Exclamation Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

I've just received my Swap Magic today, installed everything correctly and got part of it working.

When I put in the Swap Magic v3.8 CD (USA) everything works fine, but when I put in the Swap Magic v3.6 DVD (USA) that's where I start to have problems. It seems that the Swap Magic DVD spins but does nothing. Once I hit the Reset button my PS2 boots and goes to the PS2 Browser where I see my memory card and disk, if I click on that disk it tries to load and returns to the browser.

Any help would be highly appreciated. (I don't think it's my laser as I can play original DVD games.)

My PS2 Slim
Console: SCPH-70012
Browser: 1.40
CD Player: 2.00
Playstation Driver: 1.11
DVD Player: 3.10U

If you need any more information just ask.

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

Are you able to try a 3.8 DVD?

It could still be a laser problem, it would not be uncommon - it won't take you more then an hour to open it up and clean the laser and give it a good dusting!

Easiest way would be to try the disc on a friends PS2 ( or two! ) to verify if it is the disc or a laser problem.

And when you put the disc in and nothing happens, does it make a sort of buzzing sound?

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

Sadly, I only received a v3.6 DVD along with a v3.8 CD. I find that awkward.

Did you get it from somewhere reputable? as you should of got either 3.6 & 3.6 CD/DVD or 3.8 & 3.8 CD/DVD

I don't think it would matter as 3.8 is only the coder version which contains ARMAX cheats ( which was a con as its all manual! ) But people have had problems with 3.8.

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

Well can I ask you this. Is there an exploit I can load on to my PS2 with the Swap Magic CD system which could then enable me to load DVD games?

Also I do have GameShark 2 but it alone is no use for modding the PS2 Slim.

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

Ok, I got the Swap Magic to sort of work. If unplugg the system for about 5 minutes and power it on it will work ONCE. If I simply hit the reset button it does not work.

I did get this PS2 used from GameStop and can return it but is it the disk or the system?

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

I would say it is a Disc issue.
Send it back and ask for a replacement, if nothing else works..
If the 2nd doesn't, must be a laser issue..

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

Just out of curiosity, do the v3.6 disc's usually act faulty?

Also, is there no exploit I can load on to my Memory Card with the Swap Magic CD?

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

Is it possible I need to plug my PS2 in to the internet to get an update or something?

There is, but it's quite a hassle and a pain to use there is no reason swapmagic shouldnt work - just need to find out if it is a dodgy disc or PS2!

Is it not possible you can try a friends or someone? that way you will know if it is the DVD or your PS2, If you can return it easily then go for it, but i'd say make sure it is a different model number.

Never heard or had any problems with my 3.6s, have played various NTSC imports with no problems I hear more problems with 3.8s to be honest, but i don't know - all 3.8 adds is cheats.

PS2 never had firmware updates, and even if it did sony wouldnt support swapmagic as it is not official & it wouldnt fix anything anyway if it was the disc or PS2 itself.

Just curious but how many other DVDs have you tried? have you had any slowness in games or had to re-boot discs.

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

If your PS2 loads and runs games, particularly those notorious DV9 dual layer titles, without the same fault then it is unlikely to be a laser problem. It wouldn't do any harm to clean it by an approved DVD player laser lens cleaner though.

It would have seemed to be either the Swap Magic DVD disc is faulty or there's some new software/firmware incompatibilty. Sony sure aren't going to help you (the changes they make to the PS2's firmware between versions is probably largely to foil use of such systems). So if it was this there's nothing you can do about it until (or if) a new Swap Magic version is released. But now you tell us it does works, if only intermitently, suggesting to me that the problem IS with the PS2 itself or the lid mod method you've used.

When starting the SM DVD disc do you shut the lid whilst it is loading?

Re: Help with PS2 Slim and Swap Magic!

You shouldn't need to close the lid, if the by passing process has been installed correclt, the lid will have nothing to do with it, I have mine playing with lid open, IF the lid is a faliure, then the by pass hard ware has been installed incorrectly..

Exactly - that's why I asked the question.

I use Swap Magic with older fat PS2s so I don't know the ins and outs of installing the parts in a slim PS2 to allow you to swap the disc. But I do know what can happen with a PS/PSone and using something like PS-XChange. The technique is very similar but if there's a fault with the
method you've used to hold the lid catch switch closed you can get either the boot disc or, more usually the game spinning without loading.

I think it unlikely to be this type of problem with the PSTwo here but I just suggest it as a possibility. If he can eliminate all the other possibilities for the trouble whatever he's left with will be the answer.

What I'm interested in from the sound of it the Swap Magic disc spins but the PSTwo isn't even trying to read it. If it was you would expect a DRE message or load a valid PS2 game message.

Yet Swap Magic CD version works perfectly and so does the DVD version but only if started when loaded before power on. This surely means there's nothing wrong with the DVD disc either.

Could it be a laser carriage problem ie. it doesn't go to the correct start point to read this particular disc? But by powering on with the disc in place the PS2 is reading it right from the off and so goes to the correct read start point.

Just pure guesswork because I just don't know how the PSTwo reads such discs and if or why there should be any difference with the way it reads CD and DVD based media either.

I certainly think the OP should test the SM DVD on another PS2/Two, preferably a matching model version, as a priority.
