GTA IV in 720p

I noticed Killzone 2 running in 720p, which is fair enough because it says on the box that its 720p, but GTA IV says 720p 1080i 1080p on the box and is also running in 720p.
I found another thread on this forum and somebody said they have to manually set their PS3 to 1080i and change it back for games that dont support it.
Am I right in thinking that the 'Automatic' setting isn't automatically running in the highest resolution? or did I miss something?

(edit) I still can't get GTA IV to run in 1080i

Re: GTA IV in 720p

I think you need to deselect all the resolutions apart from what you need ie 1080i or p and it will force the PS3 to upscale the game to that res. GTAIV is something like 640p native anyway so may not look as good upscaled to 1080 compared with 720... Have a try

Re: GTA IV in 720p

The option to manually select the best option for each game is a great feature as visual quality is heavily dependant on what tv you're using.

As mentioned GTA4 runs native well below 720p so is upscaled anyway.

1080i is usually the worst option out of everything, try selecting 720p and 1080p manually in the ps3 options to see what works best for you.

Also don't ever go on what is flashing up on your tv screen, it just shows the resolution that the signal is being upscaled to, it's not an indication of native resolution.

Re: GTA IV in 720p

OK so where it says on the box 720p 1080i 1080p, what does this mean exactly, if the game is not running in any of these resolutions?

Re: GTA IV in 720p

These values are the supported output resolutions, all of which for GTAIV are upscaled by the PS3 from the original game which runs at (something like) 640p.

Techincally you should go with the option that matches the pixel line count on your display as choosing 720p output to a 1080p display will require further scaling at the display side - and the same for 1080i on a 720p display. Experiment though, as how it looks to you is much more important than any of this.

They are the resolutions that the PS3 can output the game in.
When people talk about the native resolution of a game they are talking about the resolution the game renders at, this may not be the same as the resolution that gets output to the TV.

You should leave the PS3 set to all the resolutions that your TV supports and the game/PS3 will choose the best resolution to display that game at. You do not gain anything by forcing the PS3 to upscale to 1080p except the hassle which comes with having to change the options when you put in a game that won't output at 1080p!

Wise words as strangely enough my Plasma looks better set to 1080i rather than 720p on the PS3 even though my display is 720p native.

Re: GTA IV in 720p

i have had this same problem... so a i right in thinking, it is just best to let the ps3 do its business and not try and force it to do anything?

my tv is a panasonic txp42s10b native 1080p..
