whats a good shooter?

Ok ive just bought a second hand ps2 since my 360 blew up and i need something to pass the time before its returned from warrenty

I had a mooch round in Game at the preowned games but theres just hundreds and its confusing! Too much choice!

Anyway , i could do with a good fps shooter. Any suggestions? Also if theres any decent games to recommend then yell out.

I got Gran Turismo 4 which frankly im dissapointed with.
God of War 2 since that was advertised as the second coming, and its fun i guess.
Dynasty Warriors Extreme Legends, since i think im the only person on the planet who actually loves those Koei games to bits
Got FF12 on order and thats sposed to be good.

But im missing a shooter. And a good pool game too, i had Pool Paradise on the gamecube and it was fantatsic, it just hasnt transferred to the PS2 that well

Re: whats a good shooter?

From my own experience I recommend a great FPS largely overlooked and available for both PS2 and old XBox is Darkwatch. It's has an unusual gothic/vampire western theme and been described as Halo-esque in gameplay terms. A pretty good recommendation. Multi-format Timesplitters 2 or Timesplitters Future Perfect are universal FPSs everybody should have in their collections.

If you want a decent story and more cerebral FPS's on the PS2 Half-Life and the truly extrordinary Deus Ex are obvious choices although, of course, graphically, both far better on PC. I think the two Brothers In Arms games are also available on PS2 - FPS/Team Strategy and arguably the best WW2 shooters on the last generation consoles.

Another overlooked early PS2 FPS is mech game Gungriffon Blaze. Simple design, a crudish look and a very limited range of levels but the controls are excellent and it's a very competent, quite demanding and highly entertaining game whilst it lasts.

Other FPSs to look out for are Red Faction 1 & 2 (I believe the only really successful exclusive PS2 FPSs') and, again, multi-format, Black (as recomended above). The excellent PS2 only Ace Combat flight games might also be of interest as they play very well in FP view too. I think Medal of Honor Frontline should also be mentioned as the best example from that deteriorating series. Much better and miles more fun is the bonkers WW2 themed Return to Castle Wolfenstein. However, both have marginally better XBox versions.

Third person shooters but with significant FP content well worth considering, although both multi-format again, are the minor gem that is Psi-Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy and the similar Second Sight.
