Resident Evil 4

Got RE4 today and it brought home a rather unsettling realisation – I suck.

I'm about 20 minutes in, at the village, and a crazed "European" keeps taking my head off with a chainsaw. I keep running out of ammo because my aim is terrible, so I repeatedly have to resort to fighting with a knife (which, as you can imagine, is no match for a whirling chainsaw blade).

Thoroughly enjoying the game so far, but my performance leaves more than a little to be desired. Perhaps I should have started on Easy rather than Normal...

So, anyone else played this; is it as difficult as it seems to be for me?

Re: Resident Evil 4

Better aim will come with time & practice. The weirdo with the chainsaw, you've got no hope killing him with the pistol. If you're playing on normal difficulty, have you got the shotgun yet? When you arrive in the main village with the church tower, one of the houses before it on the left has the shotgun on a rack upstairs. A blast from this will send most enemies flying, leaving you time to switch back to the pistol and damage them more while they try and get up.

It's one of the best games of the last few years, keep at it and you'll love it. The guy with the chainsaw, if he gets near you, it's instant one hit death. Learn to keep the bugger at bay!

Re: Resident Evil 4

I forgot to mention, a good way of conserving ammo is to shoot the normal villagers in either the face or shin once with the pistol, they'll scream & stagger - which leaves you just enough time to quickly get near them and kick them

Re: Resident Evil 4

As a last resort, you can also clear the village part without having to face chainsaw boy.

Highlight below to read how:
Do no go into any of the houses when you get to the village and chainsaw boy will not appear. To make it easier to fight the 'normal' villagers, move to an area where they can't ambush you from behind, like one of the alleys leading to a gate. And do as Intya said or go for head shots

Good luck

Re: Resident Evil 4

I've switched to easy, having the chainsaw from the start made it much, well, easier.

Finished the first chapter - going to go back and try it again on normal difficulty with my new-found knowledge. The game's great, I hadn't played any of the previous Resident Evils, might pick them up cheap now. Thanks for the advice, I'm sure I'll be back for more.

Can't recommend them highly enough. 2 was always my favourite. It's just a shame that one of the shambling foes isn't your man Zombie Dave himself...

Re: Resident Evil 4

We can always pretend.

Just got into the castle in RE4. There was me seeing the map was running out and fearing I was nearly the end of the game, only to find out it was only just beginning.

I fear I'm developing a minor addiction to it now. It's even preventing me starting Okami, which I was really looking forward to playing.

Re: Resident Evil 4

Okay, it's happened. I've just rescued Ashley from her prison cell, and haven't got enough ammo to reach the next save point. I've been fearing this would happen for some time now.

This is the sort of thing that really puts me off a game. I played Final Fantasy VIII for countless hours before getting to a boss I simply couldn't beat because my levels weren't high enough. As with that, in RE4 I can't go back, and I'm not going to play through 13 hours of the game again to get to where I am but with more ammo.

I've enjoyed what I've played so far, but I'm so irritated by a game when this happens that I'm unlikely to return to it, and that's probably the fate RE4 now has.

It's a shame, but with Psychonauts, Okami and Shadow of the Colossus yet to be properly explored, I think I'll live. Why do developers do this? I know it's ultimately my fault, but it's not something I could have foreseen. Words cannot express how irritated I am with Capcom at the moment.

doh, isnt there any ammo cheats you can use?

I remember having to leave ammo behind in RE4 because I had so much of the stuff!

remember to pop them in the legs, run over to them and finish them off with a kick.

Re: Resident Evil 4

I managed to get past that point and managed to complete the game. On my third round now (still on Easy though, ha) and nearly have enough cash to buy the infinite launcher.

I was really impressed at the unlockable games, particularly Seperate Ways, which I'm (very) slowly playing my way through. Resident Evil 4 continues to keep Okami and Shadow of the Colossus (both bought well over a month ago) in an unplayed state.

Not playing Shadow of the Colossus is a criminal offence in my book. Get playing, now!
