Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - Preview thread

The first details have just been announced. This taken from IGN.com:

"Konami today announced PES 2010, and boldly stated that it "will benefit from the most exhaustive raft of new features in the series' history, with every aspect of the game benefiting from key improvements." The game is coming on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, PSP, PS2 and mobile phones this Australian Spring / American Autumn.

PES Productions, the Tokyo-based development team, is setting out to make this the most realistic football simulation available, with player feedback a key part of the process. "We have been monitoring feedback and comments on the progression of the PES series for some time now, and PES 2010 will see us implementing a great deal of the ideas players have been requesting," commented Naoya Hatsumi, Producer for PES Productions at Konami Digital Entertainment Japan. "We aim to make PES 2010 a more user-friendly, immediate experience that places the emphasis on getting straight into the gameplay for which the series is famed. PES 2010 will look better, will play better, and will recreate real football as closely as the current hardware will allow."

The team has expanded for development of PES 2010, with the creation of a number of dedicated departments focused on different aspects of the game, such as online. The key additions/changes to the game are:

Gameplay: "PES 2010 focuses on enhancing the excitement of matches between players, making for a truly challenging experience that will constantly test the player. Intuitive zonal defending will cover spaces and players need to look constantly for new ways to attack. PES 2010 focuses on being a real football simulation, as it requires both strategic play and quick reactions, as in real life. In addition to key out-field elements, goalkeepers are more versatile and with abilities matching those of modern shot-stoppers. The game's referees have also been reworked, with smarter AI elements allowing them to make more balanced calls during matches."

Improved Visuals: "PES 2010 has undergone a major visual revamp, with its celebrated player likenesses and animations now even closer to those of real-life players – including live player expressions to be depicted with an improved lighting system which differentiates between various conditions! Stadium detail is also massively improved, with the grass and other in-stadium elements finely depicted."

All-new Animations and Moves: "Animations now dovetail into each other seamlessly, with dribbling and shots on goals worked into dribbling animations. More individual skills are also on show, including new flicks and tricks that have a definite showing on the way a game flows. Several elements have been completely reworked, with the dribbling, turning and kicking animations greatly enhanced, while there is a noticeable change in pace when a player passes a ball from a standing position than from within a run."

Enhanced Master League: "Master League has been thoroughly renewed with the enhancement of managerial aspects, which enables users to enjoy managing a team for a longer career lifespan. Seen by many as a key contributor to the series' success, the Master League elements in PES 2010 have been bolstered by far-ranging and vital new additions, dedicated to enriching the mode."

AI: "The Tokyo team has worked to improve the AI of the game, with Teamvision 2.0 implemented. Midfielders and defenders now work together to cover open space and close down attacks, meaning that cover can be provided for lower-ranked defenders. This also has the additional effect of removing soft goals, thus returning PES 2010 to its simulation roots. In terms of attacking, players can also now move several players (at) once, sending them into different areas, opening up more goal-scoring possibilities than ever before. As such, PES 2010 necessitates a new level of control from the player. Strategic thinking is as important as quick passing, but the new system greatly opens the way the player oversees control of the team. In free kick scenarios, for instance, players can now instigate the runs of the players awaiting the ball in the penalty area."

Individual Play Characteristics: "In previous PES games, the team formation has determined the movements of the players. PES 2010 introduces a new system wherein the individual attacking and defending nature of the players is integral to the way they play. Each player enjoys unique AI tied into their best abilities, and is reflected in the actions of their team mates – i.e. if a player who is known to be a good crosser of the ball is in possession, more players will flood the penalty area to receive it. Similarly, if a player is known to be good with close control, defenders will work to cover their stronger side, while lone strikers will be automatically supported by midfielders on receipt of the ball."

Strategy Use: "A new power gauge system allows users to balance their strategy in a quick, but wide-ranging way before a match. Every element – pass frequency, movement, the line of defence, width of play, or the position of the front line – can be altered to match those of a favoured club: Juventus Turin are a dangerous side on the counter-attack, for instance, while FC Barcelona use width in their attack. These formulations can be altered at any point, too, with Home and Away matches forcing different circumstances on the user, as does the rigours of a Master League season."

