DIVX support on PSP

I know there has been some talk about this. Any confirmation yet? Or any homebrew software that plays divx (with subs as a bonus)?

Re: DIVX support on PSP

Don't think so...

I haven't heard of any support in the works, you sure about it being so?

Reason there will most likely be no support is because the PSP fully supports H264 which is the successor technically to DIVX (H263).

You can encode films at 480x272 for the PSP at bitrates lower than 300k with fantastic results, there really is no need for DIVX support.

I can hear you thinking, but what about the stuff you've already got in divx format?

Well, recoding DIVX -> AVC (H264) shouldn't lower the quality much at all Vs ripping direct from a DVD. That is to say there will be a quality drop but hardly more than the quality drop you'd get converting anyway from a source of much higher quality, because of the low resolution being used.

Re: DIVX support on PSP

That might very well be true, but fact is that divx is the most widely used codec for both legal and illegal content, plus it supports subtitles pretty easily with .srt files. If the PSP would support divx/xvid with subtitle support, I think Sony would sell a LOT more PSP's and (even more important to them I think) memory sticks.

I travel quite a bit for work and bought an Archos 604 media player just so I can take my movies with me and play them on a tv in a hotel room. If the PSP would support that (especially now it supports tv-out), I would immediately sell that Archos.

Re: DIVX support on PSP

It would be nice, BUT for the reasons given I don't hold much hope for homebrew development in that area.

There are a couple of programs that make it very simple to plonk an xvid\divx file in and get an mp4 avc file out without any hassle but no direct playback at a satisfactory level (to my knowledge, could be wrong).

Also another problem is the resolution, most tv episodes and the like that are available are a much higher resolution than the PSPs screen.

The PSP will only play files with very specific set of resolutions, 480x272 being its native res.

I dunno really it could be that I just got a quad core intel chip and it converts all me stuff extremely fast into tiny files that a xvid\divx playback function would be useless to me. I can convert an episode of futurama\the simpsons to a file that is only 40mb in size with very good quality when played back on the psp. There's no way on earth xvid\divx could do anywhere near that, more like 150-200mb. Given the limitations of memory stick sizes it the space would soon be eaten up.

You can get most films to between 200-300mb without too much hassle too, you'd need nearer 500-600mb to get similar output from xvid\divx.

Sorry to sound all negative, just trying to give possible reasons for the lack of interest in homebrew developers for this sort of thing. I don't think Sony really takes the PSP seriously in all honesty, if you think what we have actually got in the what, 3 years or so since its release, it doesn't amount to that much.

I mean things like skype are only just coming out for it, and most owners don't really have a use for that sort of thing....

Spot on. Nintendo hates Europe so we should feel lucky that Sony just hates the PSP!

Re: DIVX support on PSP

I think they've been bulking up the PSP support alot recently. The tie in with the PS3, Home is practically an exercise is product placement for the PSP, last year was the best games year for the machine.

Of course, we need this to carry onto into this year, but Square is making a go of it, plus God Of War being a major hitter. Surely that would translate as the best ever handheld game to date?

Re: DIVX support on PSP

Well, if the PSP would support divx with subtitles + some very very good games coming along, there's no doubt this is a very good gaming console.

Re: DIVX support on PSP

Found this little gem on the PSP-Hacks site

This was just brought to my attention… Whether or not you knew about it — PSPTube is capable of DivX video playback!
It’s simple –
1. Download PSPTube 2008/02/28 and install it; if you haven’t already
2. Copy DivX video file(s) to PSP/GAME/PSPTube/favorites; ensure the video file extension ends with .divx
3. Start PSPTube and cycle to favourites by pressing Select

One possible problem, you have to convert them to the PSP size ratio before you can play them
