Elite IV: Preview Thread

Well it seems this beloved classic is finally getting a full make over for this gen consoles and PC.

At this stage no screen shots or any information about game play so therefore no release date. Only confirmation that is being released on the PS3, 360 & PC.

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

Woohoo, i spent ages playing this on the C64 and still think of docking into a space station when i hear The Blue Danube!

Looking about it's rumoured this wont be release until after The Outsider, due this year, but i do wonder how they'll make such an original game, for it's release, stand out now?

Maybe a massive GTA-in-space type game? Eve online has sort of done fleets, Mass Effect has explored RPG-ish planetary exploration, and in some ways it'd be nice to stick to it's singleplayer trading/upgrading roots, with options for co-op.

REVS. Wow what a blast from the past. I loved that game.
Although it was actually a formula 3 game.
It was Geoff Crammonds first stab at a driving game before writing F1GP for the PC.

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

Actually the Acorn Archimedes was the best version.

Fully shaded graphics and actual interactions between the different factions in the game.

Shame the archimedes only ever sold about 3 machines (my parents thought it would help my learning! damn right there were no games to play on it).

Not gonna get excited about Elite 4, the other games were let downs, too complicated and buggy. Wish they would leave all the adventuring shenanigans and just concentrate on the combat/flight engine with a little bit of trading thrown in.

Whhops sorry. I started off hating it as it was so simmy compared to the other games I played as a kid, but once I starting winning racing and getting the hang of that freaky steering it was a gem

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

To me the BBC B and Electron versions were the ones I remember best and most fondly. I wasted many, many hours playing Elite on those two platforms, more than any game before or probably even since. Great game. They just captured my imagination at the time and even though other versions were technically better, they never quite captured the excitement and enjoyment of the originals. I suppose its a bit like the first (proper) Star Wars Trilogy, the second trilogy may look better but lacked something (or a lot of something!)

Exactly how I remember it... Going back to it today may be a bit of a culture shock though!!!

I thought I was dreaming, but it's true.

Really hope they don't screw it up and stick to the basics that made the first one so good.

I hope they let you play as yourself and don't try to force a character they have invented like in GTA4.

p.s. Sony chatpad bit poo, buttons v small no back light.

p.p.s I had C64 version. It was good but you always had to watch the whole docking sequence, could be a bit boring. At least you docked as soon as you activated the computer in the other versions which left more time for fighting and trading

I remember reading ages ago that was the plan, to leave you ship while docked to wander around a station or space port. It was years ago when I heard that and saw some concept pictures by Frontier Developments. Bearing in mind Breadbin keeps saying that the developments made in The Outsider will be applied to Elite IV, and that looks like a third person game...Your worst nightmares could become true.

Nah. You activated it, it would align you perpendicular to the space station, then turn it off and zoom in and manually align the mouth to your ship You could turn it back on for the last 50m or so if you wished...

... or leave it on and chill to the music

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

The docking computer was only for complete chickens - full speed manual docking was where it was at - don't know how many times i crashed doing that but the feeling of satisfaction when you pulled it off was immense.

Wonder if you will still be able to rank up quickly by leaving the space station, flying a few hundred meters away, turning 180 and shooting the station to get the police vipers to come out - pick them off before they could get out and when it all got too much jump into hyperspace.

What were the octagonal ships called that you occasionally hyperspaced into called?

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

I actually became ELITE rank on the... BBC version I think (which was the original and best).

In fact somewhere in the loft I believe I still have the original Elite Manual. God I adored that game.

Thargoids were great but it was hardly ever you went into Thargoid-Space or whatever it was. The only time I think you could get "Alien Artefacts".

The memories keep coming back... Transporting slaves to another planet and then selling them as animal meat as you forgot to buy a cargo life support system... trading narcotics with Feudal systems and then buying... oh what was it... computer goods or summat for the way back.

LOVED IT!

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

The best thing about the docking computer on the BBC, was when it would crash you into the side of spaceport.

I remember a couple of times I would start it up, go to make a cup of tea or somethign and come back to my spaceship floating around in little pieces.......

I actually found this while looking around :

http://217.160.88.86/Fanseiten/Elite...ish/index.html

Could be pretty cool for PC owners.

Cheers

I had the C64 version - a mate had the BBC version - don't know if it was just coincidence but i used to get the Thargoids much more often on the C64 than he did on the BBC. I can still remember the feeling of disorientation when you came out of hyperspace and couldn't find the planet/sun/spacestation - took a couple of seconds before all hell broke loose and you checked to see if you had bought an escape pod at your last port of call. I think in all the times i came across the Thargoids (probably a dozen or so) i only actually managed to fight them off once! Every other time was either death or escape pod!

I always used to trade in the banned stuff and rarely visited systems that weren't either feudal or anarchy. I remeber one route i had that i could make a decent profit on narcotics one way and slaves/furs the other. I hate to think how long i spent travelling back and forth between those two systems and how many time i got blown up before i could afford decent lasers and E.C.M

I know it sounds like heresy, but I always preferred Frontier over Elite. Elites roll and pitch control system was a constant annoyance for me, when Frontier adopted a more easy control method, I was hooked. I made a killing trading illegal luxury goods at Van Maanens Star, got me a Panther Clipper in no time then traded it in for an Asp Explorer a few days later...Ah, those were the days

Re: Elite IV: Preview Thread

I used to like the little details - like the fact there was a Cobra Mk I and a Cobra Mk III but the Mk II was abandoned due to a design fault in the hull.

And the missles in the original Elite never self-exploded after a while. If it was far away you could hyperspace near the station and then try and dock before it caught you up. And the map was just FULL of places to visit if you wanted. Trying to plot a way to the furthest reaches of the universe, hoping there was a planet/docking station there if it was populated enough...

Bloody hell. Can you download this (legally) for the PC? I fancy playing it now...

Yep, there is a OpenGL version called Oolite, which has updated graphics and a few more ships added.

Oh yeah, I forgot I used to do that. Steam in at full speed then switch on my computer at the last moment. Used to scrape in through the doors quite a lot.

I used to pick up gems as they were really light weight. The only thing I found was the first time I tried it I had shed loads as I had been collecting them for weeks. I docked at a station where the price was sky high, went to sell them all and got skammed and only got a few credits. You had to sell them in small amounts to get your money. Doh!

R.e. The Thargoids on the C64. There was a way to hyperspace into their galaxy pretty much every time but I've forgotten it. Once there you had to locate the mothership and destroy it to de-activate the little ships. Pretty tricky tbh

I quite liked using the mining laser as it was v powerful. Only thing was you had to make sure you were on target as it took ages to recharge.

I can still picture trying to line up my sights with the one white pixel on my tv which was the ememy fleet far away, letting rip and getting that satisfying sound of a clean hit.

Nostalgiatastic!

I never played Elite (a bit young I think, 25 now though), but my Step dad played it a lot and get me into Frontier. I spent a lot of time playing that. I have my reservations about this game but if they manage to pull i off and make a fantastic game I may need to put my life on hold for a while
