How do you save your progress in this game? I was playing it today on the first Episode called "Joe the hero" and I had lost too many of my little life hearts so i decided that i wanted to go back to my last checkpoint but i dont know how to do it? I looked at the manaul and it said to hold L1,L2,R1,R2,Pause & Select buttons all at the same time. I did this and i was taken right back to the main menu where i had to start the game all over again!

You can't save your progress during gameplay, only after you finish each level.

That's how you do a software reset in all PS2 games. It effectively is the equivilant of a soft boot - or restart game.
