Lord Of The Rings:Conquest - Preview Thread

Anyone played the demo on the US PSN store yet. It's supposed to be a Starwars:Battlefront type game but in the Lord Of The Rings universe.

Re: Lord Of The Rings:Conquest - Preview Thread

I left it downloading last night and had a quick go this morning. It was actually quite fun. There are 4 classes: the swordsman, scout, archer and magician. Online was relatively lag free and the addition of ents and trolls adds more depth. Combat did feel a little clunky though.

Horrible mess of a game. Barely even any gameplay in there - simple button mashing. Just repeatedly press any button without even looking at the screen and you will progress.

Any fans of LOTR will be appalled by what they have done with the "mage" class too.

Has to be the worst demo I have played for many years.

Direct quote from the latest Official PS Mag:

Our first play of Pandemic's Rings-meets Battlefront slasher reveals a lack of spark, with the pretty movie sequneces dissolving into sluggish, thumb-numbing waves of butchery.

Doesn't sound too promising.

Looks like its put through some middleware-generic-o-engine, dont you just love EA ruining potentially good games.

Reminded me of the Onimusha games on the PS2 - with less fog. Deleted.

I'd say that was pretty accurate, the intro video was nice, felt like an extension of the film, but the gameplay, er, didn't.

Played the Demo & it is that bad!

lol, onlly joking! But it certainly is NOT SWBF. I'm a lil dudious about the controls, the character is toooo big on the screen IMO.

A few things definately need sorting out with the online mode.

Re: Lord Of The Rings:Conquest - Preview Thread

After having played the demo for countless hours online, I have to say overall I am very disappointed... the full game needs a massive overhaul - I really wanted to love this game (being LOTR) and it should have been amazing...

The demo is so poor - clunky, rushed, unpolished and has terrible graphics. I'm really surprised that this demo is so bad?? There are so many areas which need improving that I can't even bother listing all of them... EA should have waited several months before releasing this game... it just has so much work needed...

Just some areas which were disappointing: Walking in a half foot puddle of water and immediately dying (even on horseback???), Heros being laughably weak (1X mage and 1X archer can take down any hero in seconds with ease - also it would appear a scout can kill a hero in one backstabbing button press?? LOL - Happened to me several times as Gandalf...) - 9 times out of 10, being a Hero is nothing but a rapid death sentence lol. Terrible last gen graphics - doesn't feel like I'm playing the demo on a PS3 at all, very restrictive level designs - I hate the way everything is so linear - you can't climb anything, you can't interact with anything, you can't really walk half the places you want to (e.g. in the Shire level) - you see a fence and inviting grassland and houses behind that fence, but when you jump you can't go there, it's annoying. Also, when riding horses, when you clip the edges of the stuff it's terrible how the game engine handles it. Just one example - There's a signpost in the Shire with enough room to go past it on both sides, but if you try to go past it on the fence side, you can't - even though there's plenty of space... (it's shocking how the horse's legs keep running on the spot!?) - what kind of programming is that??? Why can't you jump anything when on a horse??? Very unreactive environments - you should be able to destroy most of the environment(!) - especially as the troll. Horrible cameras, slow unresponsive clunky controls, boring voice overs - the "50 points" needed to win voice over is so bad on so many levels that it's absolutely hilarious, needs 32 player battles instead of only 16 (this is meant to be LOTR after all!!) and so on...

The single player in the demo is embarrassingly bad... won't even go there... If I ever bought this game, I wouldn't even bother with the single player side after seeing the demo.

Despite it's many problems, I don't agree that the game is a button masher - there's quite alot of strategy involved (after you've played for a while) and using the Balrog and the trolls can be alot of fun. If you button mash online, you won't last long - well not against me anyway(!) - Multiplayer is fun but not really because the game is any good... just because it's 'multiplayer'.

Anyway - I have no doubt that LOTR fans will end up buying this, as there is nothing really for LOTR fans on the PS3 and they really have no choice. I was expecting EA to do better, as they have some half decent LOTR games already on the PC. Based purely on the Demo, it's not a very good game - should have been brilliant.

i definitely agree
i really like how the online concept was a third person and adventuress(zelda)
i was disappointed with the swordsmen attacks it is slow(wish it was a basic swing like onimusha 1), and the reach and damage combo are ridiculous i cant even kill or knock a hobbit with 1/5 hp that was couple feet away
anyway
it would be sweet if onimusha was an online game like that with classes similar to characters of onimusha 2 and 4

wouldnt you agree

i'll give it 8 out of 10
influence me a lot

plz reply

Re: Lord Of The Rings:Conquest - Preview Thread

This actually got a dcecent review on Playr yesterday. It got 7/10.

They said the evil campaign is a lot more fun than the good campaign, but unfortunatley you have to play through the good first.

As the game is already out I'm going to start a play and help thread in the main PS3 games section. If you want to re-post your question in there then feel free.
