Re: EA Sports MMA - Preview Thread

Hmmm, i'm not convinced. It looks a little "cartoony" graphics-wise. Would be interesting to see how smooth it runs though.

On first impressions i had more wow factor seeing UFC 2009 Undisputed for the first time.

I like the way that you can fight in different arenas other than the octagon will EA be using the same sort of controls used for fight night (ie stick controls)? as for me i think i would prefer that than button bashing ?

Saw a demo during StrikeForce's last event. Looked OK but seemed a bit awkward. Fighters throwing kicks looked like they had a dislocated hip at the time. They looked a bit shiny and plasticy too.

Is Fifa pretty much the same as Pro Evo?

Same sport, different organisation, different fighters.

I agree. The gameplay seemed pretty bad in the newest trailer. Dodgy movement and striking! Here it is below:

Came across this as well. Pretty funny lol

I agree, graphics looks a bit worse than UFC 2009, but maybe the gameplay is what this game is really about. I will be interested to see UFC 2010 vs EA Sports MMA comparisations.

Is there any release date for this game?

They've just mentioned estimate late 2010 release...although they are apparently going to show the game properly in playable format at this years E3 in June so we should get to see whether its good or not. Certainly seems to need some work if its going to match UFC 2010!

Big risk for EA if you ask me. It's not like Pro Evo and Fifa both having a game out but one having the Fifa name and the other not, MMA is a sport and a market almost completely dominated by the UFC brand. UFC 2009 and 2010 will both have been a major success by the time EA MMA gets out.

Plus for the EA game to come out, without the UFC brand, without almost the entire UFC roster, I think they're facing an uphill struggle in the same way that other organisations face a struggle to compete with the UFC in real life.

Gameplay could be the saviour but in the demos shown at StrikeForce's event, it didn't look too hot. Plastic looking fighters and awkward jerky movements.

Ever heard the interview Dana White did about EA's interest in the game? The UFC were in talks with them but EA didn't consider MMA to be a sport and were not interested. Then when 09 was a success for THQ, EA were in like a flash.

Edit, found it...
Quote:
“I went to EA Sports,” he said. “Know what EA Sports said? ‘It’s not a sport. This isn’t a sport. We would never get involved in something like this.’ We come out with a video game and now they want to come out with a video game? (Expletive) you.”

Yeah the online aspect sounds awesome (except for the hype video thing ).

The game generally seems to have improved a lot:

The animation and smoothness is great in this:

The jury's out on this for me.

I like the variety in the roster but watching those vids the first thing that popped into my head was the graphics are like the Pride FC game I had on PS2 all those years back. Then again, online with UFC 2010 is a train wreck of chance. I am so disappointed in it that it's put me off any further UFC games from THQ.

I will give EA MMA a play if they release a demo and will try from there.

It's funny how the curse of the cover athlete that EA is famous for has even transferred to their new MMA brand.

Is the online that bad? I only got hold of UFC2010 on Monday, & am just going through the career. The only issue I've come across is blinking submissions. The AI can beat you instantly almost every time it puts a submission on you, but I couldn't make a small child with a gammy leg submit

That's why I didn't bother getting 2010. That was my biggest issue with the 09 game and I heard it hadn't improved. Way too many flash KOs and subs far too difficult.

I'm really looking forward to this. The grappling looks a lot better than UFC Undisputed. The realism in struggling to defend and gain a better position looks quite impressive. Hopefully it won't have as many flash KO's as UFC.

so the demos out what does everyone think of it. personally i think it lacks the overall visual finish of UFC but offers more realistic gameplay.

at first i couldnt work out the controls but after seeing a tutorial online (see link) the game became much more fun

I'll have to check out that video. Couldn't decide if I liked the demo or not. Think it's more than likely my suckyness with the analogue stick striking. Always like the idea of it but usually end up being pretty horrible with it. Definitly gonna give this more tries and see how it feels. I really liked some of the animation when I was chasing Overeem round the cage knocked him down and started punching him on the ground. Seemed pretty damn fluid to me.

