Final Fantasy XII

Just wanted to see who will be getting FFXII 2moz, there has been no convo on it so I thought I would start one.

I'll probably be buying it on my way home from work tonight (1am) and I can see myself playing it until like 6 in the morn. Hopefully I won't be too for uni 2moz.

Re: Final Fantasy XII

Neither can I. It'll be the first real FF game I will play since FFX. Coz lets admit it FFX-2 was a load of so its been a long awaited game.

One thing I don't understand is why we haven't got it earlier like within a couple of weeks after it came out in america rather than months after.

Re: Final Fantasy XII

I'm getting mine today. Shame us brits dont get the limited edition version . I heard the game was in 16:9, does anyone know whether the game supports progressive scan?
I enjoy playing my final fantasy's and i like the leveling up and the progression through the games, although the battles can be dull. With the new battle system perhaps this might be the best step the series can take to compete with other next-gen games and genres. I just hope the story can grab my attention too.

My copy will hopefully be getting delivered from ChoicesUK today - ready for playing tonight. I also bought the hardback piggyback guide - I don't want to use the guide, but it just looked too good to leave on the shelf

I'm not really bothered about the limited edition version. Unfortunately the game doesn't have progressive scan on it. The game is ******* awesome!!

I Love the new battle system, its a very welcome refreshment on an already good platform

I'm a bit unsure of the new battle system - is it still essentially turn based? I didnt like Star Ocean or Tales of Symphonia as the battle system was too arcadey. I like to have time to think in battle Is there an option to set it to 'Wait' so it is still turn based?

lucky b*****d!!, I tried to get it early from game but they were having none of it. So I was like 'Screw it!!' and just bought it from Tesco just after midnight. Serves them right for being so uptight about release dates

yeah it still is turn-based. I'm exactly like you, i like to think about what i'm doing. It still has the Wait and Active options. so essentially its just the same as X but the have integrated the battle sequence into the surrounding area

Re: Final Fantasy XII

I was unsure about the battle system at first, but then just as I was starting to get used to it, I died because I had about 7 different enemies against my party of 4 - yes I tried to flee but they followed me and I still got owned

Reminded me a bit of WoW to be honest, if you accidentally pull a load of stuffs, then game over for you I've not yet figured out how to make the enemies respawn to grind for exp either...

Re: Final Fantasy XII

I am about 3 hours in and wow! The intro was superb!!!

It is nice to see it a bit more gritty, a nice combination of 7 + 8 almost.

Pretty much the same as MMORPG as far as I can see in mechanics, but slightly more developed for single player.

So far so good for me, feel like it could be the best FF yet!!

Extremely polished game. The game world detail is fantastic and the opening town feels alive. Battle system confuses me with all those arcs shooting off all over the place. I understand it but it puts me off.

If you press triangle to get to your config screen you can go into the game options and turn it off - problem solved!

I'm pleased that it has widescreen support (16:9) really makes a difference

Took a bit to get used to but the battle system is great, no random battels you just choose to fight your enemies or not

Re: Final Fantasy XII

I have fallen overboard for this game! So far managed to put in nearly 18 hours already!!! Lucky for my gf doesn't get back from holiday until Monday After that I will be lucky to play 18 hours in a month!

Seems fairly slow pace so far though, I am only level 15/16 and I feel like I am really only at the beginning of the game still.

I really like the gambit system, if they could have done better I wish it was a little more complex, mind you I only have about 10% of the gambits unlocked

I think the licence system works pretty well, but it seems hard to configure someone to be a straight class, they do have to get a little bit of everything to get to the useful squares (I have unlocked so far).

I managed to string one set of quickenings together, took a bit of practice and it is a little hard/random with only 2 unlocked. But when I linked them together, the end chain f******* awesome! I am really looking forward to dishing out major damage with them!

So far for me ..... 10/10!

Re: Final Fantasy XII

Ive managed about 6 or 7 hours so far and I have to say I love it! The battle system is a little weird at first, but very quickly becomes second nature. The Gambit system works really well too.

I gave up last night after going on my third hunt and getting destroyed by the monster!! Might stick to the storyline for a while rather than trying to go of on my own

Re: Final Fantasy XII

Superb game. They've really invigorated the series with the new battle system. I was initially unsure as i've been a huge fan of the previous series and this seemed to be such a departure but it works! Managed to squeeze in 12 hours over the weekend and i'm hooked.

