Red Dead Redemption - Preview

Via Kotaku

The sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar's take on spaghetti westerns, is coming to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, Rockstar Games announced this morning.

Red Dead Redemption is the story of former outlaw John Marston and will take place at the turn of the 20th century when the "lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age."

"Along the way, players will experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it."

“The team at San Diego have massively exceeded our expectations with the sheer depth of experiences in Red Dead Redemption,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “The seamless combination of breathtaking beauty and intense action, all woven together with strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment is mind-blowing. We think this game helps to push the limits of what an open-world gaming experience can be.”

The game will use Rockstar's proprietary RAGE game engine, which was used in Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angles.

The game will feature an open-world environment which will include frontier towns, wildlife-packed prairies and mountain passes.

Re: Red Dead Revolver Preview Thread

Always fancied RDR, but never got around to getting it.

I hope they beef-up their GTA:IV targeting system - 'cos it was pants & that they add some online modes too. Always fancied a bit of online Cowboys & Indians (or Native Americians nowadays I suppose..)

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

It's surprising how untouched the western is in the gaming world, it appears all the elements that make a western movie would compliment a game. Good news about using the GTA engine, thought that was brilliant.

I do remember an old light gun game at an arcade where it was real people, like a movie that you shot in the wild west...man that rocked my world

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

This could be one of those gems if they do it right.

I love my westerns and i agree they haven't really reached their potential in the gaming world.

Heck Sunset Riders was prob the best and that was just Contra with six-shooters.

-

I enjoyed RDR and Gun myself but they had something missing....If they can tighten up the gameplay from these two titles and add that "man with no name" flavour to the game i will lap this up.

I think that may be the same one that was released on the SegaCD/MegaCD and 3DO but used control pads on those home consoles. I think it was one of a number of games that used full motion video for the graphics and were released on the those consoles.

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

I quite liked the original Red Dead Revolver; yes it had issues, but it did feel like a pasta-western - maybe more penne than spaghetti?

If they do in fact pull off GTA in an open-world western game it could be really special. Main concerns would be if they retain the bullet-time effect for fast-draw combat (which needed work), variety of travel modes (fast travel via stage-coach or train? and then you're left with horses...) and variety of weapons. I wonder from those screen shots if you can form gangs/posse, which might add variety?

I remember renting the first one and really enjoying it, so I'll definatly be keeping my eye on this one. Multiplayer defiantly has potential dozens of people riding round on horses shooting at each other, or a narrow street shootout complete with bars/saloons etc..., sounds awsome in theory, lets hope they pull it off.

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

Brilliant news!

I loved RDR, one of my favourite games on the PS2.

I guess the problem that R* will have is that this will always be the 'Western GTA' regardless of whether it's made that way or not.

I'm ruddy excited, though not sure if we'll see it this year.

Edit: I see the wors 'open world' in the press release. Must learn to read!

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

Gave the original a bash for the first time last night, I thought the shooting gimmick in it was excellent! For those who have not played it - you can press a button which momentarily puts everything into slow-mo, from there you use the right analogue stick to pin point certain parts of the body (knees, head etc.) then it snaps back to real time and lets the shots off in really quick succession.

I hope they keep that as on the new engine it would look really good to see the enemies body react.

looking forward to more info

That trailer looks pretty good.
I love a good old western. Makes me want to dig out my Sergio Leone videos. Just don't have a video player anymore.

So, is this due out next year then?

Big ol' 3 page feature on IGN :

IGN: Red Dead Redemption: A Man and His Horse

What do you guys want to see in this game? I'm hoping for a railway system (especially now this game has confirmed a sand box environment a la GTA IV) where various missions would be based around (Hi jacking, escort missions etc.) as well as being used for transport/smuggling.

Also hoping they have that sniper rifle that was in 3:10 to yuma

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

A gun slinging mini game would be fun. Offering someone out in a saloon and then going outside, stand in the middle of a dusty street and 'Draw'.

There must be some gambling as well in the saloons. Couldn't be a western without that.

Re: Red Dead Redemption - Preview

Part 2 of the IGN interview is now up:

IGN: Red Dead Redemption: Into the Wild West

Multiplayer confirmed!

Quote:
There'll be multiplayer as well. "Charging around on horses and stagecoaches and trains, shooting each other in a multiplayer world. It's pretty epic, but it's not finalized to talk about in any more detail than that. We're still learning a lot as we learn how to do multiplayer games successfully. We definitely feel there's something really fun about third-person multiplayer games, just as we feel there's something really fun with third-person single-player games…Even between GTA IV and the Lost and Damned we made quite a leap forward in how the games were structured and how they played and I think we're looking to do that again with everything we do going forward."

Has anyone seen Deadwood? That would be a great model to base it on. I'd quite fancy a bit of prospecting here and there too.

I'm hoping they keep the hazy morals from GTA and don't try to put in some kind of karma (good/evil) system if you kill npc's. Would love side missions where you can do a bit of bounty hunting, walk into a saloon and have to draw down on some horse thief for $1000 'dead or alive'.

Also hope they keep a similar mission system to GTA with good characters that branch off and offer other side missions.

I've read there will be the usual assortment on mini-games, mostly card related but also 'five finger fillet' which I'm lead to believe is where you rapidly stab a knife between your fingers - will be interesting to see how they implement that one.

There's a piece on it in this months Edge which is a decent read.

That link doesn't seem to work but I suspect it's a preview and not a review as the game isn't even finished yet.

The official site still says Autumn 2009 but I'm pretty sure too that along with Mafia 2 it's been pushed back to 2010.