You pretty much said exactly what i feel about it as well!

The GFX, animation and movement is very fluid IMO, altough when it gets to the ground if i am on my back i don't know if i just suck but there isn't much i can do in terms of positioning. It feels limited in this position compared to when i played UFC 2009/2010 (which was a long time ago), although i think that might be because i just don't know the controls properly.

I am also struggling with how exactly submissions
work

When i first played the demo i was horrified. Now i've had chance to get used to the controls i love it. The ground aspect of it is pretty simple really, it's all about timing to advance your position or to defend/escape. Can't wait to get hold of the full game this month.

I liked the demo and think that the full game could possibly be better than ufc. The main issue I have with the demo is how easy takedowns are. They seem to happen too easily and frequently. Other than that it has lots of potential, especially if the career mode is good and doesn't let you create max attribute fighters.

Man i absolutely suck at this demo lol. Don't think i have sucked with a game as bad as i have with this so far. I think this game is probably most enjoyable when you know all of the controls inside out, but can equally see ppl being put off. For some reason i am finding it more harder than when i played the UFC game for the first time

Got my copy yesterday and I absolutly love it! Online is amazing I cant praise it enough. You reallt need to learn how to play first in unranked though, jumped straight in and got tapped in a min in my first bout, learnt how to play properly and had a real solid record online was like 20-4 (mostly by sub) ranked in the top hundred then must have lost my concentration and started getting cocky finished up the night 22-8

Anyway heres a few bouts that really made me fall in love with the game.
Got my first championship fight online (technically second but I got a connection error in my first, gutted) decided to be Fedor and faced Randy. Anyway the fight was an absolute war! I was getting the better of him stood up but for the most part he was controlling me and wearing me down we rocked each other a couple times and I was so close to finishing once but he held on. Anyway he managed to grind me down and finish me in the fourth. But there was just so many awesome moments throughout, him taking my back and smashing me only to be saved by the bell, a real long submission battle (only one I got on him) with me very nearly taking the win, I could go on and on.

After that I moved to middleweight and had a lot of success with Miletich and Diaz eventually got a championship fight I was Diaz fighting Hendo. All I can say is wow! If I though the Fedor-Randy fight was good then this was amazing! Similar sort of fight him getting the better of the wrestling, controlling me and me taking the standup (not to say he didnt have his moments) anyway the fight was back and forth both getting rocked multiple times, he was stuffing all my takedowns and punishing me, couldn't get a single sub attempt off, he'd really wore me down and he was much fresher. Anyway we come out for the fifth round and he's really punishing me, its mostly stand up and were trading, anyway were late into the fight and I dont wanna go to judges, I start to have a lot of success with head kicks I throw a few get him in trouble next thing I know he smashes me with an overhand right (had to be ) and I'm on my back getting hammered, I managed to compose, throw off a couple parrys and throw up an arm-bar, I kid you not the longest most intense sub battle ever goes down, my hands were actually shaking, I eventually pull out the sub with less than a minute in the fifth in a fight I'm pretty sure I was losing, was such an amazing feeling, possibly my favourite moment in a game ever.

Anway finally my second to last fight of the evening I was 21-7 I'd really lost my concentration at this point, I was Overeem fighting a guy 0-8 as Sapp I couldn't help but laugh to myself. Came out decided to be cocky put my hand out to touch gloves then threw a leg kick, only for him to throw an overhand right finishing me there and then! Haaa I was deverstated but could only laugh becuase I got what i deserved. Anway final fight was an exact rematch same people and fighters, played it properly this time nothing silly, ended up finishing him in a couple mins without taking a strike. Still had to take my hat off to the guy though.

Sorry about the essay, hope you enjoyed reading it and seriously I would recommend this game to anyone, once you learn it properly and fight someone of a decent standard the fights are amazing, tactical without any cheap exploits being used.