Graphics are sublime, no prog scan though. Music is excellent and voice acting can be hit and miss. Oh and finally a really interesing story with what seems to be alot of twists (this early in the game).

Damn i was halfway thru okami, looks like that'll be on hold for the next few weeks.

Re: Final Fantasy XII

Yeah it is worth saving quite often as you never know what is around the corner. Those hunt monsters can be a real pain as they might be in a lowbie area, but they will be smacking you around!

The problem I have got at the mo is trying to work out what I want to licence!!! Everything is so useful.

Currently have two teams setup with the following :-

Team 1

Basch - Modelling on a dark knight, currently with 1 Hand Sword and Shield, want to move to 2H Sword.
Fran - Making into a Red Mage, with bow.
Penelo - Making into a predominantly black mage.

Team 2

Vaan - a mage/thief.
Balthier - Making into a Dragoon (not that happy there is no Jump Technick in this game ).
Ashe - Making into a White Mage.

The nice thing I find about this setup is that I can play as a mage with Team 1, as to black mage you need to constantly change your tactics, I don't think you could ever set up the gambits to have that many options.

As Team 2 I get to play Melee as I love smacking things with a spear!

I think I have got way too much into this game!!! Loving it tho, it is like a smoother offline FFXI. My only real grumble, is that I wish the armours would display differently, I want my dark knight to look like a dark knight!

Two teams also means you can swap things around with bosses. It is good I think to spend longer and keep all your chars up to date, as it makes it easier, and I think this game is actually pretty tough for FF. I been killed numerous times and come close a lot!

Re: Final Fantasy XII

I havent got all six characters yet - my favorite so far is Balthier - I'm going to train him up to be more of a swordsman so he can be my lead character I think. I like the licence board as well - similar to FFX's grid but easier to understand i think.

Re: Final Fantasy XII

They are good in the storyline too, Balthier is just the best char, gotta love his evil pirate ways. Some of his lines are great....

eg. Ashe starts going on about something she has to find..... they are at the dungeon mouth. She says this is the blah blah.... Balthier just interrupts and says "Yeah I know, evil monsters, devious traps and all that, nothing too bad then!"

Re: Final Fantasy XII

Balthier is a very cool character, great oneliners. I've decided to stick him with guns for now and keeping him as a support/healer from a distance.

The license board is huge and initially i as just getting everything i could but a more sensible approach is to get licenses when you have the equipment (or the money to buy them) available. Theres no pint spending 50+ LP on a sword license when that sword isnt gonna be available till later in the game. So now i'm just rushing to get all the mist techniques, white magic and stat boosters.

Re: Final Fantasy XII

I would certainly agree that this is a TOP, TOP game. Love it.

Interested to see where everyone is with the Hunts!

I have not been able to do any of the Elite Marks. I'm level 12 but they're beyond me so far. Just (and I mean only JUST) managed to defeat the Nidhogg.

I am also liking the way that this game is not easy. Makes you think. Can't just rush in, sometimes, and kill everything or the monsters may well open up a can or two of whoop ass.

The gambits - can't see a huge use for these beyond healing when HP > 50% etc... but no doubt it's a very clever FF thing that'll only become apparent the more I play the game.

LOVE IT.

Edit : Balthier is simply the best character EVER.

Re: Final Fantasy XII

The gambits start become useful a bit later on, when you only have healing as a main priority it is pretty easy.

However, once you start getting to later levels, the enemies start throwing all kinds of magic at you, you have lots of options to heal/buff and you also need other actions like technicks in there.

Indeed. Managed to beat the Cluckatrice, but that Turtle thing (Rocktoise???) is a bit 'ard. I'm going to go a-wandering in the desert to level up a bit.

Yep - thats the one thats got me stumped. The mines are good for EXP + LP tho (all those skeletons that keep rising) so I might run around there for a while building myself up

I was about level 19 when I took out the rocktoise. I recommend you try to land slow and blind on it, after that it is just a long drawn out fight

Hey, that's my standard plan of attack

No more hints though please! I like to fail and fail again, get frustrated, fail again, and only then realise I'm an idiot and try something different!

I too am now level 19. But nowhere near the mines now. Headed off where the circular platforms are (without giving too much away).

Balthier's character just keeps on getting better and better.

Managed to beat the rocktoise last night - I kept control of my white mage (Vaan) and kept away from the fight. The other three done all the fighting and I just supported and healed them. Job done. Back to the main story now