Enhanced Online: "A new dedicated section of the Tokyo team is committed to improving the online side of PES 2010. More downloadable content is also planned. Konami has supported PES 2009 with the release of new licensed teams, transfer updates, etc, and this support will grow for PES 2010. Team and content updates are planned throughout the game's lifespan. These will make the game even more bespoke to the player's match day needs."

Match-Day Atmosphere: "Crowd reactions to the on-field action are now more varied, with all new chants and cheers. The subtle difference between Home and Away matches will be reproduced, and the crowd will react spontaneously to specific situations in a game, showing their disdain or pleasure as fouls are committed and goals scored. Likewise, the commentary has been altered to offer a fresher, more concise overview of the game."

Penalties: "An all-new system has been implemented, offering greater control, placing and accuracy."

Exclusive Europa League License: "Konami has strengthened its relationship with UEFA and can announce it has secured the exclusive video game rights for the Europa League Licence (formerly known as the UEFA Cup). In addition Konami will be enhancing and developing the use of the UEFA Champions League within PES 2010 to make even better use of the best club football competition in the world."

Some good points there but still not enough to solve people's biggest concerns (e.g. online play details are quite vague in my opinion).

Maybe I be the first to say that Fifa will still be better Just kidding (or ami?)

Seriously though; the individual player characteristics seem like a nice addition.

Sadly Konami have lost their way when it comes to Pro Evo I have played every version since they started way back on the PS1 when it was ISS. I said that PES 2009 would be the last one I purchased I was disappointed with it but im sure i'll buy this one but if its yet another rehash im afraid i'll be switching to FIFA!

an interesting read.

problem is that every year they list changes that are going to made and they never actually happen, or they fix one problem and unnecessarily reintroduce another (e.g. your own players diving in and getting sent off - i'm sure its more frequent than the previous ones)

As others have said, Konami wheel out a raft of changes and improvements and they invariably dont materialise.

Penalties: "An all-new system has been implemented, offering greater control, placing and accuracy." What? All new system - hardly needed. Press shoot and use direction. Simple enough.

Just dont let the same sight-inflicted people design the in-game menus.....

It's a tough balance but I'm hoping they can get it right between atmosphere (massively lacking in PES 08/09 imo) and quality football simulation (massively lacking in FIFA imo). To me PES recently has been a bit like a scientist inventing a robot that can do art. All the game fundmentals are basically good but it has lacked soul. But to cap a football game off with a virtually unplayable on-line service is absolute financial suicide and totally takes the ***s.

Konami I don't know how you've done it but I am somehow intreagued about PES10. Don't let us faithfulls down this time and give us the real deal

The one thing i do not like about fifa is that all the players feel the same, they just run at different speeds. In pro evo, each player is feels different. Hopefully, they get it right this year. Plus an online system that actually works would also go well (fifa manage it pretty well).

re: Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - Preview thread

The thing is, PES6 online was OK and was a decently playable experience. But not many people played online at that stage and I don't think Konami spent any money on creating an infrastructure that could support a sudden growth in players. That's why we got the lag.

They need to have fixed this. I pre-ordered every PES game until 2009 and only bought PES 2009 when the price dropped below £20. It's not a terrible game and it beats FIFA in terms of the gradient of difficulty levels and that you have to play brilliant as a poor team in order to beat the big teams.

But the AI has actually moved backwards in the last few generations and the fundamental engine is no different to the PS2 versions such as PES 5 and 6 (tho with the odd tweak). I was really hoping for a brand new engine and I don't think they'll win their fanbase back until that happens.

I've become addicted to MLB The Show and it really shows what a sports game should be able to do. I know baseball isn't everyones cup of tea and that the AI doesn't have to be as clever as it has to be for a football game. But Konami are forcing fans to look elsewhere for a sports game because theirs is now 4/5 years out of date and gamers are finding it unacceptable and voting with their wallets.

I posted the IGN preview because it still makes interesting reading but I'll follow the same purchasing strategy this year again - try the demo, read reviews that I trust, and if I'm not happy wait for an under £20 price point

I thought it was p2p and just shoddy net-code, something Konami are well known for

You're probably right - I'm not IT literate enough to be able to tell the difference.

But it worked well for me at least - I didn't get the lag that we've had with the PS3 experience which makes the game unplayable.

