RPG fan needs list of the best PS2 RPGs

As title, could anyone help? I'm a huge RPG fan but in need of some recommendations for PS2.

Obviously the place to start would be the Final Fantasy games X or XII, but i'd recommend anyone to at least try the Shin Megami Tensei series. I keep meaning to pick up Persona3 but somehow i just don't think i'll have the time for it.

One thing to watch out for though is the high amount of random battles in that series - it can become a grind at times.

Also look out for the Grandia and Wild Arms series as both are excellent. If you're looking for something with an edge i really can't recommend the Shin Megami Tensei series enough but if you prefer something a little more light and whimsical Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 are both wonderful games.

I don't like the look of the new FF games (I prefer the oldschool). However I was a big fan of Suikoden 1 and 2 on PS1 so I'll be checking out 3-5. I don't mind random battles, I must prefer this type to the games where you can actually avoid battles if you wish (I understand you can in FF12?) as I think that takes the fun out of levelling up and stuff, actually being able to run round the critters!

Grandia yes I tried the PS1 version, haven't played far thru it tho are the PS2 titles much of an improvement? Again, Wild Arms I've only played a little on the PS1 but I did like what I saw.

Never heard of Shin Megami Tensei series so I'll definitely give those a check, thanks!

If your looking for a traditional rpg then Dragon Quest VIII is worth a look and you would probably enjoy Final Fantasy X as it's still old school just with better graphics.

However i would highly recommend Final Fantasy XII. I'm a big fan of turn based rpg's but FF XII does have a very enjoyable battle system which for me eliminates the grind that many turn based rpg's can suffer from.

I'm trying some of the rarer ones at the moment. Something called Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana. First of a 3-part PS2 series, and it seems real old-school with jazzed up graphics so I would recommend that

Definately check out Persona 4, probably one of the best RPG's to come out on the PS2 if not all recent consoles.

Only the US and JP versions are out so far though.

I will check Person 3 FES before I check 4, I found the premise very intriguing!

I played through Suikoden 3 a while back and GOD that game was amazing I absolutely loved it! I then procedeed to skip 4 as it has bad reviews, then started 5 and although took a bit to get into loved that too, but 3 was definitely my favourite by far.

I'm trying to get into FFX at the moment but having trouble, it all seems weird to me especially the levelling up system. But will perservere!

Persona 3/4 are very good, the missus has sunk Christ knows how many hours into the pair. I've played P3 a bit but not far into it. I've also got Kingdom Hearts and FFX in their way to have a dabble with, so shall report back.

I am shocked nobody has mentioned the Shadow Hearts, series they are awesome turn based rpg games with that added element of horror, if you have ever played Koudelka on the ps1that game is the prequel of SH.

Well worth the play, especially the first one, if you are into horror games too.

TBH I don't own many rpg's on the ps2, the only other ones I would suggest that has already been suggested is the Wild Arms series.

Couldn't get into FFX so started playing Persona 3 FES and may say I'm very impressed! Good 20 hours into it now, definitely recommend this title and the whole using your Persona and kit it out type thing makes it seem like a sort of darker version of Pokemon! Will be doing 4 straight after this.

Persona 4 is more of the same, the missus loves them both.

Ooooo... you'd regret saying never to those. I'd like to mention Tales of Symphonia (or any other 'Tales of' game). I can't think of any others that havn't been mentioned.

It is amazing, cannot deny that. But I'm really not sure if I prefer 3 FES or 4! They are both great!

Working my way through Final Fantasy 12 now and it's enjoyable but is it just me or is it bloody hard? I must be 80% of the way through now and I'm trying to do all the clan hunts and damnit how the hell are you supposed to do some of those higher ranked ones without cheating and reading up on strategies?! I must say I'm not using any quickenings however, and I think they're supposed to make the bosses a fair bit easier?

Well on the weekend I was bored and thought I'd give Arc The Lad: Twilight of the Spirits a try. I was aware of the previous PS1 installments although had given them a miss (I'm not a major fan of grid based strategy battles). However I'm about 12 hours in now and it's a lot of fun! The battles aren't overly complicated and are quite easy to get into, offering just the right amount of depth. Great storyline which keeps you entertained too, you switch between playing with the different heroes and go through chapters with each kinda like Suikoden 3 and Breath of Fire 4.
