Cant play gta at 1080p

Hi,

My tv is capable of 1080p and in the ps3 settings it says it can do 576, 720p, 1080i,1080p. Yet when i load up gta it says that it is running at 720p.

what can i do to make it playable at 1080p?

thanks

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

i know this sounds stupid, and you've probably tried this with other games, but this does work with GTA4.

goto display options on XMB, and deselect 720p and 1080i, for some reason this works, however since the last FW update all my games have started playing in 1080p.

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

GTa4 is not a 1080p game it was made in 720p and that's the native, you can upscale it to 1080 by unticking 720p in the PS3 output options if wish but dont expect it to look as good as a true 1080 game.

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

wow that was a helpful post! and completely on topic!

anyway,

to get GTA IV to display in 1080p go to display settings > HDMI > Custom Settings and untick everything except 1080p.

i myself, and many others have noticed the game runs alot smoother with this setup, i cant play the game in 720, its instantly noticeable (nothing to do with graphic, seems to run smoother perhaps more FPS, im not sure)

The best answer of course is having a play around yourself! see what suits your setup best and stick with that, have fun with it

Yes, but it's not true 1080p it just upscaled from 640p = rubbish.

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

I think the option for 1080p is for those that don't have a TV capable of 720p but do of 1080i, so the game can still run in HD and not default to 480p.

Its not alone, COD4 is the same, PGR3, Halo 3 and Haze amongst others. Personally whilst I have a 1080p TV I'm more interested in gaming experience and enjoyment rather than pixel counting.

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

Most games don't actually run in 1080p, infact only a few do.

720p is still "HD"

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

If you untick the 720p option all you are doing is forcing the PS3 to do the upscale from 720p to 1080p instead of your TV, whether this has any placebo like effect on you varies from person to person

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

I'd say it's far from being the placebo effect.

Since getting the game and playing it on a 2008 Samsung 50inch Plasma and my current 9G Pioneer I find a big difference in playing the game in 720p and upscaled to 1080p.

It just looks nicer and more expansive in 1080p. I think it must have something to do with outputting at my set's native resolution. I am convinced the game is doing a really good job at upscaling which has a big effect for me. It's like when upscaling DVD's using a decent s/w DVD player (like PowerDVD). The quality is incredible - alot better than if just outputting an SD and letting the TV upscale.

I've tried playing GTA in 720p but it just doesn't feel anywhere near as good as it does when output at 1080p. The quality is fantastic on my set.. Especially night scenes.

Re: Cant play gta at 1080p

By de-selecting 720p & 1080i - you are forcing some games (like GTA & COD4) to play at 1080p however by doing it this way - some games resolution can be forced downwards - like Little Big Planet and FIFA 08 the resolution is 576p along with most demos dowloaded from PS network

All it's doing is stretching the image from 1280x720 to 1920x1080, this is the most basic "upscaling" possible. Your TV wil automatically do this (otherwise you would have a picture surrounded by black bars) and will probably do more to the image than just stretching it, this may make it look worse if you TV cannot do a good job of it/isn't configured great for this purpose.

Except that this generally involes some upscaling algorithms designed to improve the image.

Of course it looks better upscaled than it does in SD but i think we're comparing 1080p upscaled to the game default 720p.