But it looks like we're all saying the same things that we were saying last year and the year before which shows how poor a showing they've made of things.

The main problem is there is only one year between versions. How much can they really get done? The series needs a major revamp and they just don't have the resources, like EA, to make so many changes and make them work in such a short time. They should consider leaving it out for a year imo. PES games in recent time feel a little rushed.

No mention of official FIFA license for player names either.

EDIT: This is where i read it, LINK, was from a forum though so dont know if there is any truth in it.

The licence for player names is the Fifpro one rather than the Fifa one. Not sure if Konami still have it or not.

I don't really hold out much hope for Pes2010. I would love to be wrong but it has fallen so far behind imo that nothing short of a complete new engine would get it back on track.

re: Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - Preview thread

I'm hoping this one delivers. I thought 09 was good offline, online was very bad...but I havent been wanting to play it as much as in the past...probably because I used to play 5 and 6 online but since then haven't been able to with all the lag.

Wonder what they'll do to master league, I've only done a few seasons on 09 because it was just the same as previous and took ages to get classic players rather than the pes points (which needs to come back!)...

Anyway, I'll keep the faith (for the last year)...

I've only had PES 09 for a couple of weeks, and the last version I played was on the PS2. The controls are virtually identical and it only plays slightly differently-- a little adjusting is required that's all.

Besides the graphics overhaul and upgrade in speed, the PS2 versions were hardly better than the PS1 imo-- they didn't add much to the gameplay. My favourite was ISS Pro Evo 2 on PS1; I thought the gameplay was spot on despite it being slow. In almost 10 years they've only made minor tweaks and stood still for the most part, so I'm not holding much hope for a revolutionary PES 2010.

Just hope that this is the dogs' danglies this year, especially as my team are in the prem league next season

Maybe the rumours that konami have been working on this for a couple of years are true, but wasn't that previously mentioned in relation to pes 2009?

if konami got rid of the konami id and developed some decent online servers, that would be a start .

I have to say tho I will be getting it no matter what :D I just love the game play of the game, and i also dont like fifa lol
Will definetley be waiting for a review this year, unless its £27 in asda again.

I have been playing fifa alot recently and its just not doing it for me. The gameplay is dreadful, player reactions are terrible but the menus, online and player AI is amaizing. IMO after playing both games, i still think PES has the best gameplay but it lacks the quality FIFA has brought to the new era of PS3. If PES isnt sorted this year i might just give up on football games as i dont find FIFA very fun to play

I'm the same, fifa is by far the more polished game but I can't stand the gameplay.

I've bought and sold fifa 09 twice this year and gone back to pro

Yea me too - infact I think this is my 4th FIFA 09! Brought and sold twice on 360 and twice on PS3.

Its got something that keeps dragging me back in (might be the lower league clubs), but sometimes it does play like a dog and other times, its breathtakingly realistic.

When I play on FIFA for a long while, then go back to PES, PES feels like cheating as its so 'easy' to play (I'm still no good at it though).

I'm hoping for improvements to both this year...

Re: Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - Preview thread

i admit fifa has improved and pes has taken a few back steps, but all in all, they are both pretty even, having owned pes 2009 and fifa 2009 at some point, overall pes still edges it, pes feels like football, fifa looks like football but didn't play as well, i have always hated past fifa titles and been as pes boy over the years, i did like this years fifa but got bored quite easily with it, i find pes more addictive, and yes each player feels different in pes, fifa each player feels the same but with different speeds,

pes 1,2,3,4 were all good and kept improving each year but....
PES 5 is the best football game ever made, fact.
I would be happy with a high def version of that

pes 6 and 7 were poor
latest 2009 pes improved on them but doesn't come close to pes 5

Re: Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - Preview thread

Konami have got a massive amount of work on their hands if they're to catch up with fifa. Of course fifa is far from perfect but '09 seems so much more of a finished product than the pes effort. As has been said many times before, they've got pes5 in their archives - just go back to that to see how to make a football game.

Re: Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - Preview thread

Every year I play both and for the past 2 years I've gone with Fifa. I had high hopes for PES last year and was really annoyed at how bad I thought it was.

Here's hoping this year clicks, it'll be nice to have a change again.
