a patch that remedied those issues. It appears there is no patch but I've found settings that work well with my G25.

Compared to the demo of DiRT 2, however, DiRT does seem more difficult to control with the G25. In DiRT 2 the G25 allows very precise and excellent control over the cars.

Thanks
