Fallout:New Vegas - Preview Thread

Quote:
At a press event in the United Kingdom, Fallout 3 developer Bethesda today announced a new externally-developed entry in the post-apocalyptic role-playing series.

Titled Fallout New Vegas, it's being developed by Obsidian Entertainment (Alpha Protocol, Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II) with PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 versions planed for a simultaneous launch in 2010.

New Vegas will be an RPG in the style of Fallout 3, Bethesda noted, but the company did not confirm if it uses the same engine. The studio also stressed that it came up with the idea for New Vegas internally and then pitched it to Obsidian, not the other way around.

Excellent news, should be great.

Greatness depends on what they do DLC wise.

Nah, Bethesda have shunned PS3 owners with lack of DLC for FO3 but it's still my favourite game of recent times.

I don't think DLC makes or breaks greatness, it's just a nice bonus if they get it right.

If you're referring to Fallout 3 then no. The 360 and PC versions have exclusive DLC which is not available on the PS3 game and quite possibly not be released on the PS3.

Thats a bit poor isnt it has ms thrown cash at that or bethesda just not supporting it you would of thought the extra revenue it would bring in on a sensational game would be worth porting it to the ps3 shafted again then missing a trick there

Re: Fallout:New Vegas - Preview Thread

Listening to the latest Invisible Walls podcast the game will have a new character and ditch the pip-boy. Let's hope we get both this and 'The Pitt' at some point.

Re: Fallout:New Vegas - Preview Thread

Hi guys, excuse my ignorance - I'm at work and can't view!

am I correct in my assumption that this is a brand new title and not DLC?

And Bethesda aren't developing it whatsoever? I like the PIP Boy but, never had one in oblivion & that is my all time favourite game but when it comes to shooting the V.A.T.S is awesome!

Either way I love Fallout 3 and was devastated not to have DLC .... lets hope this makes up for it!

Brand new title made by the original makers of Fallout 1 & 2 but in the style of Fallout 3.

All things so far pointing to greatness.

It's a brand new game due for release in 2010 and being developed by Obsidian who were responsible for Neverwinter Nights 2 and Knights Of The Old Republic 2. Some members of the Obsidian team were also part of the original Black Isle Studios development team responsible for the previous Fallout games.

The most recent edition of PC Gamer US, has revealed new information regarding Bethesda’s latest RPG.
Courtesy of Duck and Cover we have discovered that,
* The box on the first page of the preview names Bethesda as both the publisher and the developer, while the article text itself gives due credit to Obsidian and discusses the devs’ work on Fallout, Fallout 2 and Van Buren.
* New California Rangers wear modified LAPD riot armor. The trenchcoat guy from the teaser is identified as one in the article.
* Gun modifications will increase damage, ammo capacity, accuracy, rate of fire and more
* The player will be able to have two or three companions in their party

* With Raul the ghoul in your party, you’ll start to pick up clues that he’s more than just a simple mechanic

* Unsurprisingly, deathclaws and radscorpions are mentioned

* From the screenshot, Fore! indeed looks like an attack on the head, not groin, as mentioned in an earlier preview

* The dinosaur casino is identified as Dinky the Dinosaur

* NCR is described as large and powerful but bureaucratic
There are also a few interesting quotes from the writers of the article such as this one from Chris Avellone who said,
It’s a very amusing location design-wise. Vegas is like a whole city-wide amusement park. We can play on different themes, different styles. It’s fun for the artists, it’s fun for the designers… I don’t know how much fun it’s going to be for the programmers.
Finally the Magazine also reveals information in regards to the karma system,
The Karma system is mostly the same as in Fallout 3, but checked less often. Mostly we rely on reputation, because that’s what people know. Karma is just a general indicator of how much of a son of a bitch you are. If you murder people in secret, your reputation doesn’t go down because no on knows you did anything, so you can maintain a good reputation but your karma has tanked really heavily. Karma does influence some things, but reputation is usually what most people in the world base their opinions of you on.

It does look like Fallout: New Vegas could turn out to be a brilliant title, but then being based on the previous title it can hardly fail in that department. It will certainly be interesting ransacking through disused casinos and hey Ive always wanted to visit Vegas so I’m sorted.

You're right, it looks almost identical to Fallout 3, though it actually looks a lot like Fallout 3 with the Fellout mod installed. It seems the developers are taking more than a couple of cues from the mod community which isn't a bad thing as I often find the mod community has some amazing ideas, they usually just lack a certain polish and shine which a professional developer can bring to the table.

Well it should do, as its the same engine. I still have not picked up FO3 on the PS3 having played it on the PC, and hearing the "bug" horror stories when your savegame grows. Still fancy playing it on the PS3 though. Still might see if I can get FO3 GOTY if it drops below £20, and then I guess lets hope New Vegas has bugs fixed.

I'm looking forward to this but am concerned that it will suffer the same fate as my F3 GOTY - I now actually expect it to freeze a couple of times a session and Operation Anchorage is pretty much unplayable as a result - the other DLC's have been glitchy but not to this extent.

Mailing Bethesda intially got a decent response (I was somewhat snarky it has to be said) and of the various suggestions, deleting the game data did help for a while but the problem returned after about an hour. On mailing them back to ask for further assistance I just got a cut and paste of the suggestions from the first mail.

So I'd really like to pick up F:NV as soon as it comes out - it looks great and the changes they've made are interesting but it won't be happening - not until I can be pretty sure it's not going to freeze up and drive me as nuts as F3 currently does.

I am in no rush so I will wait until people have high level characters, with big saves to see if it all goes pete tong. I must admit the amount of complaints on the Bethesda forums and other places about how buggy the GOTY edition is when you are high level and/or play the expansions is a joke. Why have they never addressed any of the issues? Its a poor show from Bethesda and REALLY does put me off Vegas, especially when its the exact same engine, so if Obsidian are not eating the bugs, it will suffer the same.

Maybe once Obsidian sort all the engine bugs out, Bethesda will revisit FO3, its a dream I know and a long shot but I honestly don't know why Bethesda are not doing anything about the problems.

Instead of Pipboy being a static screen on your arm, they could do him as a hologram that pops up to provide info? eg: displays minimap, can highlight objects of interest, and so on.

I'm thinking like everyone's favourite helper, Clippy: "Oh, it looks like you're trying to shoot that DeathClaw? Let's have fun learning how! First let me swap your gatling laser for this 10mm pistol so you can learn the basics..."
