Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

I'm a little bit behind the curve on completing the single player element of Resistance 2 - and I have to admit I am surprised there is no review thread on it already!

All in all i thought it was a very good game - everyway as good as the original. It gets off to a good start IMHO with the Iceland level. A high paced start is precisely what is needed in an action/Sci-Fi shooter - and the running around to destroy the initial boss was spot on. Throughout the enemy - the Chimera - is as good as the original. Not the brightest enemy in the world but fun to fight especially when they are rushing in large numbers. The new health system works better than the first game - although the game doesn't always offer much cover!

What really makes Resistance 2 IMHO is the weapons - I don't think there was a bad weapon amongst them. The human weapons all had punch and the Chimera ones were fun. A FPS game lives or dies on it's arsenal of weapons and Resistance 2 scores top marks from me in this area. Special mentions have to go to the Magnum (the first time a hand gun has ever been good - the exploding secondary function was brilliant!) and the Auger Rifle (that can see and fire through walls). I hope other FPS producers pay close attention to the weapons here because Resistance 2 gets the balance and range spot on.

Obviously there are some down sides. The game is as linear as you can get. The way to go is always clearly defined. The weapon you need to kill the upcoming baddie is always to hand. But the game tells a good story well which, IMHO, is worth a hell of alot more than some free roaming bore-a-thon such as Far Cry 2. Graphics too are fairly ropey - colourful and vibrant locations but simplistic styling. It was disappointing not to see Resistance 2 make more of it's locations by rendering noteable landmarks - the first game did this well with York and London. Finally I would add that I thought the black and white cutscenes of the original served the game's atmosphere better than the normal ones in the sequel - but frankly that it just being picky.

I make no secret of the fact I don't really like console gaming and prefer to use a PC. But with exclusive titles like Resistance 2 it more than justifies having a PS3 in my setup. Overall I would rate this game 8 / 10.

Roll on Resistance 3!

8 for me too. Some great little story touches, some nice large-scale battles and a decent engine bring it together with awesome weapons to make it a solid 8 for me

Re: Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

Must add my vote too - between 8 and 9 out of 10. I am still playing R2 even after getting to Supreme Commander status, changing from co-op to competition along the way (but getting my backside regularly kicked by pimply, pre-pubescent kids).

The game developers got the mix right I think, building on the original game's theme and I for one can't wait for R3 to emerge.

Nope, Resistance 2 is more like a arcade game faster.

Re: Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

I really didn't like this game, it just felt too restricted to me, I don't know what about it but it just didn't feel right. The online mode isn't very appealing to me either. I think I preffered the Fall of Man.

Re: Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

I enjoyed the game and gave it a 7. Very good storyline. As mentioned, the weapons are great, the Auger is a great weapon to use. Single player will always come first for me, if there is a decent mutiplayer, it's a bonus. Luckily, I've got not problems with the on-line features. I don't use it often, but it's still a novelty to go on-line and find 68 people battling out on one map and have a scrap with them.

I agree with the above, better than COD5, but not as good as COD4.

Re: Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

I've been really enjoying this game, I didnt in the beggining, the graphics arent quite the best the PS3 has to offer but they are decent and I'm not a FPS fan but I've been getting addicted to this 1. The first level had a pretty ugly look to it to boot but it gets better on subsequent levels. I'd agree it is very linear and more freedom may add to the game but its linearity is part of its arcadey addictiveness too imo. Overall its kept me coming back for more (which most games dont), given excitement, had a good learning curve and a good range of weapons.

I won't leave a score because I've played very few of the top FPS games. I've only played Rainbows 6 Two and a Tom Clancy Game on the original X-Box, I've played a tiny bit of COD 3 but not enough to properly compare. I certainly thought it was a a couple of rating points above Rainbows 6 part 2 though, despite not finnishing either

Out of interest how does everyone think it compares to the other FPS'ers on PS3 like Killzone 2, Biohazard, COD4, COD5?

I'd say it's better than COD5 but not as good as COD4. Not a big fan of KZ2, I hated the heavy feel to it which quite a few people tried to justify.

Never played RFOM but enjoyed the single player of Resistance 2. Not so keen on the multi player so 7/10.

Re: Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

To me the best way I could describe the single player campaign in this is:

Resistance FOM + Healthy dose of Half life2 = Resistance 2

Only on level 3 so far so will vote and maybe add a bit to the review later

Re: Resistance 2 PS3 Reviews

Quite an average game IMO. Resistance 1 seemed ok, and you had to look hard to see why it was a next gen game; the graphics were nothing special per say, compared to late PS2 games; but look at the size of levels, complexity of weapons, etc. The graphics are never going to look like COD, as its supposed to have a slight unreal feel, or 'aged'.

Resistance 2 just picks up where 1 left it. But online is woeful. A couple advantages of R1 was the lack of Host Ended Game, and then also how FAST the game plays. I've kept R1 because it is so fast and smooth. R2 feels like you're jogging, not running; turning around is slow too. (not nearly as bad as Killzone 2 though). Also don't like the new weapons - theres no real difference in accuracy and penetration; R1 there was clear differences. Co=op is fun, but gets repetitive.
