But after completing a few of those and then a Prince of Persia, was I really interested in Unchartered? Yeh I was, as I’m fed up with FPS’s to date. I’ve got bored of GTA titles are they’re all a bit the same, but give them their credit, they’re still reasonably clever and a good roam. Batman blew me away with some reasonably neat ideas and acceptable graphics. So, UC2 must be far better…
All I can pick up from the previous posts and mates feedback is how great the story is. Honestly, is that all its got, because I can rent far better DVD’s; far better. Graphics are nice, but hardly cutting edge; but having said that I admit lighting is on par with some of the better games; it’s certainly not poor, don’t get me wrong. I’m just looking for the ground breaking 10/10 that people give this.
[edit:: problem fixed, as both views can be flipped]The problems begin thus; quite simply I cannot get on with the controls.
2. Tombraider may well have been too easy to figure the puzzles etc, but at least they made sense. Ledges that were accessible were reasonably clear. UC1 and UC2 are not clear. One moment Drake can scale a vine and the next he refuses to climb the easiest of roots. This inability to climb stuff just leaves me with zero enthusiasm to go looking for hidden objects. Again Assassins creed may well be basic, but its logical; same can be said for Batman and GTA etc, but at least the unclimbable items are out of reach – purposely designed and made so that you know you cannot reach them. Uneven rocks at one moment can be climbed but not the next.
Fix those two problems and I’d easy give this a 9/10; the graphics are up with the majority of games and the sfx are brilliant and true 5.1. Yeh the game is highly linear, but I can live with that, it’s a story, I get it, but I almost feel like sitting back and letting someone else play and I just watch the story unfold.
Edit: Im finding the AI isn't all that great either; hiding behind crates when you're stood beside them - walk closer and they still hide, although you can easilyshoot them; lame. The the idea you crouch, yet they cannot shoot you, even though your head is poking up. Sneaking up on someone in 3rd person is actually quite tricky - made worse when you cannot rotate the view when close to buildings/walls etc; therefore making you guess wherether you're in view or not. This has been a common problem on the likes of Batman and Manhunt etc and its still not fixed here in UC2; the Manhunt colour modes of alert were crude, but makes sense and defines tehre is an issue with 3rd person; obviously MGS does it better, but I've never liked the colours of that game.
I’ll carry on playing it and hope it gets better, and hope someone can point me to where the controls can be inverted for one view only, so they match. Once Im done then I’ll give it a score, but currently its looking like a 7/10. |
I just finnished this game last night and in my life I havent completed too many games despite gaming since the 80s, 1 of the others is the prequel
I thought this must be a jealous 360 owner when I first read this, but some of the criticisms are valid, some less so, although I think they are more niggles than things that spoil the game. Agree with the illogicality of some of the puzzles being a slight downer, and the inconsistances in what Nate can do, 1 miniute he can climb something, next min he cant, thats because of the linear solutions to the puzzles but they could be more consistant or offer multiple solutions would be an improvement. Still it managed to remind me of the original Prince of Persia on the Amiga
I also agree that you could rate better movies, with better stories, Broken Sword was also a better story and told better, with more likable characters. It would b good if you could intract/chat to other charcters la Broken Sword. It would be nice to influence the story to but thats probably asking too much for a 3rd person climbing shooter. But this all misses the point that it makes you feel immersed and it gives the gameplay more meaning
Another criticism I have for 'Greatest Game Ever' is, for the best game ever, its not that much different from the prequel, is it?
Graphically I have to disagree, never seen better on a console, beautiful at times
In terms of a shooter, UC2 is actually my fave single player shooter I've played, Ive played R2, COD4, but Ive never really warmed to the FPS because I prefer 3rd person, it seems more natural to me. Agree with thesaid glitches and the AI is a bit weak, it doesnt spoil the gameplay really but could be improved. Any tips for other 3rd person shooters on the PS3?
What people ignore is, this game isnt made just or hardcore gamers, its a game none gamers pick up and become emersed into. And in playing to all crowds it does very well
9/10 - And I feel somewhat harsh giving it only a 9, best on the PS3 so far
