Avatar - Preview Thread

Haven't seen a preview thread for this game yet. It's one I'm really looking forward to, personally.
And no, this game has nothing to do with the little cartoony boy, not the upcoming "The Last Airbender" movie either.
This is based on James Cameron's upcoming epic movie "Avatar", which will be in full stereoscopic 3D, and so will the game.
Here's the premise of the film, from Wikipedia:
Quote:
The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush rainforest-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms – some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race that humans consider primitive, but are actually more evolutionarily advanced than humans. Standing three meters tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.
Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human 'driver' through a technology that links the driver’s mind to their Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.
Over time, Jake integrates himself into Neytiri's clan, and begins to fall in love with her. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi – forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.
And here's what it has to say about the game:
Quote:
The videogame is set on Pandora, an alien planet featured in the motion picture. The game includes the Na'vi, Pandora's indigenous people and discover other life forms.
The trailer has been released, watch it below:

Re: Avatar - Preview Thread

Aparently this film on Blueray and game will be the primary marketing drivers of 3D tv's for next year...

I was actually considering a panny 42" V10 but think I'll wait as will be really interesting to see how this takes off (and if it affects prices in the same way HDTV's affected the price of SDTV's).

Panasonic makes Avatar marriage official, huge cross-promotion for 3D Blu-ray and TV planned | Home Cinema Choice

Re: Avatar - Preview Thread

Problem is, they say you need 120Hz refresh rate to experience the 3D gaming, whereas my TV is only 60Hz

I have this. It's actually pretty good and in my opinion deserves better than the average review scores it has been saddled with - although I note some higher scores coming in from those who, perhaps not rushed by deadlines have had a more rounded experience

I am playing through the game as a soldier at the moment and plan to play through again as a Navi when I'm finished. The graphics are uniformly excellent as is the atmosphere of exploring an alien world that the game invokes with both wonderment and danger in equal measures. Controls are fine and easy to adapt to although vehicles can feel a little 'loose'.

Most importantly the game is fun and actually reminds me of the type of gaming experience I had on the Super Nintendo with the Super Star Wars trilogy of games. I would definitely recommend this as a solid experience for anyone interested as it's certainly from better stock than the 'rent for trophies' brigade.

Perhaps reviewers have been spoiled by the likes of Assassin's Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 and the rest of the high profile sequels that launch around this time of year but Avatar is definitely worth at least a solid 7 out of 10 based on what i've played so far.

Hope this helps someone!

Definately. I was saying to my other half that I bet the game will be heavily discounted pre-Christmas around the launch of the film and again in the New Year sales. This will be a sub £20 buy in no time and well worth it at that price.

As the game is now out I am closing this thread. Someone can open a Play & Help thread if they want to discuss gameplay.
