PS2 - Selling for £279 (shock)

This news i found rather shocking

Yesterday, on November 18, 2009, Sony Computer Entertainment made its latest console launch in Brazil: the PlayStation 2.

Priced at R$799 (just over £279), the nine-year-old console is now set to become the hottest gift in South America this Christmas, perhaps competing with the Sinclair C5 and Jurassic Park on VHS.

According to Gizmodo Brazil, there is hope for Brazlian punters hoping to join the rest of the world in the 21st century; Sony apparently sells some older PS3 games in the country (£69 each, thanks) - just not the actual hardware to play them on. Hmm.

At those prices, it's no wonder piracy is quite popular in South America.

Anyone got a PS2 to sell on the Brazilian Ebay

If this is accurate info it is appalling. Are you sure this isn't a mistake and they're actually talking about the PS3?

If true you would have thought anyone into gaming in Brazil would have imported a US NTSC PS2 console years ago. It must still be cheaper to do that than pay for what I assume is this 'localised' version. That is if you can find an exporter willing to send Sony stuff out of region.

What this this seems to be an example of is how Sony's pursuit and punishment of grey suppliers is now allowing them to screw over local markets worldwide. The equivalent of £280 for a last generation console than sells, delivered, in the UK for under £80 - there's something very odd in the economics of that. I'd be interested to hear Sony's excuse for that price point.
BTW isn't the Brazilian TV system a bit weird? I think I remembering reading here that the system is a version of PAL but their TVs can also receive NTSC broadcasts. Have to check that.

A quick google news search confirms this is correct, PS2 in Brazil practically a decade after everyone else.
