Brutal Legend

Anyone else read about this game in last months PSM3?

Designed by Tim Schafer of Psychonauts fame.

Sounds hellava like 'Spellsinger' the Alan Dean Foster novel.

Does anyone know if you will be able to use a wireless guitar as control for this game?

Brutal Legend - Preview Thread

Bit confused, did a search but nothing came up - is there really no Brutal legend thread up and running? Anyway...

Activision looking out for gamers once again! has today filed suit against EA in an effort to halt the release of Brutal Legend on all systems. *sigh*

Kotaku - Activision Sues BrĂ¼tal Legend Devs To Halt Release - Activision

Especially sore point for myself, A huge Tim Schafer fan and I thought Brutal Legend was game of show at E3

Does this mean I have to start calling Rocktober October again?

Re: Brutal Legend - Preview Thread

Not sure how you did a search but there was already a thread all be it with only two posts. That's probably because there was a lot of info on the game with it's publishing rights and release in limbo for so long.

The whole thing was was sorted with activision a few weeks ago, I think Tim Schafers Double Fine Productions counter-sued activision and the whole thing was dropped.

Judging by the activity on this thread Tim Schafer won't have the mega selling hit he so deserves another cult classic in the making.

This seems as good a time as any to bad mouth activision, your the unoriginal Nazi's of the video game world (too strong?)

Come on Rocktober!

I think everyone should boycott the COD games and show them we won't put up with their bullying.

viva la revolution Moogle, viva la revolution! I fear that this is merely activision testing the waters at all games at this RRP and it will become the norm for them, then EA, Ubisoft will start asking themselves why they arnt charges these higher prices and before we know it were screwed!

On a Brutal Legend note I notice that this is out the same day as Uncharted 2 Video games are like buses! Likely Brutal Legend will be relegated to xmas barring any bargain prices.

Re: Brutal Legend - Preview Thread

Downloaded the demo after years of waiting, the smile on my face says it all.

Day of the Tentacle and Psychonauts are two of my favourite games ever, and I am partial to a bit of the old metal. So I wasn't surprised that I loved this so much. Already preordered with priority shipping

Just played the demo, excellent 15 mins of pure fun.

I'll be getting this on Rocktober the 16th, sorry Uncharted 2 but you are going to be relegated to Xmas, not enough time for you both I'm afraid

Must admit that I had a big grin on my face all the way playing through the demo. I like the option of playing it without the gore and swearing (not that I did , but it was done in a clever way)

I also enjoyed the demo and will be getting this after Christmas when the price drops a bit. Must admit I didn't fancy it until I tried the demo but it looks great

It was good being able to play it with the swearing and gore on and then switch them off so that my 7 year old nephew (who's a huge Jack Black fan) could also have a go

Re: Brutal Legend - Preview Thread

Still can't believe this thread is so quiet.

Didn't many people on AVF play Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango and Full Throttle? They were some of the best games from the '90's and Brutal Legend should be higher on peoples wish list than it seems I reckon.

Grim Fandango & Psychonauts are 2 of my favourite games narrative wise. In fact when ever I get a new computer one of the first things I do is check Grim works on it OK

Enjoyed the demo, some great humour - but some of the audio seems really very low quality - anyone else notice this?

Yeah, it sounds like the latest Monkey Island stuff from Telltale does - very "SSSScratchy" compression. Hopefully not a problem on the final version.

Yeah I thought exactly the same, the main characters sound really good but all the sound effect are a bit cringe worthy. Maybe they were going for a B movie kind of feel

I like the sound of this, but at 1.6GB, it's too big for me to download just to have a look at. I'm already on my limit with my ISP

I will wait until its in the bargain bin, but will definately get this at some point.

Demo is very good but I think you're right, this game will be in the bargain bins far too soon as it's not really the sort of game that will appeal to the masses.

Poor misguided fools.

How mental does the Multiplayer look on this!

Viddler.com - Brutal Legend (Demo) - Uploaded by Joystiq

The colour schemes & graphics remind me of Citizen Kabuto, remember that? Loved that game.

Re: Brutal Legend - Preview Thread

Borrowed from fidgit.com

Quote:
Five things you should know about Brutal Legend before you get it.

1) You do not have to be into metal

I can't stress this enough. The song list doesn't do anything for me. The soundtrack of my teenage angst was punk instead of metal, but that didn't detract at all from my enjoyment of Brutal Legend. It's full of nods, winks, and thrown horns at metal culture, but at its heart, it's about the love of a type of music. If you've ever loved a specific type of music, you'll appreciate what Brutal Legend is doing. As for the specific tracks, if you grew to hate DragonForce's "Through the Fire and Flames" because of Guitar Hero, prepare to have it redeemed. Also, get ready for a powerful visual association for Ozzy Osbourne's "Mr. Crowley". It's used in Brutal Legend for one of this year's most memorable gaming moments.

2) Don't be dissuaded if you think Jack Black is annoying

Because - let's face it - he is. I think the needle for my tank of Jack Black tolerance approached the "E" somewhere around King Kong. It bottomed out at his detailed promises of fellatio in Tropic Thunder. I can barely bear to hear Tenacious D anymore. But this is not that Jack Black. This is the Jack Black you remember wanting to see more of in High Fidelity. He's clearly invested in the material and it's sharp, funny, and even touching stuff.

3) You will get stuck a few times

Brace yourself. There are maybe three or four really frustrating points in the game. But don't be discouraged. You'll be able to back off and do something else for a while. Buy more upgrades. Sleep on it. Look up the solution online. It's worth it to come out the other side.

4) You'll want to take your time

Brutal Legend can be a short game, but it doesn't have to be. You'll want to take your time with it. Feel free to explore. Do some of the side missions and don't make the mistake of thinking they're just a way to get extra money (be sure to look for the Overslaughter hunter in the hills near where you start). Give yourself the freedom and time to appreciate the smaller touches. It'll pay off. Plus, you're just going to be sad when Brutal Legend is over. Delay that moment as long as you can.

5) You shouldn't play multiplayer until you've finished the single player game

A tooltip on one of the loading screens suggests you play the multiplayer once you've gotten a taste for how the stage battles work. Don't listen to this tooltip! Like many real time strategy games, Brutal Legend consists of different factions with different units. Also like many real time strategy games, Brutal Legend uses the single player game to introduce the new units in the context of a story. But unlike many real time strategy games, Brutal Legend has a great story, some of which will be spoiled if you jump immediately into a full game with all the units from all the factions.

Re: Brutal Legend - Preview Thread

Nice concept and entertaining cut-scenes. The vehicle section mixed up the action, and the hack-n-slash element seemed to handle well.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's the type of game that I would necessarily want to keep after completing, and because I don't rent games, it's probably something that I'll end up picking up from the bargain bins. I suspect that a lot of people will probably do the same, especially when taking into consideration the time of year, which is a real shame because Tim Schafer is a genius.
