I've just come away from my first full playthrough of the game on normal and feel able to give the game a good review.
Firstly, I really enjoyed Drakes Fortune and felt that it was an excellent game despite a few flaws (mainly technical). One of my complaints with DF was that it kind of felt that you were progressing through a series of rooms (even when outside) and that the game area was divided up into a series of boxes for you to progress through. I rarely felt that I was in the midst of a vast jungle etc. and the feeling of scale was not conveyed that well.
That said, the acting and cut scenes were great, the action was fun and the story was pretty gripping. The controls and the climbing mechanic also worked well and if you ignored the tearing, the visuals were great!
Nearly 2 years on from that well received PS3 exclusive, we are now treated to the second installment...Among Thieves!
Straight away any DF veteran will feel straight at home and most likely find the 'tutorial' section pretty straight forward. From then on the player is treated to a game which expands on the original in pretty much every department possible. To get an idea, it's probably best to look at the main facets of the original and how this game improves on them.
Visuals
There's no denying that the first game was a nice looking game. The explosions were really poor however and the tearing did affect the experience a bit. The detail was great however and the characters were well animated. Some of the lighting, partical and water effects were well done and overall it was certainly one of the better looking PS3 titles back in the day.
Among Thieves on the other hand delivers a really remarkable experience when it comes to visuals. There's zero screen tearing, the frame rate remains smooth and constant, the textures are superbly detailed, the locations are often epic in the scale they portray, always giving a fantastic impression of the wider world surrounding the game world you are playing in. Gone is the feeling of being confined to virtual 'rooms' as you progress through a level as the freedom you have in the environment is now much greater.
The lighting is also nigh on perfect with some of the levels looking almost photo realistic in their nature. The animation, art style and direction of the visuals is as close to cinematic as a game has ever come and it really gives the feeling that you are involved in a huge hollywood blockbuster!
Overall this is probably the best looking game i've ever played and I found myself being constantly amazed by the quality of the visuals.
Gameplay
Just as the visuals took something that was already good and then just took it to the next level...the gameplay does exactly that as well. The overall control is smoother and more responsive so that you can jump between cover, quickly climb up walls, as well as run, jump and vault your way around the environments with ease.
The environments are more 'vertical' than before with the player often going up as much as going along the horizontal plane.
The combat seems better tuned as well, with more of the tightness of a quality FPS. The AI are also more challenging as well as they rush you and try to out flank you. Add in some really amazing set pieces and you have a really thrilling game which never lets up from start to finish.
I've only played 1 game of multiplayer so far, but the Deathmatch game I played was really good fun and I can see me spending quite some time playing it.
Overall this is certainly one of the best games i've played so far this generation, never mind this year.
