PS2 Green tint only in certain circumstances, why? please help!

I recently bought a second hand PS2. I am running it through the "AV MULTI OUT" port on the PS2 and a scart lead on the other end which connects to the LCD TV.

when i run the PS2 with no disc in it, the picture is fine and i can go to the settings (system configuration) page and the imagine is perfect. however, when i put a game or DVD in the PS2, a green tint appears on the screen. i have tried fiddling with the tv settings but to no avail. i plugged the PS2 into another tv (older one) and everything works fine.

I don't know much about this sort of thing so any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the system configuration, my settings are:
Screen size: 4:3
DIGITAL OUTPUT (OPTICAL): On
Component Video Out: RGB - when i switch this to the other option (which is called "Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr") the screen gets the same green tint even on the system configuration screen (which has a no tint when on RGB). to sum up on RGB the system config screen is fine but when a DVD or game is loaded, the green tint comes back.

Has the console been 'modified'?

This is not a defect, this is just how the PS2 works. You cannot use the DVD with the SCART cable. It's as simple (and annoying) as that.
I believe it's a protection issue.
You can get a perfect picture by using component cables. If you don't have component inputs, then I'm afraid you are out of luck.
Component cables are best anyway as they allow progressive scan modes for games that support it. ie. Tekken 4 looks superb.

Not quite right ^ it is using RGB SCART connections that result in the green tint. If you use a CV only SCART cable or a non-RGB SCART socket you won't get the green tint. Some, so called, Ultimate PS2 SCART cables incorporate a switch to swap between RGB and CV using the same cable.

Datel Region X and most PS2 cheat disc systems also include a facility for circumventing this annoying and pointless designed in problem when using the PS2 as a DVD player.
