I'm a little bit behind the curve on completing the single player element of
Resistance 2 - and I have to admit I am surprised there is no review thread on it already!
All in all i thought it was a very good game - everyway as good as the original. It gets off to a good start IMHO with the Iceland level. A high paced start is precisely what is needed in an action/Sci-Fi shooter - and the running around to destroy the initial boss was spot on. Throughout the enemy - the Chimera - is as good as the original. Not the brightest enemy in the world but fun to fight especially when they are rushing in large numbers. The new health system works better than the first game - although the game doesn't always offer much cover!
What really makes
Resistance 2 IMHO is the weapons - I don't think there was a bad weapon amongst them. The human weapons all had punch and the Chimera ones were fun. A FPS game lives or dies on it's arsenal of weapons and
Resistance 2 scores top marks from me in this area. Special mentions have to go to the Magnum (the first time a hand gun has ever been good - the exploding secondary function was brilliant!) and the Auger Rifle (that can see and fire through walls). I hope other FPS producers pay close attention to the weapons here because
Resistance 2 gets the balance and range spot on.
Obviously there are some down sides. The game is as linear as you can get. The way to go is always clearly defined. The weapon you need to kill the upcoming baddie is always to hand. But the game tells a good story well which, IMHO, is worth a hell of alot more than some free roaming bore-a-thon such as
Far Cry 2. Graphics too are fairly ropey - colourful and vibrant locations but simplistic styling. It was disappointing not to see
Resistance 2 make more of it's locations by rendering noteable landmarks - the first game did this well with York and London. Finally I would add that I thought the black and white cutscenes of the original served the game's atmosphere better than the normal ones in the sequel - but frankly that it just being picky.
I make no secret of the fact I don't really like console gaming and prefer to use a PC. But with exclusive titles like
Resistance 2 it more than justifies having a PS3 in my setup. Overall I would rate this game
8 / 10.
Roll on
Resistance 3!
