Exactly - that's why I asked the question.
I use Swap Magic with older fat PS2s so I don't know the ins and outs of installing the parts in a slim PS2 to allow you to swap the disc. But I do know what can happen with a PS/PSone and using something like PS-XChange. The technique is very similar but if there's a fault with the
method you've used to hold the lid catch switch closed you can get either the boot disc or, more usually the game spinning without loading.
I think it unlikely to be this type of problem with the PSTwo here but I just suggest it as a possibility. If he can eliminate all the other possibilities for the trouble whatever he's left with will be the answer.
What I'm interested in from the sound of it the Swap Magic disc spins but the PSTwo isn't even trying to read it. If it was you would expect a DRE message or load a valid PS2 game message.
Yet Swap Magic CD version works perfectly and so does the DVD version but only if started when loaded before power on. This surely means there's nothing wrong with the DVD disc either.
Could it be a laser carriage problem ie. it doesn't go to the correct start point to read this particular disc? But by powering on with the disc in place the PS2 is reading it right from the off and so goes to the correct read start point.
Just pure guesswork because I just don't know how the PSTwo reads such discs and if or why there should be any difference with the way it reads CD and DVD based media either.
I certainly think the OP should test the SM DVD on another PS2/Two, preferably a matching model version, as a priority.
