I'm not sure the patch is for the online side of things. I might be wrong but I think it's being misinterpreted. Below is what was said on PSU.com:

http://www.psu.com/%5BUPDATED%5D-Roc...0003576-p0.php UPDATE: As promised, the desperately needed v1.01 patch has been released to the public.
"Rockstar Games has released a GTA IV patch for Playstation 3 today that prevents Gamespy's servers from being overloaded and therefore reduces the impact on those servers that were causing the game to stutter and lock up," the studio commented. "This update will ensure that everyone will experience Grand Theft Auto IV the way it was intended. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused."
ORIGINAL STORY: Sony and Rockstar Games have confirmed that a patch for the PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV will be made available at some point later today.
According to Eurogamer, the patch is aimed at improving the online component of the popular crime epic by "reducing the loads on the servers at GameSpy and hopefully the completely random hangs that some users have seen."
The PS3 version has been plagued with multiple issues since launch day, including reports of users having trouble connecting to the multiplayer server to various instances of the game freezing up.
Stay tuned.

The game connects to the Gamespy servers as soon as you start it up (in single player) and that's why we're having freezes (well we don't know why but it's the cause of the problem somehow). So I think the patch was to sort out the server problem to stop the freezes, not necessarily the online side of the game and most probably just the single player side.

I'm probably wrong, but has anyone from Rockstar actually said it's for the multiplayer side of the game or as I've read it; to reduce the load on the servers which are crashing the game – as the game speaks to the server as soon as it starts up.
What do you guys think because my online side of the game was just as poor as it's ever been, after the patch last night, but the single player did seem more stable and it didn't freeze last night.
